How do you cope with hot weather and hot flashes

Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping the hot flashs down or making them bearable when working outside in the garden when it is hot?

Lordy, do I KNOW what that is like...this isn't meant to be funnfy but I pretty much just melt. Fans help. I have three in this computer room, two ceiling and one on a stand.

EVERY night we sleep with a fan on in the room, even in winter! I wish men had to deal with this...there surely would be a cure then!

This is a great question...I live in the hot & humid South and I love to garden too. The only thing I've done so far is just make up my mind to let the hot flashes come as they will, and I keep a dry wash cloth in my pocket to mop my face with...I wish I had a better solution, but I can't think what it could be.

My "early" garden was a bust, even with shadecloth on parts of it, though I may have waited too long before shading. I grew 4 kinds of corn, all supposed to be heat & drought tolerant & got nary an ear, but it bloomed. On the other hand, my fall garden did well & I managed to get at least some tomatoes. My winter garden is peculiar--lettuce & some greens bolting, broccoli making loose heads, etc. In January. Just enough cold weather for my cabbage to start heading finally. I have planted a couple of cool weather tomatoes in hopes they will survive, but the others stay in for now. Most of the black tomatoes will continue to produce in heat & a few others. I find myself freezing more now so I know I will have it. Last year was a sure cure for complacency!

If you are getting estrogen thru the soy - and I love the soy milk and drink it for breakfast every morning!, you also need Progesterone to keep the estrogen in balance. Natural Progesterone Cream is a really great way to help with the hot flashes! I have a good source for it by mail - much cheaper than the health food stores, but GOOD stuff. I will use it the rest of my life! Dr John Lee wrote, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" and told years ago how bad HRT was for women...now the doctors are taking women off that stuff finally! It's an excellent book and in most health food stores! $12-13 and worth every penny. Lois

I've experienced hot flashes for over 15 years, from just a few to maybe 20 a day. Besides the upper body and face suddenly heating up, there's an emotional component as well. I feel vaguely emotional -- maybe a little confused, or angry, or sad. I can now sometimes guess when a hot flash is beginning because I'll be asking myself, why am I feeling so weird? I just ride it out, and know not to make any decisions, rash moves, or impulsive statements. I think if you do some research on hot flashes, you'll be able to tell from descriptions if that is what you're getting.

Thank you everyone so much for what you do with your plants. Rina, your plants looks so happy, I really adore those aeoniums & echeverias! I like the motto SOS! I need to do that during the next downsizing. I wouldn't want to move all my plants either unless of the most severe storms (tornado warnings). Margaret, your weather sounds very comfortable, and what a typical Spring would be like in New England. I'm not usually in the super hot weather for a long time as there is AC indoors. When I'm in the pool the heat is great, just trying to avoid sunburn. I guess my plants and I have a lot in common, lol. Crenda, your tricolors remind me of past problems that I am trying to avoid, so I too feel they do best away from high humidity. It's like years of growing them and a few days of humidity turns them ugly. Maybe this is why some folks choose not to grow them.... so darn fussy. Ewwmayo, agreed on that shade cloth, love having it....what percent are you using? Mine is 30% but is doubled at the moment, when I get a chance later I will make it one layer. Pagan, too funny, I hope the mesembs are happier under that tough love...seems like it :) Mike, what is this about sitting back and enjoying the plants?!? Ha... I was just thinking the other day I don't have a chair in the gazebo, it's full of plants! I keep meaning to grab a chair and I forget. I collected rain water last night and earlier today I watered the 200+ plants. Looking around I have A LOT of repotting at least 50 to a 100! I do worry of older mixes being compact or they simply outgrew their pot. I'm going out soon and will get more potting mix. I'm sure the gazebo blocks more light than the plants could take. Western sun facing the shade cloth side, mostly jades and random succulents get the brightest area. CC/TC/Rhipsallis are further inward, they get some morning sun though on the other side. -Nancy

Wish I had the solution too. When my daytime hot flashes weren't so bad a couple years ago (as opposed to more recent night sweats), I kept homemade popsicles on hand all the time. Helped quite a bit with lowering body temp and just might be worth a try for you along with the other suggestions. During the hottest part of the day, I took a nap in the cool unfinished basement as well, and did in-house work at night.

The only thing I have found so far is to soak my hair and head down with the garden hose. I have long hair so the back of my t shirt stays wet.

I have MS as well and heat makes me weak as a kitten. There are times that I have all I can do to get back into the house. I found some cooling products through the MS Society that I think might help in both counts. I am looking at the neck wraps that go down your spine a bit and the wrist wraps. I found at night that if I keep a gel pack on a towel on my bed that it helps just to put my hand and wrist on it. Also a wet face cloth. So who knows may be it would help outside too.

I bought those things that are made out of bandanas that you freeze then wear around your neck....OH GIRLS do they ever help! You can even make your own by doing research online. My aunt made me the first neck one I ever had and they are wonderful. When you live where it is humid they work well too!

Keep a cooler handy with cold water in it. When you feel that hot flash coming on, take a long drink. I find it seems to cool me down from the inside. Taking a good phytoestrogen daily may also help cut down on the number and severity of hot flashes. Works for me.
