I've got it made in the shade :)

After 5 years in Florida and every year saying that I wanted to create a shady reading nook to make it bearable to sit outside and not melt, I finally got moving. I spent the last 4 weekends clearing out the middle of a large clump of trees and pulling and digging up gopher apple and trimming branches so that I could walk under them. I know that it will be a lot of maintenance keeping the tree shots cleared and leaves from taking over. But this was a perfect spot and the soil was much better than my sandhill soil due to all the composted leaves.
I put down 2 layers of good quality landscape cloth for my path and topped with large pine bark nuggets. I wanted a woodland garden look. I added a resin wicker loveseat and end table. I couldn't find cushions and pillows I liked so I made my own with some gorgeous, 60's style outdoor fabric and tone on tone yellow and blue for the pillows. I'll be taking them in each night as i cant stand miildewy cushions.
So far, I've added part sun loving plants around the edges and full shade plant in the center. Little gnomes and hummingbird feeders as well as my windchimes add a little life. I need to make gnome homes and add some lighting in the trees and some path edging, maybe decorative small plates or colored bottles.
So far I am loving it. I know that it will get muggier, but it was 95 plus here this past week ans never go hotter than 80 on my loveseat.

Trees can be over the garden to at least some extent. I would definitely plant one somewhere. And if you want the benefit of it soon, one can buy big specimens - but they should be planted in spring, not early summer, and will cost a bit. There are also fast growing trees that will provide shade within 3 years, though you won't want them for long. But if you plant a slower growing nicer specimen beside it, then you have shade from the junk tree while your good one grows in. But OK, back to the shorter term. Immediate relief = awning, giant umbrella, etc, no two ways about it. Short-term - Your wires may not be that bad an idea, but even the most rampant vines (and really not sure you want those) will take two or three years to get up them (even clematis that regrow from the ground each year don't put on much overhead mass in their first year or two; perhaps you have a mature one you could move from elsewhere?). And then you have to consider that vines do put on a fair bit of weight over time, and just as they provide enough shade, they could rip your anchors out of your soffits. You can build all manner of free-standing trellises and pergolas, and a good old clematis or two would do your work for you within three years. But how much height do you need? You can only get posts that are so long. I built one that looks like a giant badminton net, used 12 foot posts and once they were sunk in far enough for stability it is only 9 feet high. If your structure is 3-dimensional you may be able to use 15-foot posts, sunk in less. Which vines to choose depends on what's hardy for you - not my forte, sorry. It's usually a good start to check your local nursery. KarinL

the trellises are made w/8 ft sections of 3/4" wood. i just put one in each corner and brought them together like a teepee. after tying them i did go back and put screws in to stabilize them in wind and rain (i have them in raised beds). it was so simple, although the whole neighborhood was wondering about the teepees in april while nothing else was in the garden. it was easy, inexpensive and very functional, although i have to go out almost everyday and tie up the loose vines, it seems like everytime i tie one up another one decides to start growing. I have cantaloupe and watermelon growing in the same bed, i dropped down four pieces of twine and attached them to the bed (you could stake them in the ground if you arent using beds)and i planted one plant at each twine/pole, so i have 8 plants in one bed. i did the same thing with my cukes and peas, but with the peas i have 16 plants. this is my first year with this system, so far so good. PEAS- 16 plants CUKES-can u believe this is only 8 plants!!! in this last picture you can see the entire trellis....

My idea for casual, completely washable curtains may be helpful. In the house we are building there will be 2 walls of windows, for a total of about 48 feet (25 feet on one wall and 23 on the other) in the living room. My plan is to use painter's canvas drop cloths as curtains. There are 2 major advantages - low cost and they are washable. With a little imagination they have some resemblance to natural linen. I will probably use white sheets for lining. I am also thinking about using u-haul furniture pads (they are made from fabric scraps and wash well) as interlining to add a layer of insulation during the winter. I've done similar things in the past and I was happy with the results. I will use curtain clips to hang them. Good luck with your curtains.

So, now that I can log in again, I'll try to post some pics, These were taken last night as the sun was going down. For about 1 hour as the sun in coming up and another as it is going down, the site is in sun.
I've still got a long way to go and as the plants mature I'll love it more. As you can see, most of my yard is sand and trees :)

I love it!

I have an area which has recently had some "man stuff" moved out of it (thank goodness). There are two large oaks and a cedar in a triangle. In front of it (about 6 feet) is one of my [pitiful] beds, one which I debated tearing out; in fact, I pulled up the border and was going to let it go, but then a ton of volunteers came up, I planted some things that needed to be in the ground, and now it seems to be reverting back to a garden again. I think I may keep it a garden and extend it back into the trees. That just means a fight with the vines (so many vines here!).

Your delphinium - I bought two, one is in morning sun in the ground, and one is in a pot in afternoon sun. The afternoon sun one is doing a lot better, so I'm going to dig up the other and put it in a similar exposure.

Do you have experience with the delphinium? Can you tell me about it? I bought the two on impulse because the colors were amazing. :)

Aharriedmom, your garden appears to be trying to tell you that it doesn't want to die without a fight. Your idea sounds awesome, a peaceful cove. You fight vines and I'll fight the gopher apple and tree shoots and maybe one day they'll give up :)
These are the first delphiniums I've grown in Florida. I grew them in Ohio but I was aways afraid they would fry down here. I'm hoping they'll make it. But like you, I fell in love with this bright blue. You'll have to keep me updated on how yours do.
Katkin, I agree...tea on weeknights and wine on weekends ;)
