DL's planted too close - OK until next year?

Hi,

I received a very nice (!!) order of mini daylilies from Homestead Farms and was racing the lightening and thunder to get them planted. The clumps averaged ~4 fans, which I divided in half. As such, I had about 2x as many DL's as I planned for! I ended up planting them ~8" apart. Will that be OK until next season? I'd love to let them bloom next year, then move half the clumps to a different bed.

Please tell me that with my short growing season, it will be OK! If not, I will get out there and move some of them tomorrow.

I would move them now. That way, you'll only be stressing them once. If you leave them in the ground, they will use their energy to form a nice root system. Then next year if you move them again, they'll be stressed a second time, and may not bloom as well. Just my humble opinion. Someone else may give better advice.

I think I would leave them. If they are mini's and not real vigorous, 8" apart might last a couple years. If they do turn out to very vigorous, just try to get as much root ball as possible when you move them. If you don't disturb the roots, they will never know they were transplanted.

I have always purposely planted my garden crowded. I plant in four 4' X 8' raised beds. That is a total garden space of about 120 sq. feet or a normal garden 10' wide and 12' long. In that area I am growing the following this year. 24 Better Boy tomato plants 8 Juliet tomato plants ( as well as a few volunteer tomato plants from last years crop) 9 jalapeno pepper plants 9 yellow sweet banana pepper plants 13 bell pepper plants 45 Burpee Pic & Pic yellow crook neck squash plants 12 Burpee Early Pride cucumber plants 12 Burpee Sweet Hybrid cucumber plants 1 pack of stringless green beans ( supposedly enough to produce 30 lbs of beans.) 1 pack of carrot seed/plants 1 pack of lettuce seed /plants 2 Asian long green eggplant plants 120 Texas A&M 1015 sweet onions. My observations have been that plants don't mind being crowded as long as they receive the needed nutrients and moisture. You just have to learn which plants are compatible with each other. For me, the denser planting provides shading for some plants which have difficulty with to much direct sun. It protects some fruits from the inquiring eye of predatory birds and other animals. The drawbacks are the fact that it is more difficult to harvest. (if you can't see it, you can't pick it.) Humidity stays higher in the denser growth promoting fungus and mildew growth. All of my plants are doing very well with a strong harvest of squash, onions, lettuce, and cucumbers so far. The tomatoes and green beans are about one week away from harvest (I have some of the largest tomatoes I've ever grown well protected down in the thick growth). The pepper plants are loaded with small peppers which I could start picking tomorrow, but will probably wait another week. The only point I'm trying to make is the fact that you can grow a lot in a very small space if properly planted. I have five acres of land, but I plant this way because I enjoy it. Ted

Hi Rabbit: I read in previous post that you are a writer, made $$$ on a novel, I would like to know what's the name of your novel so I can check out. I like to read in my zone 5a winter. I appreciate the kosher-chicken-mushroom recipe you gave to me here ... except my husband gives me dirty looks when I put salt, and my kid gives me dirty look when I put mushroom ... so I haven't made it. Per your question of banana peels buried under bush ... that's great too. I chop up banana peels NPK 0-3-42 with a scissor and soak in molasses & a bit of vinegar for my tap water at pH 8 to extract banana's soluble phosphorus. Per your question of when to stimulate blooms? Right after it's done flowering, then I give it nutrients for the next flush. Right after moving a rose, I also give it soluble-nutrients to encourage root-growth. Alameda (Judith) in Texas wrote on how she forced stingy Graham Thomas to bloom: "When I was at Chamblee's last September, I asked what in the world I could do to the thing to make it bloom. They suggested Carl Pool BR 61. I doused it with that.......lo and behold, a few fall blooms! I did it again in spring and the bush actually bloomed well! I also used the combination of Spray N Gro/Bill's Perfect Fertilizer on it. After the bloom cycle, I cut it back - when I pruned in spring, I didn't allow those long tendrils." Rabbit: Carl Pool BR 61 has NPK of 9-58-8, plus trace elements. The high phosphorus is from monopotassium phosphate, which I tested using 0-58-34 bought from Kelp4Less, tons of blooms on Sonia Rykiel and recently transplanted Golden Cel. A cheaper source at $6 is MiracleGro Soluble Bloom Booster, NPK 10-52-10, with all trace elements. I tested that on Stephen Big Purple bought as tiny band this April. The result? 3 buds 1st flush, 7 buds 2nd flush, pinch that off, a week later, more buds were formed. Those zillion-petals also demand calcium, best in soluble gypsum, plus extra potassium. Soluble gypsum I bought cheap from Kelp4Less ($8 for 5 lbs.), free shipping. Sulfate of Potash has lower salt index 43, but I prefer banana peels with zero salt. Plantation blackstrap molasses supplies 20% calcium, 17% potassium, 20% iron & other trace elements. In soluble-fertilizer experiments, the best root growth was achieved through high potassium and high calcium, plus decent phosphorus. Best root growth also means more flowering.

