Anyone grown Morning Glory Bush (tree)

Hi, Lots more questions. I inherited this bush, although I've had a difficult time I finally found info on Arizona board a little scary,,,,makes me think our humidity might be part of the reason she is sadly under performing. When she does produce the flowers are just gorgeous & I'd like to do whatever I can to help her thrive. Anyone here in Florida grown this plant & have any words of wisdom ?

Davie,

I had never heard of this plant so I looked it up. What a pretty tree. It goes by so many common names: Bush Morning Glory, Morning Glory Tree, Badoh Negro, Borrachero, Matacabra. I came across interesting information linked below. I hope it does well for you!

HI carol,
Thanks so much for the help.Right now all I have are 3 tall stalks mostly white not green with about 4-5 leaves & 2 blooms.Wondering if they simply aren't getting enough water & have them in full southern exposure. Thinking I'll try to take some cuttings I have read they need to callous for about 2-3 days before planting& wondering if I should move to a shadier location.....Its flowers are absolutely beautiful. Thanks so much for the nudge in the right direction....Davie

1. Morning glories don't like cold. Perhaps you put them out too soon. I haven't even sown mine yet. 2. As I recall, MGs like to be in the sun, but their roots shaded (accomplished by the mere fact of the plant growing.) Start another batch in a week or two, then put them outside. (Or do them 'winter sowing' style already outside in a milk-jug) Enjoy! I've got the REs in my stash to do, too.

Hello all, I grow the morning glory tree. It is not really a tree, but gets real tall about 6 -7 ft here. I have the lavender one and got a white one a couple of weeks ago. You cut them up in the fall like brugs and stick the 'sticks' in water to root over winter. Here in north FL they start to bloom in early summer. They love the full sun here. They do have hairy seeds but I just cut the stalks instead of collecting the seeds. Dee

Hmmmmm, cute little hairy things called 'bush morning glory'? I was just thinking I'd never seen a hairy MG seed, when it dawned on me: someone sent me 'lavender/pink moon vine' seeds which are strangely hairy, Ipomoea macrorhiza, aka longstemmed morning glory. Is this it, by chance?

I've never had any issues with the seed coming up. Maybe you got some old seed, don't know. If you are close to Belton the Master Gardeners have some rooted cuttings they will be selling in their spring plant sell this April. (I know because I took the cuttings and got them started before I gave them to the greenhouse.) You don't want to put this plant out till after the cold weather passes for the year. Do a little research on the plant before you put in into your beds. It likes full sun and will put on a good show, but it also attracts every bug in town. The bugs don't seem to bother the plant and I ignore them, but some of you might object to the bugs. I know the MG have a fit if you get near the greenhouse with one of the blooms. It also gets a little leggy, so you need something at the base to help it out. I have a pink Lantana planted next to it. The BMG may get up to six foot tall with the blooms at the top, but the lantana fills in the bottom and the blooms match well. I was told to cut it back by half in late July, but that is really hard to do when its blooming. I did cut it back this past year but was not really sure it much other than keep it from blooming for a week or two.

have three growing in the garden, non stop blooms just beginning, will bloom all summer. best to keep it cut back or it becomes really leggy. propagating is as easy as cutting a green, new growth and sticking in a pot!

I pinch mine back when it comes up in the late spring to encourage side shoots, if you don't do that it gets leggy.

I have both the white and the pink and am training them as trees. I have them in full sun and they get plenty of water. I use rebar to support them until they develop a trunk. I do this with all the plants I train as trees or standards. Many of the woody vines can be trained as trees. It just takes time. :o)

Thanks to all for your great advise. Only hope it's not to late as there is very little new growth (green) with which to get new starts, Will try cutting back ....but if so only thing left will be stalks which are not green. The 3 flowers & leaves are at the top of the plant, Will the stalks grow without any leaves left? Guess I'm left with not much of a choice. Meanwhile in case it doesn;t work can anyone tell me where they purchased as I haven't seen them anywhere for sale? Espec.looking for the pink.... pictures are just gorgeous !

Froze to the ground here a few times, right back up come spring....

If anyone will have seeds their willing to share I would be most appreciative. Not holding out much hope for this old girl.....looks like she's beyond repair but will keep you posted on any progress. Meanwhile, enjoy the beauty in the garden you've all worked so hard to create & have a GREAT DAY !

I got this last year in March, when I stopped at a yard sale and commented on the blooms and asked what it was. The lady kindly gave me a cutting. It's starting to do really well. I have it in a terra cotta pot and will be planting it in the ground when I have an area cleared where I want it. I want to train it as a tree.
