New Gardner, Wilted Peppers,yellow leaves, white marks on leaves

Hello I am new here and new to gardening in flordia, New Port Richey. I just planted my first veggie garden. I planted everything from seed and everything was dong great then I went out there and everything was covered in a white powder which happened over night. I think it is a fungus/Mildew. I removed the really bad plants. Some things I relplaced with store bought plants cucumbers, squash, Got some tomaotes and peppers those seeds did not come up. My squash is dead my cucumbers leaves are turning yellow the tomotoes bottom leaves are turing brown and yellow they have white squigly marks on them and serval other leaves have the white squigly marks. My pepper plants leaves are witled. I have been trying differnt sprays and funisides natural and storebought. The only things that seem to be doing okay is my cowpeas, corn and lettuce. I would really appericate some advise from some more experniced gardeners. I don't know if I need to plant a more disease resistiant plant and if I do where do I get them. Or get some ladybugs in the garden or do something eles that I just don't know about. Thanks Janice

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to summer vegetable gardening!
It's a tough time of year for most familiar veggies, as you see. Humidity, heat, mildew, bugs.
Did you see stunted, gnarly, bubbled roots on the plants you removed? That would be nematodes...kill plants quickly.
The white squigly marks are probably leaf miners, not a huge problem unless there are lots of them.
You can use the "search" feature at the top of this page to find past conversations about growing vegetables in Florida. It should give you a lot of info.

I would remove a couple of lower rows of leaves and repot the plant in the smaller pot. Like half of the current one. Exactly as Ima_digger and Tommyr pointed - heavy wet soil = is a paradise for fungus gnats - mix a new soil - cut it half and half with perlite to lighten it up. The gnats live in organic soil, if you get vermiculite and when you are repotting - fill the last inch of pot with vermiculite - you will significantly reduce the gnats. I do not think it is possible to get rid of them without pesticide. The adult gnats are flying and laying eggs - and the larva lives in a first inch of soil. You can get some mild pesticide - like neem oil based 3-in-1 spray, and soak the soil with it. The first thing to do - to keep your pot on a dry side. It will really help with bugs and will stop the decline. The pot is too big, the soil is too wet - and this is the main problem. Good Luck Irina

Sugar Magnolia, Since you have so many hydrangeas and questions, the best advice I can give you, is to go to hydrangeashydrangeas.com and learn about what you have and the care and pruning of each type. To a great degree, I think you may be sabatoging your own blooms/plants through lack of understanding the basics of hydrangea care. You're welcome and good luck with your plants! There is a very helpful Hawaiian gardener that goes by Honu who grows tomatoes and other things in Hawaii. Hope you meet up with her in cyberspace one day. She could give you all sorts of suggestions. I linked something I had in my favorites which you might find interesting. (I probably have 1 million favorites dealing with tomatoes). I saved it because he contends with Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus which I also have had on two occasions. Watering it only 2x in six mo is definitely not enough. Soil should be changed completely - it looks like peat, it is pulling away from the sides of pot. When you take it out of pot, it may loose all existing leaves. These plants loose leaves very easily under good conditions, so don't be surprised. Only way to find out is to try. All healthy leaves most likely will grow into new plants, just toss them on surface of new potting mix. It should be well draining and without peat. Try 50:50 mix of coarse perlite and Cactus & Succulent soil. Get all old soil off the roots if possible. If you loose all the roots but stems are OK otherwise, they can be rooted again. It is also very etiolated = not getting enough light. Plant should stay in a window space where it will get some more light.

Welcome to Florida! As a gardener, you must do two things right away - subscribe to Florida Gardening (you can do this on line; www.floridagardening.com), and get in touch with your county extension agent. You can probably find him in the blue pages of your phone book.
Fungus diseases are rampant in Florida because of the humidity and the daily rain in the summer. A lot of the things you grew in the spring "up north" are winter crops down here.
There are plenty of gardeners on this forum who are master gardeners and/or extremely knowledgeable, so you will probably have answers to all of your questions very soon!
