Butterfly, Herbs & Native Plant Fair - USF

Hey all,

Not sure if you were aware of this one... I just heard about it today. The USF botanical gardens in Tampa are doing a butterfly/herb/native plant sale this coming weekend, June 9 and 10. Sounds great, I hope to be there one of those days.

yay herbs and natives :) and butterflies, what the heck :)

I have had one heck of a week, so I couldn't reply before now. I had a blast, too. We are members so we got in at 9:30. Needless to say, I made a beeline for the lady that had the $6.00 roses last fall. They were !!$5.00 this time. I got four: Gardenia, Rubens, Natchitoches Noisette (nack-a-teesch) and Variegata di Bologna. At that price, I just grabbed anything I didn't already have. Lol. All are listed as strongly fragrant which is a must with me. Unfortunately, two are monsters and two are only once bloomers. My strategy is to wait until I get a bloom, then decide if I shall keep it, where it shall go in the ground or should it go back to the ghetto til I decide later. This can be done at THAT price. However, having spent 6 months over at the Antique Roses Forum and learning a great deal, I have come to the conclusion that I must purchase those on my top ten list NOW! So I have been online ordering and have 6 must-haves on the way. While there I also got a fireball brom (thanks to some pics from this forum), a taller brom with speckled pink straps and another tropical hibiscus for my collection, Acadian Spring. Because we got there so early, I was able to pick out the broms that had pups. One had two! Love the sale and now I get to go back to the May Orchid and Roses Frenzy, (ahem...I mean sale....) CocoaBeachLorax, I feel your pain. On the coast here in West Palm Beach and we are in the worst drought since 1971. Nary a drop. I knew this was the wrong time to start up gardening again. If we can just hold on a few more weeks, it usually starts to rain around the end of June. Man, this is murder. (I'm a native, btw.) Julie in West Palm Beach

The other problem was, sensory overload!!!! I kept reminding myself to look for Veronica's visor with silk roses, but OMG there were so many plants to look at! I left, coincidentally, the USF Plant Store (they had the absolute best deals) at 11:30. My intent is to hit USF first next time. Bad Bill was done at 11:30. He had a spiral (wicked) broken leg a few years ago, and the screws and hardware were giving him a time. Re Paw Paw, my brother in Michigan has plenty of Paw Paw Trees on his 15 acres. He lives relatively close to the city of Paw Paw, MI, btw. I didn't realize Paw Paws were heat tolerant. Do you GW'ers want cuttings or fruit from those trees? Those trees must be dormant now, with the cold and short daylight sun. So sorry I missed hooking up with you GW folks, it would have been nice to meet you!

If my time is not diverted signing papers for a contract to buy a house I will be there in the morning. I'll be carrying a big sign that say "howdy! I'm from the Florida Gardening Forum!" hehe...NOT!

I was there this morning...

Tons of butterfly material, and a fairly good selection of herbs, but not so much in the way of native plants.

Of course, there's lots of stuff that I wanted, but I really tried to focus on the things which will serve a direct purpose in my garden... I ended up with a Stevia plant and a native Acacia tree.
The Stevia was a good find because now I can have a homegrown healthy sugar substitute. And the Acacia is just exactly what a particular arid, sun-baked section of my yard needs
I'll post some pictures when I get around to shooting the garden again.

The event is still happenin' tomorrow. Let us know how it goes, anyone else who makes it.

Hoping to get there tomorrow morning around 10. Will be wearing a butterfly shirt (as if I am the only one who will!) Just need to look for some Rue and False Nettles, maybe a purple Firespike if I can find one.

Just came back an hour or so ago - got my False Nettle from Greathouse Butterfly Farm and a small pot of Rue. Happened to also pick up 3 Buddelias - a purple, a pink, and a white. I have not had luck with them before - think I didn't have good drainage in the pot.

For those who are looking for Pipevines and Passionvines - Crowleys had both and Greathouse had the Pipevines. Tropical Pipevines, not natives.

There were a couple places with native plants - Salt and Pepper, Climbing Asters, Coralbean, etc. It was a much smaller group of vendors than I have ever seen before, even for the butterfly sale.

I got away spending only $20. I got some gaillardia and some herbs. I didn't really need anything and shouldn't have even gone! We're still fooling around trying to buy a house (offer/counter offer etc. on table since Wed.) I have tons of stuff to move already!
