My Vegetables in this hot weather.

Hi all,

This ninty degree weather is not good for my vegetables. Hope the blossoms will set at this temperature.

My Black Jungle Butter Beans are full of blossoms.

I read good reports about this Steak Sandwich tomato and it has a better than average taste.

I'm trying a container of black seeded simpson lettuce in the shade. An article was on the forum recently.

Have had Butterstick zucchini several times over the past weeks. Best of all is the zucchini bread recipe from Silvia's party. My wife Dottie has given out the recipe numerous times. After anyone takes a taste they want the recipe. Dottie says it is the Brandy that makes it so good.

My Bush Porto Rico sweet potatoes. As Silvia said I will never have to buy potato slips again. Hope I can store them in my closet like she does.

Planted some bush butter beans. Have limited space in a raised bed.

Also have some other vegetables growing. Didn't get any pictures of cucumbers, assorted peppers, eggplant etc...

Wow! your garden is coming along nicely considering the hot temperatures. And you don't have to worry, the black jungle butterbeans will set no matter how hot it gets, I had mine in the hottest of the months producing well, I will plant them again after my pole beans are done.

And is so nice to hear that Dottie like the zucchini bread recipe, I like it too. I am looking every day to share some of my harvest still getting a lot of beans, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers. I have a lot of people waiting on the big tomato harvest, those I can never have too much, lol

Willy loves your trellis idea! You are a very good gardener and Dottie is a very good cook! Perfect pair!

Cheryl gave me yesterday about 10 cookbooks highlighting the vegetables that we are getting when I complain that there are not too many veggie recipes. One of them is the Art of eating well and she said that one is the basis for Italian cooking, I made the first recipe today, they don't use measures is like talking, I made the first today it only said to undercook in boiling water green beans and zucchini and then put meat sauce, or tomato sauce or just grated cheese and that is why I did.:)

Thanks Silvia. I hope the Florida speckle buttter bean will produce in this hot weather also. I was late in getting them out. Had to build a place for them. Plus I had to go out of town for a while and it set me back a few weeks.

i'd add to this list: cherry tomatoes (never too late, if you can find plants or get them started indoors), okra (mmmmmmm... okra.... spiny AND mucilaginous, as manature pointed out to me recently), yardlong beans, and sweet potatoes. check out southern exposure for all these, except sweet potatoes, which you can start from store-bought ones (just google: "starting sweet potato slips"). i have yardlong beans in my yard (just one plant right now) -- it's a beautiful plant, with great flowers and it sneers at heat and humidity. you can eat it young as a green bean, or let it go and harvest the peas (beans) to eat fresh. they are really tasty either way (but i am a bean lover).

The only thing I have found so far is to soak my hair and head down with the garden hose. I have long hair so the back of my t shirt stays wet. I have MS as well and heat makes me weak as a kitten. There are times that I have all I can do to get back into the house. I found some cooling products through the MS Society that I think might help in both counts. I am looking at the neck wraps that go down your spine a bit and the wrist wraps. I found at night that if I keep a gel pack on a towel on my bed that it helps just to put my hand and wrist on it. Also a wet face cloth. So who knows may be it would help outside too. Our pool/spa combos share equipment. We use Jandy automated systems on all our builds and reno's. I have clients that have us winterize their pool and they will extend the spa use maybe until December. Our preference is a gas fired heater. Heat pumps require lots of electric power to operate and their foot print is giant. Things to consider for winter use. Read the manufacturers warranty regarding use at certain ambient temperatures. Some say explicitly not to operate below certain temps as warranties will not cover damaged goods. We ALWAYS strongly suggest a generator in the event of a power loss during frigid temps. Equipment and piping can freeze up very quickly when temps are well below freezing. I have witnessed this and have made the expensive repairs. We use salt systems in seson but you can manually adjust chems in the spa with small amounts of liquid chlorine and other required chems after the pool is winterized. An automatic cover or a solar cover is suggested to minimize heat loss. It will cost a bundle to operate in the winter no matter what your heat source. Plus, picture yourself shoveling snow for a pathway to your pool or spa. I give this scenario to clients every time when asked about running through the winter. Some food for thought.

Luther I've got speckeled butter beans growing too. I opened one up the other day though and the beans weren't speckeled so I'm figuring they weren't ready. I'd like some of those jungle butter beans to plant sometime too

Julie, sounds like you got your speckle butter beans out early this spring. This is my first time growing the black jungle butter beans. Will let you know how they turn out.

Tina, glad you like my trellising design. All it takes is treated 2X2 post and 1X2 Horizontal supports and any color mason line for the vines to climb on. Plus a little work bolting it all together.
