Perfect Poms

After 3 seasons of my Vietnam Pom dropping all it's flowers and fruitletts, my shrub is finally holding fruit. I have 9 beautifully shaped Poms and now the shrub is putting out more blooms. YAY! I am so excited. Thank you again Lisa!

My MIL gave me a wonderful a few years back for my birthday, it was a decent sized tree when I got it, I put it into a big nursery container (like 2 ft of more in diameter). When the temps dropped, I carried it into the Greenhouse the first year and then after that, it got left out and was fine, each year it puts out a few more fruit. Last year I think I had 6 total, The tree is now probably 8 ft tall at least...This year it was a little slow to leaf out and I was worried maybe something had happened to it.. The bad news, I'm the worst procrastinator on the planet and it got left in the big black pot, and grew into the ground...so it's impossible to move now short of excavating it...so I hope that it's ok indefinitely, (open to any thoughts on that topic). I also rooted about a dozen or so cuttings from a 50 year old tree in my MIL's neighbors yard, that was a few years ago too, before MIL gave me the tree...I have 4 small trees growing well. they are only about a foot tall. I repotted them recently into bigger containers. I don't know the variety of the tree but it has proven to be productive and thrives here in Ga. I may put the 4 I have in the ground, and I plan to get more cuttings soon and start again.

Annie, I'd like to hear about that Montreal garden too. Ann, it sounds like you are right about it being R. bruonii. It was definitely huge, and no blooms at all that day. Thanks for the info! Malmaison, I was surprised at how much I liked MAM, they had several specimens and they all looked great to me. One of the happiest looking plants in the garden, and a very shapely bush habit. Bon Silene was as big as an ornamental tree. It was a huge plant, perhaps the biggest tea rose I've ever seen. Nur Mahal was grown as a free-standing shrub. The plant was wider than tall, with an open habit and arching canes. I thought of a fountain when I looked at it. It is not a huge plant, and will fit nicely in my garden. Just guessing, I'd say maybe 4 ft tall and perhaps 5 ft wide. I was like a deer caught in the headlights will all these old roses around me, I'm afraid I didn't sample the fragrance on this one. A guy walking around alone in a giant rose garden in Texas could get beat up for looking like he's TOO interested, so I didn't go out of my way to stick my nose into too many blooms :-) In the book, 'The Organic Rose Garden', Liz Druitt raves about this rose's scent. MadGallica, thank you for the info on brunonii ... I am sure you are right. A person could have crawled up under it and been hidden from view it was so mushroom-like and massive. In the step garden area, I think the designer was going for a "knock-your-socks-off" view as you enter the garden from above. That would explain why they had so much of one variety in that area. It is definitely impressive from that vantage point. Valerie, I felt really fortunate to have seen that many old roses in one day at one garden. It says volumes for the city of Fort Worth to offer something like this free to their citizens. Randy

I found the tax shelter in this posting when searching for a gift for my brother. He is a tax preparer and has everything. So I just had to share what I did for him. I took one of those woodcraft houses from Walmart- removed the two screws from the base. I cut a 1" block of wood that fit into the bottom of the house. I glued this block onto the base thus allowing the top of the house to be easily lifted off the base. I cut a 1/2" groove in the center of the block with the table saw so I could set a card of thumb tacks into it. This was hidden in the house until the top was lifted off. I wrote a poem for this & read it to him while my daughter did a Vanna White presentation of the house. Everyone got a good laugh out of this and I finally did a complete craft project! It's been a while. Hope you have as much fun with this as we did. Here's the poem: I drew your name for Christmas It's an honor, don't you know To get my brothers name for Christmas Ah! ashopping I will go. But then I started frettin After searching high and low Whatever will I get 'im (Twas wrong to worry so!) I went into an office shop Maybe something for your desk? I talked to the clerk a lot She tried to aid me in my quest. He could use a tax shelter Is what the lady said It seemed a bit off-kelter But there was nothing left instead. So here's your little shelter All painted so very nice The foundation has been mended The roofs' been polished thrice. The flowers are all blooming In the big pot by the door The bumblebees are buzzing And there's no sawdust on the floor. It seems to be the perfect place I do agree she's right It sure beats a plain old case And your tacks! They're finally safe at night!

my hubby has no problem going to the store for 'pom poms' (I have decided that this is one of my favorite miswordings from kids right now ;-)) or talking about anything female relating to me.... However, when it comes to his kids .. boy or girl there is a gigantic block followed by panic... We have talked over and over again about what is perfectly natural for kids but still... he has heart palpitations at the mere thought...I on the other hand have vowed to make sex as open as possible with the kids especially my girls... so when they do decide to have sex they can come to me and we can take the necessary steps to make sure they are protected... I refuse to be naive enough or stubborn enough to insist on no sex before marriage ... that being said I dont really care how bm feels or hubby feels ... if they come to me or I feel they need some advice I will talk to them... with or without approval.. simply because ignorance is not bliss it is dangerous and I personally feel the less it is a hidden mysterious thing the less likely it is that they will feel the need to sneak around and experiance it far before they are ready. And, ever since I was tutoring kids in elem school and I realized what second third and on up age children were talking about (and this was almost 6 years ago) I knew I would not hide one thing from my kids regarding sex...

Yowza! That IS a Perfect Pom! Your gal looks so happy and healthy.

Now comes the agony of waiting for them to ripen.

Anticipation, anticipa-a-a-a-tion......

They are terrific sprinkled over a fruit salad, such as one with Mangoes, Strawberries, Pineapple. Or, my favorite way of enjoying Poms is to halve a small, ripe Papaya, fill with cottage cheese, load on the Pomegranate fruitlets, and gobble down with a big spoon. So good it should be against the law!!

I like eating them as is. You get a mouthful of juicy sweet fruit along with crunchy nuts in one bite.

Lisa-I am tickled they are looking unblemished, too. I have not used the copper spray as they seem to be perfect. Should I use it anyway just as a precaution against black spots?

Ok I inherited a tree in a pot a while ago. It has one fruit but seems larger than yours.Does that mean it is not dwarf? Will it do well near my natural pond?

Now as Lisa said, comes the long wait for them to ripen.

Are you all growing these in pots or in the ground?
If pots, what size?
Mine's a small shrub in a 7 gal pot.
Seeming to enjoy the heat.
Still waiting for 2 red fruits to split open so I know they're ripe. Lots of flowers right now.

goldenpond - this is my first pom so I can't answer that for you. I do know there are a number of different varieties and your fruit may be riper than mine so it's larger.

treefrog, mine is in the ground and it seems to like the location there.

I haven't had a pom since high school (please don't ask how long ago that was!). I'm going to look for one tomorrow at Lychee Tree.

marion, this is one of my favorite childhood treats. My Dad would buy one for me every Thanksgiving and Every Christmas. When I found out they could grow here I went nuts. I actually was 'talking' to my Dad as I planted the tree Lisa gave me. "See Dad??? Now I can have love apples all the time!!"
