I think I killed my first hibiscus's...HELP!

Ok, first, totally new gardener here. I received 2 Cairo Pink plants in a swap. Both were rooted and about 8" tall. I 'thought' I had the perfect spot in my front yard where I had just tilled and added compost. This area gets about 6-7 hours of sun per day. Well I planted them, and watered deeply on Tuesday night. Yesterday I get home from work and all of the leaves were wilted and crispy. The branches are still green and firm though. I almost cried. OK, so obviously the heat here was too much becuase they were bone dry when I got home. Should I just keep watering them (more obviously), or should I move them to a container with more shade until they are more accustomed?

Please help!

Hi seraki,Welcome to Garden Web.
Hibiscus Moscheutos 'Cairo Pink'as a Hardy Hibiscus is rather easy to grow.Since the branches are green and firm,the plants can be recovered.The best thing you can do is to plant them in to the ground,providing a little morning sun and dappled shade to the rest of a day.Keep watering.Be sure the drainage is good.If you have not such spot around the house then put them to containers with a tropical or potting soil mix.Give a light,but not afternoon sun.Do not give any fertilizer until they show groving.I wish your Hibiscuses will do well fast.

Thanks a bunch Hala. I'm going to move it closer to the house tonight, so it will only get morning sun. I'll make sure I give it much more water. I know the drainage in this bed is good, the soil was just tilled the day before I planted it.

I have some rooting horomone. Should I put a little of that on the roots to 'help' it along?

You have a Phalaenopsis. You haven't killed it. Given good care it will grow another flowering spike. There is a mountain of information on this site. It's possible that an excess amount of fertilizer/wrong type of fertilizer did damage the root system. In any case, mid-July is too late for fertilizing. A late flush of soft growth will not have enough time to harden off before winter. Fertilizing in the first year after planting - or any other time - without a soil test indicating a need for it is never a good idea. The weather conditions you describe are ideal for phytophthora infections, but those that effect the roots would be nearly impossible to diagnose from looking at a leaf. Poor drainage is probably the number one cause of root rot problems, so anything that can be done to improve it would be worthwhile. Do cut back to healthy green tissue and be patient. The presence of buds is a good sign and it's highly likely that the rhododendrons will recover.

well .... in my neck of the woods.. catalpa is a fully deciduous tree in winter ... IT IS SUPPOSED TO LOSE ITS LEAVES WHEN the LIGHT AND TEMP levels of fall tell it to go to sleep ... most plants that go dormant.. need to go dormant .. so HOPEFULLY the one of yours that went dormant.. will come back out of dormancy ... and it wouldnt surprise me if the other went into dormancy ... i am not an ID expert ... other will come by and give you the latin name of your plant... use that to google CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS ... of the latin name ... if these peeps fail .. there is a NAME THAT PLANT FORUM ... you may have to free them to the great outdoors.. if they can survive indoors the rest of this winter ... unless its still possible to put them outside in your zone ... i am not clear what DC means, zone wise ... if you love them as pets ... you are borderline on KILLING THEM WITH TOO MUCH LOVE ... be careful with that.. they are trees... we plant them in mother earth.. and given just a LITTLE care.. they can live for centuries... try to raise them in the house... and you are in for no end of trouble ... get the ID ... and we can go from there. .. happy holidays.. ken

If you follow Citrus's instructions and do not over water at this time, it should be just fine.. You will get to know your tree well and it will respond to your care because you care and came here to be successful... The two main cause for twig die back other than being pot bound is over or under watering.. When you bring a tree inside, usually within a few days once it senses it is not in its favorite environment, it can take days or weeks for the roots to resume taking up moisture like before because they rebel and try to adjust..It is critical that at this time that the roots are in a very porous mix and not stay wet for days...Because growth has almost stopped, the roots can get damaged by rot. I always notice that at certain times my trees will all of sudden dry out slower than usual and stop taking up moisture as they once had outdoors..Once things resume as usual, usually within a few weeks, you will notice that you will have to water more frequently again.. It is important at this time that you do not under water... Hope this helps for the next time you have to do a drastic change to its environment or root disturbance.. seraki,

Rooting hormone will not harm your plants, maybe will stimulate root growing.
It is better not to remove damaged leaves yet as they are of some protecton for stems. You say ,you will do it tonight,do it after sun set or tomorrow before sun rise.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. One of them died. :( The other one is doing much better. I am starting to see some new growth on it too now. I've been keeping a very close eye on it. There are only about 4-5 1" or smaller leaves on that one. The weather here has been nice too, not as hot as usual. So I think that has helped. THanks for asking. :)
