corn & bell pepper plant

Hey everyone,

i am having problems with my corn and bell pepper plants. my green bell pepper plant is looking healthy but i am getting ZERO bell peppers, when it first starting sprouting bell peppers i would get like 3 or 4 a week now i have none and i added fertilizer to it and i still get nothing :( i dont know what i am doing wrong, the plant itself looks healthy though.

i also planted corn plants (cant remember what type) and i picked a corn from the plant and half of it has corn and the other half is bare (does that make sense?) i don't know if maybe the corn was not ready to be picked or what. i planted both plants in march if that helps.

this is my first time gardening so i have many questions lol

The corn problem is because of incomplete pollination.

Some will probably tell you it is due to over fertilization but in my opinion it has to do with the heat. I will assume they are still flowering just not setting fruit? I would though be stingy with the fertilizer just so the plants don't get too huge. I fertilize my peppers weekly until they hit 18 inches high then no more fert for the season. My ground is very rich though so that might not work for others. As it is my pepper plants are chest high. How much direct sun do the plants get a day?

Corn is definitely incomplete pollination.

It is called "Blossom Drop" - catchy name right? ;) I linked the FAQ on it below but you can find all sorts of info on it by using that as the search term. Causes - "caused by the use of excess nitrogen fertilizers or dry windy conditions, but the most common cause is temperature extremes. Tomatoes, peppers and beans are especially picky about the air temps when it comes time to set fruit. If the night temps fall below 55 or rise above 75 or if the day temps are above 90, the pollen becomes tacky and non-viable. Pollination cannot occur. Well I'd sure dispute any benefit to topping peppers plants but since you already did it then yellow new growth is usually either over-water or nutrient related. In this case the plant could easily be root bound in such a small pot and that would lead to both water and nutrient problems because it can't retain either. About all you can do is transplant it to a bigger pot and give it a weak dose of fertilizer. You'll know as soon as you pull it out of this pot if it is root bound or not. Dave

The blooms look like my ground cherries (Physalis). Mine have a grayer green foliage though. I never grow bell peppers but my japs and anahiems have solid white blooms, I think.

I agree on the fertilizer, very much. I'm also in CA, and I know where I am, my peppers are really struggling this year because of the chilly, dreary weather we've been having where I am. I expect them to perk up once we get into our normal weather pattern (whenever that's going to be). One thing I've learned with sweet peppers (especially bells) here is that they really do appreciate some afternoon shade in the hotter part of the year. I try to plant mine where they get completely shaded by about 3pm and they seem to do a lot better (hot peppers just don't seem to care, so they go into the furnace part of the garden). But also, again, fertilizing regularly really helps.

I also think your problem with the peppers not fruiting is a result of the heat wave we have experienced. I have many times over summered peppers and had them start producing again as temps cooled.

Your corn garden is too small, corn is pollinated by the wind from the tassels at the top of the corn stalk. If your garden of corn is small the wind just blows the pollen to the sides where there's no corn growing. Plant a larger garden of corn and your corn ears will be full.

I agree with captturbo that it is now too hot for the pepper plant to set new peppers. Just wait until the hot days of the summer are over and your pepper plants will start setting peppers again. Just keep them watered, no fertilizer, through the hot summer months. When they start setting peppers again you can lightly fertilize them.

thank you everyone for your helpful advice. ill definitely plant more corn next year, and ill wait it out for the bell peppers.
