Duranta, Orange Jasmine, and Night-blooming Jasmine
Comments (4)Thanks, guys! That's encouraging. Ricky, the orange jasmine I have is the Lakeview. It's awful looking, both the shrub one and the standard I had in a pot. Not a living leaf on it, but I'm hanging in there, hoping it will pull through. I love the scent of those blooms. Mike, my gold mound durantas got hit last year, too, and were black, but came back without pruning. Funny, this year, the plants are completely black, except for the tips, which already have bright green leaves coming out. So I'm thinking they'll be okay, if we don't get hit again. Mary, I had temps around 25 & 26 degrees for five of the eight nights that we had hard freezes. And the temps stayed in the mid-20's for HOURS. I hope you didn't have much worse than that. I'm very happy to hear that your night-blooming jasmine came back strong. Did you have to cut it back? I'm dreading that. Mine was 5' x 3', and I hate having to start over. But I guess it grows fast, because it went from a small cutting to that size in one year. No, I won't be pruning until after March 1, but I'm trying to get a sense of what might pull through and what won't. Thanks again for the input! Marcia...See MoreNight Blooming Jasmine
Comments (40)I am in your vicinity and my night jasmine bushes bloom when it is a little warmer than 75 degrees. It blooms and puts out its fragrance at night. Night jasmine was used very much in the Vieux Carre' in New Orleans in the 18th and 19th centuries to mask the smells of the horses and domestic animals (not to mention the outhouses). Some people do not like its sweet smell but I love it. I plant it where the breeze from the south blows the fragrance towards the house. And, if you pick a branch for the indoors, it will begin to smell at dusk also and REALLY give your house a good fragrance. It makes white berries in the fall and you can use them in Christmas wreaths and arrangements. I used the blooming branches in church once for a nighttime wedding and the whole church smelled very "weddingly." Coleen...See MoreYellow Jasmine vine won't bloom (photo)
Comments (5)Many plants won't bloom their first year after planting - if that vine looks huge to you now, you may be underestimating its potential size, that isn't huge for Gelsemium sempervirens. If you are fertilizing, consider a low-nitrogen fertilizer for best flowering - water as needed to keep the soil barely moist all through spring. Lime won't help the plant to flower, this vine should be fine in acidic to neutral soil and isn't dependent on alkaline ph....See MoreHelp in making my "Night-flowering Jasmine" tree to start blooming
