Friday and its still hot and humid :-(

My title says it all. I'm spending most of my day ordering supplies for winter projects (quilting and embroidery), looking for that special TALL, white, round form daylily and then looking for canning supplies as I want to try doing sauces once the tomatoes start ripening.
So here is a sample of what is blooming here today. Got to hot and humid to continue outside.

EARTH AND ALL STARS - new this spring from Phil Korth. Lighter than his photo but not too bad first opening.

EVIDENCE OF ALIENS - started today. I like the way the bloom pulls back like it is in a wind tunnel.

PLUM FOOLISH - gotta move this one this year.

WESTMINSTER LACE - moved last fall so the scapes appear shorter than normal.

CAPACITY FOR WONDER - just starting

WESTBOURNE HARD TIMES - another one I want to have leave. Fine with buds and scapes but looks too much like ones I have already

WREN'S SONG - has been blooming but never can get a good picture of it before the sun hits it full on.

WHERE'S CAPTAIN KIRK - planted in the spring of 2012 but few buds and doesn't increase well yet. Time will tell.

LESLIE RENEE - planted near WREN'S SONG so getting a decent pic is hard. Best I could do so far.

CHICAGO FIRECRACKER - finally doubling

SUBURBAN POMPADOUR - reliable double

and ending with my ( and my husbands) garden and project companion Marmalade. She was keeping an eye on me but didn't want to move again off the porch. She got tired running up and down the garden beds. Smart cat, it was too hot.

I don't see many places that offer Jealous Jake. Is it not a fast increaser? I like its looks. Plum Foolish looks good too. I've had the same problem the last few days of not being able to get shots without the sun. Are you still working with seedlings?

Jealous Jake and Freedoms Triumph look wonderful together! I really like them. Mauna Loa is a beautiful orange. I have that one, and don't remember it blooming...although the scapes are there to prove it. Maybe it started the week I helped with Vacation Bible School. Who knows? Trahlyta is doing wonderfully well. Mine did the est ever this year. Hot Tamales and Red Hots is beautiful. Love the way Evidence of Aliens has the wind blown look. Earth and All Stars, the new Korth, is a beauty. You have too many really great ones to choose one.

Suppose to climb to 85 here today, 94 tomorrow and 90 on Saturday. The little town I grew up in is having their annual homecoming Friday and Saturday, just can't imagine me sitting under a tent eating chicken bbq in 90 degree heat. Plus sitting along side the street earlier in the afternoon watching the parade. It's a tradition for my mom and I to watch the parade and then go eat chicken, but maybe not this year.

It was 97 at noon today with more to come until Tues/Wednesday when we drop down to the high 80's (Similar to your forecast Julia). I am so sick of the heat and humidity. I was out deadheading the roses last night and cussing them for having bloomed so much....I've still got reblooms on a few daylilies. Indian Ripple, Pink Aloha and a new one this year, Sweeten Creek (note to Debra). When the temperature finally drops the gardeners around here call it "pansy season". That's what I'm looking forward to most right now-Pansy weather...............Maryl - P.S. Monday they say will be in the 105-106 range. Ugh!

Okay, before I continue, Roseguy you MUST post some pics of your rose garden here. 1000 ROSES!?!?!?!?! Wow, and all in Florida. Please share. Rachel, based on what I know about the soil in Central Florida and what I know about the weather pattern up there, I would suggest you plan out what you want in detail and begin section by section. Never get rid of a rose. Let that thing die on its own before you toss it. I've had roses with dieback coming up and down the stem and seen it make it with some TLC, so never give up. Shoot, I have a Crescendo that I got bareroot from Breck's with massive crown gall that I know will eventually succumb but I can't get myself to give up completely! Here's what I'd do (for what's it's worth, lol): 1.) Plan out your yard. Use MS Publisher or get a cheap poster board and plot out where you want all your roses to go. Make sure to take into account the rose's habit as well as the color scheme that you're going for. With all that space you have, you can afford to space out your roses using the three foot rule. Also, make sure to place your roses in the sunniest spots of your land, no use putting them next to root greedy trees when they will already have a hard time establishing a good root system. 2.) Create beds for your roses. I have installed my beds using Castle Rock pavers. I purchase them a little every weekend and now I have great big beds that look good. Once the pavers are in place dig out the existing soil down one to two feet. The task is arduous, but if done in sections it will seem doable. Call C&C Peat or The Bushel Stop and have them deliver several yards of their potting soil to fill in your beds. 3.) Plant your roses one section at a time. Remember to cut them back a bit and to place the weaker/smaller bushes to the outer edges of your beds to give them plenty of room and sun to grow. 4.) Apply mulch and possibly ground cover to your beds. 5.) Get into the habit of mixing in fertilizer onto your roses. I like to create a tea using alfalfa pellets, fish emulsion, and seaweed extract. Occasionally, apply a water soluble fertilizer like miracle grow in cooler weather. Remember, during the June to August your job is to maintain your rose's existing leaves and not to grow it further, so fertilize during the cooler months. 6.) Develop a spray program that works for you. You have purchased quite an arsenal, but there's no point using something that is not needed. For Florida gardeners, the go-to chemicals are Banner Maxx/Honor Guard, Mancozeb, and Conserve SC. Cleary, Subdue Maxx, and Alliette are other great chemicals that can be applied between applications of the aforementioned spray program so your pests don't develop an immunity to any of the medicines. Spray every seven to fourteen days as needed. Spraying too frequently may actually hurt your plants. 7.) Come here for help. Years ago I found this site (then under a different incarnation that has undergone two major changes over the years) and I found the answers to questions I didn't even know to ask. Know that you are among friends that share you passion for roses. 8.) Understand that the past five months have been atypical. When the nursery that produces the roses I buy tell me that they have experienced the same problems that I have had due to difficult weather conditions, I relax at the thought that little ole me, with my limited resources, am not alone in the problems. With any luck, the recent weather pattern will usher new healthy growth and turn the tide that has brought so much hardship to our rose collections. Good luck! -Adrian.

