There are snake away products and snake fencing you can use. Lots of moth balls in the garage and places you don't want them.

there are various products you can just google snake away for more options.
And the plastic owls or the owl eye things do help if they are put in the right places.

I see one called Liquid Fence Snake Repellent. It does not contain napthalene (a suspected carcinogen). Hopefully safe around my dog.

Do you know what kind of snakes they are? That Snake-Away stuff and moth balls and garden sulphur are said to be effective at repelling some kinds of snakes, but not others like the black rat snake, for example.

And if anybody knows what would repel black rat snakes, I'd love to hear about it--they are terrible about getting into my nestboxes and eating my baby birds!

I think they're garter snakes.

99% of the snakes you would see in your location are perfectly harmess and considered beneficial. They keep the rodent population down.

Please don't ever use moth balls outside....they are very toxic to touch, to inhale the fumes, and very toxic for your pets. That they repel snakes is a myth.

If you have snakes, you have a bigger problem.

Snakes go where their food is. Get rid of the food and they move on!

If our case, it is chipmunks and field mice. I don't know what your snakes are and what they are eating...

Did you say Garter snakes? What a perfect little fella to help you overcome your phobia! I used to catch garter snakes and play with them in my childhood sandbox.

I played with grass snakes and garter snakes when I was a kid, too!

Try to identify your snakes. You might want to keep them around.

First identify the type and make sure there are no poisonous ones. Not sure where you live or what is in the area. You can check with your local animal control person or county agent. I agree, you might have a rodent problem you are not aware or. When we lived in the mountains and had both a wood shed and stack, in the wood shed, I put pallets down first, the the wood. Because I could shut the door, then kept decon in the shed, dropping them under the stacks, and around that way I tried to eliminate the mice--and hopefully the snake, but we had rattlesnakes also. Our wood pile was away from the house and I kept the area clean around so I could see any tracks. Also did put decon where the animals could not get it. Hope this helps

Jasdip, it WAS funny. I would construct mazes, caves, and tunnels in the sand box and then catch toads or a garter snake to set loose. I'd also put in worms and crickets just in case they got hungry. Dad ALWAYS corralled everything in the afternoon and let the poor things go. It didn't take much to keep me occupied, lol.

We've had a problem with crickets for many years, but the snakes only showed up in the last couple of months. Have not seen any mice or chipmunks around; just rabbits.

It happened after my husband bought a bunch of mulch for our garden. Don't know if there's a connection.

In any event, over the weekend we're going to clean out any overgrowth and possibly apply the Liquid Fence Snake Repellent behind the garage.

found this site you might want to check...at least you can id what type...if any aren't on the list, or you feel they're "different" then i'd call the city...i'm sure there has to be a snake fancier who wasn't able to evac their "pets", and now the snakes are fending for themselves? the major problem if your wooded areas have been denuded of natural "homes" they probably are seeking shelter wherever they can find it...

Snakes like several kinds of rodents, which may help clear such unwelcome intruders out of your yard/neighbourhood.

One of our dogs was bitten by a copperhead last week- I'll trade you for garter snakes!

Quigley is fine but it took some Benadryl and 2-3 days for her leg to get back to normal. We're pretty sure she didn't get a full dose of venom, either. She only swelled up to about twice the normal size instead of 3-4 times.

I hate poisonous snakes!

We're going to do a cleanup this weekend, but leaving the dog in the house while we do it.

He's an 80 pound German Shepherd, and I'm sure he can hold his own but we're not taking any chances.

I'm on Long Island too and over 30 years I've seen maybe 2 garter snakes. They're small (under 6 inches) and black with a white stripe. I was horrified when I found the first one. It was in a pile of grass cuttings hubby had piled in a corner of our yard, apparently attracted by the heat and cover it provided. I called the Suffolk County Extension Office and they assured me garter snakes are harmless and definitely afraid of people and dogs. So please don't worry.They may be a nuisance,that's all.

Garter snakes don't stay the same size as they grow nor the same color. As they age, they shed their skin, allowing for plenty of growth. 6 inches would be the size of a new-born, literally.
