Crown Princess Margareta
Comments (19)Boncrow, I live in east Texas. My CPM is on a small arbor. It gets full morning sun, mid-day sun and my horse barn provides shade from the evening sun from 2-3pm onwards. Right now, it is covered in buds, a few have bloomed. This was a plant from Hortico several years ago. I had it potted up for awhile, it didn't look that great but planted it. I have kept it well watered and fertilized with horse compost and it just covers my little arbor. When in bloom, I have no doubt it will look like the photo in David Austin's catalog, tho not as big. It bloomed well last year but I cant recall how much it bloomed after its spring flush. I have been very pleased with it and can recommend it. Another climber that is doing really well that I love to brag on is Tess of the d'Ubervilles. It is in the same bed, but is on a fan trellis up against the horse barn, so gets shade sooner than CPM. Right now, it is just dripping with those luscious magenta red blooms, so healthy! I would definitely get CPM - my suggestion would be to plant where it gets sun until the hot afternoon blast. This bed seems to be just perfect for Austins. Princess Anne, a new bush year before last, is just covered with beautiful pink blooms. My Austins generally come into their own the 2nd year. Wollerton Hall, planted in all day sun, is just gorgeous right now, as are all the rest I got a few years ago. Very pleased with them! Will try to get some photos. Comments (17)Hi Aliska...yeah...I checked out the pruning thread above and asked a couple of questions. I know what you mean...I had a Don Juan that bloomed great last year and is deader than a doornail this Spring! Your pic is lovely..THAT looks so delicate!!Glad you hung in there with it...may have to do that with my GJ !! True CPM has great top clusters..I finally have a bloom on one bottom cane...the leaves on her look pretty good compared to GJ. That's why I checked out the thread. I sprayed but was careful not to do so in the sun and made sure it dried well before exposure. I'm not going to spray for anything for awhile and like you...wait and see.I just needed to know whether or not to try and train it to the fence now and whether to prune it back hard if so...I'd rather it would climb than shrub. The first two sets of blooms had no dark edges..so..maybe you are right..it's prob okay and isn't serious. I was just expecting this flush to look like the others. I seem to hover over her and I need to stop doing that...I just used Miracle Grow for roses after first flush...she may need fish emulsion...already placed some coffee grounds in soil a week ago. After reading the pruning thread I felt a little better..considering she's evidently one of the harder to grow ones...but that fragrance is sure worth it!! Be sure and read that thread...it described exactly what mine is doing. Hopefully I'll get an answer on the questons I had. Gosh!! Pruning that thing back hard may give me HIVES!!! I hate pruning...but so far each rose seems to have been pretty forgiving!!! Thanks so much for all your responses and help...it just makes my day!! I am so new at all of this and I started it all to sort of continue my dad's love of roses. He's been gone 10 years now and I've just gotten the nerve. BTW..there's another thread near the top there "Look what just popped out" is part of it...his roses are something to behold. He has trellis all down the side of his house..well..check it out if you haven't. Now..there's an idea..only my husband planted 3 simplicity roses for me today..sat down..and said...okay...no more!! He just finished the arbor..I'll try and post it tom. He has to paint the house next week and make another arbor..so..he's got "projectitis"!! HEE! I'm going to go out for a few mins and see the Moon Over Ky and listen to the frogs in the pond and plot my next move!!! Thanks again..I'd say that you more than know your roses...it's sooo nice sharing with each other!! Catch 'ya tom!!...See MoreAnyone in inland SoCal grow Crown Princess Margareta and Carding Mill
Comments (16)I have Carding Mill own-root now and after two years it's a foot high and might have had one bud that I took off. I had it before on root stock, I think from Austin, and it exploded and bloomed all the time and did not frizzle as I remember Monsieur Tillier and Clementina Carbonieri did that I planted nearby. It's hotter and drier now but I think this is still a good rose for a hot inland climate, especially if you can give it late afternoon shade. I hope that my dwarf will grow and give me a bloom or two before I die but I'm not counting on it. My only hope is that this rainy winter might have given it more of an incentive to thrive, although it had plenty of water before then. I don't grow the other rose, and in fact don't have any of the newer Austins. If I were you I would give Carding Mill a try, only not own-root, unless I just ended up with a dud. Edited: I cross-posted with you pat, but your rose is gorgeous. Sorry about the blackspot. My former one never had any disease and neither does my present dwarflet....See MoreHow would 2 Crown Princess Margareta's do climbing on a NJ arbor?
Comments (26)Your Desdemona was mislabelled?! What is she then?! Now I feel great I didn't go get your Margareta yesterday, even though it was very tempting :-) I don't think I saw Golden Celebration at Dearborn. They have the poet's wife, Graham Thomas, and a couple of TGs in the yellow hue. Baker nursery was closed for good (bad). In my failing attempt to find Jude the Obscure several weeks ago, I drove to the address listed for Corner Copia Farm Market , but ended up in a field. I then called and was told they weren't there for four years! I went to Williams Nursery in Westfield last Thursday, and found they only had three or four pots left. They also raised their price to $49. I was so disappointed that I didn't pay attention to the names. You may call them and ask. They do pick up their phone and check stock for you based on color. Good luck! PS. I am new to gardening too. but I think you should be able to plant one rose for now. I planted TG on one side of my trellis, with Eden on another. Now I wish I had put a clematis on the other side or even morning glory, as Clematis will grow faster so I don't have to wait several years for my trellis to be filled....See Morerathersmallbunny
