Sugar Cane Juicer

I received my sugar cane juicer in the mail two weeks ago and was able to install it last week. I had my first glass of real cane juice last Sunday - IT WAS HEAVENLY - A DRINK FIT FOR THE GODS.

Anyway I guess I now have to use up some of that gardening space for sugar canes. Are there varieties which are better for juicing? Does anyone have any to trade?

Jay, I love cane juice. I had it a lot as a child.
You are absolutely correct when you state that is heavenly.

I did a very SMALL quantity last year in my juicer, enough to cook down to maybe 1/3 cup of syrup. Worked on that small scale, but I could see that anything more than that would have either fried the motor or ruined the blades pretty fast. This was done when the seed heads were mature on the sorghum, perhaps harvesting while still very green and only half-grown MIGHT work. But, seriously, as stated above, you'd need some type of press and some type of griner to do this right The good news about my little experiment was that I didn't LIKE the taste of the sorghum syrup, so don't have to worry about it again. I'll still grow it for the grain, though, as it makes a pretty good flour.

Boom1, I would suggest contacting the USDA in Miami to see if they might possibly send you some new sugar cane germplasm. I think they have one of the largest sugar cane germplasm collections in the world. Bajansun, How tall is your june plum tree? Does it fruit once a year or throughout the year? Crazy to grow sugar cane in container?

I've grown sugar cane in containers in zone7. The first back in 2016 looked like Pele's smoke, I picked up at local nursery. It was part of "window sill collection" barrista pack (coffee, tea, sugar cane). It grew fast from coffee stirrer size in March to good eating cane in Sept. I up potted about 6x from original 2.5in container to 20 gal root pouch. I wasn't able to over winter. I just got new Jamaican sugar cane from baker creek this year. Same coffee stirrer size but growing well sending out lots of new shoots. I may experiment with one in ground and one potted to see who gets thicker cane.

Sugar cane is in the grass family I think. It starts easily from cuttings the roots growing from the segmented sections. East of Lake Okeechobbee is nothing but on big sugar cane farm. Unfortunately this used to be the Everglades. I think a mom and pop vegetable stand could get
you some stalks.

I have been looking for sugar cane plants for a long time. Does anyone know where to find it? I can't even find a website online to order it. I would really love to grow it!

Hello everyone I grow sugar cane here at the zoo. The way I do it is to take a cutting place it on its side half buried in soil. I can spare some cuttings.

Keiki - I got it through the internet(ebay) from Brazil - cost $400. It is very easy to use but it is manually operated - theme word "manually". YOu have to crank out the juice. IT is a great little machine. I attached it to a plate that attached to my truck hitch - making it portable.

Thegardenzone - Sugar cane grows as far as your eyes can see off of state road 80. I usually use the bottom part of the cane, lop off the top part and replant it. You can lay the entire length of the cane in dirt and cover it and it will start a new plant at every joint pretty much.

I am trying my hand at sugar cane also. I brought some cane from Bravo grocery store around Dec. (I think it cost me about 1.99). I cut it into sections and planted it horizontally in a small bucket by a window. I didn't do anything special beyond water it approx every other day or when dry. When it sprouted and the weather broke I planted it outside in the dirt. It's a few feet now. If If your interested i'll try to take a picture.

I like sugar cane but I don't think it's worth $400. Try local West Indian and Hispanic grocery stores they usually have it. If not ask.

I'm sorry I thought you purchased cane for $400. After rereading it I realized it was the juicer.
