I'm so excited! My plummie is sprouting!

I guess only a gardener could get excited about a little stick with a few sprigs coming out. But this is my first Plumeria and I am so happy it's growing! I thought I'd share a picture of it. Thanks SusieQ!

What a find! Hard to believe someone would actually throw that away! But I'm sure happy for you that they did. Our dump doesn't allow anyone to take anything. What a shame since so much could be salvaged or recycled. But apparently they are afraid of lawsuits if someone gets hurt. I think dumps should have a section for 'good' stuff to put aside and let folks have it. But then we can't even curb shop here as you can't put anything out there. :o( I think Phoenix must hate recycling!! How dumb is that. hugs, Karen

Thanks, guys :-) Some mildly analytical stuff: 1. The containers that have sprouted are all part of a the ones I grouped together in big garbage bags...I guess that ups the temps a bit, having the big plastic around them. I put a lot of containers in the bags for easy transport and for dog protection (from picking up a container and running off with it...which has happened before). Not all the containers in the bags have sprouted (there's a whole lot more of them), but those on the list above have. 2. The sprouted containers are also with a group of containers that are in Southern exposure. ( I have other bags of containers on my porch, in Northern exposure). This proves why it could be bad to have them in Southern exposure, because now, I'm more inclined to worry, since we now have snow and it's going to be in the 20s or lower tonight. But then, the ouotdoor temps have been in the low to mid 20s every night for the past two weeks and that didn't keep them from sprouting. ..but I'm not looking at those containers or opening them up...not for a few days, at least. Whatever will be will be...and I have a feeling a lot of those sprouts will be just fine. --I think I do need to slip a thermometer inside one of those bags of containers, though. I'm curious as to how much warmer it is in there. Linda

Yeah, my neigbhors asked me how I was able to achieve that many plants. They saw me working on the garden around early March. They were curious about the garden beds I was making. They saw the milk jugs. I explained to them what it was and also gave them the Wintersown site. I actually watched their reactions when they saw it. They didn't pay much attention to it kinda like "oh, ok". However, when plants started to come out/bloom, they went back to me and asked, "was that from the tiny greenhouse". :) I'm going to make more beds maybe by fall once my knee gets better. :D Thanks mnwsgal! :)

You can plant these in those 16-oz plastic drinking cups, or in the tall styrofoam cups. I made holes in the bottom of the plastic cups by heating a kitchen fork over the flame of the stove until hot, and poking about 8 holes in the bottom for drainage. It is much easier and quicker to make holes in the styrofoam cups, as you do not have to heat the fork. I filled these cups with Miracle Grow Seed Starter Mix (not the pottiing soil). You can get that at Lowe's. I moistened the mix well with water, firming it down. I then made a small depression in the mix with my little finger, and carefully set the sprouted seed in it. I then covered it with about 1/4" of vermiculite (also available at Lowe's) and put the filled cups in a disposable aluminum foil pan, filled with water half way up the sides of the cups. I set them in the shade on our porch and misted them with water 4-5 times a day until they began to grow. Some people cover the cups with plastic bags to retain moisture, but I was afraid of damp-off in our hot and humid climate. Once the seedlings were growing, I added half-strength Schultz's Expert Plant Food as per directions on the jar to the water in the roasting pan. It is surprising how fast these seedlings develop long roots. I prefer planting them in the styrofoam cups to give the roots plenty of room to develop. The only trouble is these cups are less stable and can fall over easily. The plastic cups don't tip over so easily. How long have the seeds been in the refrigerator? If six weeks, you can move them (still in water) into a dark closet. They will sprout much faster -- you should see most of them sprouted within a week. I kept those that still had not sprouted in the closet, and gradually almost all of them sprouted. We transplanted all our seedlings several weeks ago .... over 250 of them. They all are growing rapidly now, even without rain. There are numerous ways to start daylily seeds, and I'm sure others will share their methods with you, too. Good luck! Nancy

That's great! I have one that I planted out last fall, and it's just started sprouting leaves. Meanwhile, I have a huge one I'm about to cut back to near nothing and move.

I don't know what happened to the message I posted here on this thread - I guess that was the day GW left me and all my stuff out in the cold!
Anyways, your plummie stick probably has roots. The day I mailed yours to you, I put mine in a row in a secluded, mulched area where they could lean on the back of a sign. I wanted to experiment and see if they really need all the care and devotion I've read about.
So the day you posted this, I went out and pulled a couple out of the mulch. Even though their ends weren't really in the soil, there were some nice white roots on them. So I potted them up in Miracle Grow.
Then today I noticed all the new leaves on the still-mulched ones, and -by golly! - the one on the end has an inflo. So I snapped a pic for ya..I hope you can see it right in the midst of the knot in the wood on the left.

I am in the process of planting stuff and I need to decide a home for my plummie. Yours are looking great!

The heliconia and canas you sent are also doing well, in fact everything is. I'll take some pix soon.

I love plumies and started a few from seed 3 years ago. I think this year I'm going to get my first flowers from them! I've been watching and watching and I'm pretty sure one has an inflo.

Sometimes I'm not a good mommy such is the case with my plumerias. The evening of our last really cold blast I went over to our other house (now being rented) and dug/pulled a couple of plummies out of the ground and tossed them in our garage. A few weeks later I tossed them in the banana bed. It was rough out there since the nanners didn't have leaves at first. About two weeks ago I finally planted them. One had started growing roots and leaves even though it had been laying on the ground! They HAVE to be tough around me!

Jan-congrats on your new leaves. When you are a gardener growing things is a constant source of amazement.

Thank you! I spent most of the weekend in the garden and I have been so happy putting all of my new babies in various places around the yard. I had a couple years of almost no gardening and boy oh boy have I missed it... I am a woman on a mission now... watch out! LOL!

I haven't decided where my Plummie is going yet but I will in the next couple of days. It sounds like they will take a bit of abuse which is a plus in my book too.
