Black Snake ID

I went out of the house tonight, to lock up the hens in the hen-house. As I stepped off the deck, toads scattered, and a very thick-bodied Black Snake moved away. It moved in a strong, regular "S' then reverse "S" with head held low, not sprinting or nervous like a Black Racer.

My Mastiff gal Libby had followed me out and was strolling behind the snake, watching with mild interest. The Jack Russell Terrier came around the corner of the house, and I picked her up to keep her from seeing the snake. She kills them, all kinds..

What Florida Black Snake in dry wooded areas has a thick body for its length? It was not a Black Racer in looks or movement. I haven't ever seen an Indigo snake here, in 20 years.

The body type looked like a rattler or cottonmouth, but it was neither. I estimate it was maybe 18" long?

I locked up the dogs and tried to find it to look closer, but it escaped.

Ideas?

I like snakes. I'm not afraid of them. But as a Florida Native, this one has me puzzled as to ID..