msrpisi: I have 1 Mary Rose and 1 Heritage growing 3 feet apart. Over 10 years old each. 4-5 hours of sun a day, tops. MR gets a bit more. Your description of how MR does matches mine, re: BS/defoliation. That's with 1 March copper spray, and (past years) 1-2 "other" fungicide sprays per year. Good initial flush, then sparse smattering of bloom after big heat subsides. Heritage in past years has given 3 flushes a year - 1st best, of course. With same Rx as above, trivial BS and no to minimal defoliation. Last year I just did the single March spray on it - no difference. Some of the healthiest foliage of all my roses. I do see Heritage was near the top of this http://www.nybg.org/gardens/rose-garden/performers-2010.php list's rankings. Although, as it has good delicate fragrance, some of the high score reflected that (rather than just disease resistance and flower power). I'm presuming the 10 point scale system Peter K. used there was akin to the 100 point scale he used here: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/3840656/spray-free-roses-spreadsheet-kukielski Interesting Heritage doesn't even appear on the spreadsheet (or I missed it). It looks like you managed to get plenty of photos before the heat got to you. My favorite is Temporary and Eternal, which is just a lovely polychrome and so nice in a clump. I also enjoyed the clump shots of Half Moon Key and Trahlyta. Your clump of Mauna Loa is just on fire there. Mine only put up one scape this year, although I have 8-9 fans. I think it must get too much shade now to bloom. My favorite single bloom was your new Korth. I'd be interested in seeing more of that one. Marmalade is one smart cookie. Staying in the shade is the best idea when it's this hot and muggy.

mantis: Jealous Jake is not a fast increaser for me. I get most of my Carpenters from The Lily Farm (Mark Carpenter).

And yes, I am still growing seedlings. I've got too many to take photos of them all but soon I'll post pics. They are still blooming here too. Gotta get that part organized better .

What a bloom season, eh?

MAUNA LOA -. I have that one too, but it hasn't increased at all, maybe one fan.I had bopught a doble fan about 5 yrs ago at one of the stores,forgrt which one, but its moved anyway.. DOUBLE RIVER WYE is a very pretty one, too. and the cat is smart to get out of the sun and find some shade.

I like your polychromes very much. I looked up Capacity For Wonder for I didn't know anything about it. Looks like a good one, and Temporary and Eternal is lovely. All the clump shots are great, and I just want to comment on Double River Wye. I like the look of the flowers and that shade of yellow is a big favorite of mine. Marmalade is a smart kitty, no use getting out in the sun when the temp goes up. Avedon

Avedon: If your interested in CAPACITY FOR WONDER, I have two clumps of it and would like to eliminate one. It would be about 5 to 6 fans. I just ask that you pay the postage for shipping and it won't ship till late August or early September.
Registration Info:36",Tet,6",SEv,ML and that is very accurate as to how it performs here. With your zone, it may start earlier in the season for you. I just finished photos from early this afternoon and here is a pic of the one I would be eliminating. You might want to find out if any folks in your zone/region grow it and how it does. CAPACITY FOR WONDER is truely beautiful. It ties with HOT TAMALES AND RED HOTS for my favorite. Marmalade is a pretty kitty. I love tortie patterned cats.