Hi All, I appreciate your wisdom. :-) Even though I may have sounded nuts (and I was!), I realize "Rome wasn't built in a day." I'm glad I've gotten to the plantings this year and think they will help a bit in time. Heaven knows that's the truth for the house--there was *nothing* here when I bought 4 years ago. So, it's come a *long* way. But, I'm a school teacher and during Aug-May I have *no* time. Honestly-none. So, I do what I can in the summer (although we have work on prep and admin. now). While I enjoy the product of gardening/interior design, I enjoy process less--esp in the garden where it is physically hard for me to work (due to an injury that makes walking/digging painful). Soooo...I'll admit I'm looking for something that works the first time, if possible. That said, I'm not beyond moving things if I have to and next year will move 2 laurels--somewhere--as they don't work where they are. And, I do enjoy it at its core. All this reminds me of the "what I learned from gardening" thread. I do need to learn patience and to enjoy the modest things that the garden brings. :-) So, resalesally--you are right that I should just "go" and stop obsessing. HA! :-) Nell- Thanks for your comments, too. It is a great door that they have. (Wonder if I might be too lazy to clean those panes?? Hmmm....) Memo- Thanks for the awning suggestion. Trouble is, I just don't like awnings. I know I'm getting away from the authenticity of the house a bit...but based on my completely crude "paint" experiments in WORD, thing something raised a bit will help give me what I'm looking for. But...you might be right about the awning being so tiny compared to the stoop. (Man, I have *got* to learn photoshop to test your theory out.) As for the lattice...so you're saying to post it in the ground *perpendicular* to the stoop? Is that right? Hmmm...possibly. Hadn't thought of that. What do you think about covering the concrete w/ wood and a railing and giving the house a more "cottage" feel? EVERYONE - Paint trim vote for the bottom of the house?? Thanks, ya'll! I'm also still in recovery mode from this year's garden. I normally do spend time planning next year's garden in the fall and reviewing the previous gardening season in my journal, but I've been pretty busy with other things that thoughts of the garden are considerably rare these days. Everything in the garden is done for the season. We had a fairly large bin of compost that was emptied and spread to make room for chopped leaves. The bin is 2/3s full of leaves already. We extended the front garden by about 4 feet, covering grass with lasagna layers that are waiting for spring. We finally got around to pulling out grass and weeds from an area on the side of the house, that has developed a nice large patch of moss, moved a shurb there and put another lasagna layered area around that for further planting in spring. Added three new shrubs this fall and barely a couple of dozen new bulbs, etc., etc. So I guess I have general plans but I don't like to invest in the details yet, because it's a long winter and you know the old saying 'the best laid plans of mice and men....' In general, the back yard is going to need adjustments. I will be moving things around as usual. The front yard should have the lion's share of any major work. I have overgrown shrubs to come out and I'm 'this close' to mulching over the small patch of lawn that's left and extending the garden bed that is there already. There is a large Maple that I'm hoping to fill in under it with epimedium, hostas, ferns, tiarella, etc. It already has a very good stand of crocus in the spring and I may add other small bulbs next fall. But I'm looking forward to a break this winter as I always do. I want to add more houseplants over the winter, but I won't be giving that a thought until January. A little winter sowing, maybe. I collected a good amount of seed from my favorite Hostas and hope to have seedlings to grow on for the front Maple. As soon as the holidays are over, I'm sure I will be counting the days until spring too. [g]

I normally plant newer hems fairly close (12-18") and move the middle clump in a year or two when they get too crowded. Since these are minis, I would just leave them for this year. Otherwise there's too much empty space between clumps.

This is not the time of year to be moving them. Miniatures should be fine at 8 inches apart. They will be fine until early spring.

Thanks - I moved a few of the middle ones to a new area as the storm cleared out last night before dark, and that opening the bed alot! Now it should definitely be fine, even through next year.

This is actually a pretty good time of year to be moving DL's in my climate. May has too many hard freezes, June is dry and extremely hot, now we are in the monsoon season and it's cooled off. I had to put on a long sleeved shirt to work outside this morning - it was cold!

Now if I can get their drippers setup, they are done! Hooray!!

Hi my zone is the same as yours but due to weather conditions I treat this area as a 3. At this time I just put in a few hundred more seedlings bringing my plants up around 1000 or so . The seedlings are about 4in apart my others are from 6in to 1ft so dont worry leave them alone thay should be alright.The only time my plants seem to get stressed out is when I move a clump to break it apart and then I will cut them back to about 6 in. from the crown.

I don't know anything about your climate so wouldn't be much good giving advice but I was one of those people thinking that they would be fine until next year because they are minis.

I am with jakejones on planting new daylilies in the garden. (Finially someone who thinks like I do!). I have planted my front yard daylily garden so that it will fill in quicker and I will not have that empty look for years. As soon as they look crowded, I am moving the middle clump of each group row of three clumps to a new location.
