I've never ordered any roses in the mail, I'm interested in doing so however.

Right now we have these guys:

Bridal Pink
Angel Face
Lady of Guadalupe
John Kennedy
A yellow hybrid of some kind LOL
And a really nice red mini rose that is on the verge of going nuts with blooms!

I want to add a Don Juan somewhere as I just love the scent of them, and they are so pretty.

I am pretty much a rose novice when it comes to all the different kinds, but I hope to learn more about them. I have bought ones from fortuniana stock since I was told they do good in Florida.

Olya, I apologise for jumping ahead. I know that this is really your thread. Lol. I just couldn't contain my excitement! I solemnly promise to wait until the 2nd of each month before starting this thread up again in the future. :-)

Auntiejan, Yes Fort is a must for here except for many of the old garden roses. Also, most hybrid teas require spraying very often so that they will keep enough leaves to produce flowers. I have heard some great things about Our Lady of Guadalupe. And if that is Red Cascade that you have, watch out, it can be very invasive. Don Juan is one of the very best roses for Florida, even in a no-spray garden.

Marcia, Lisa is rebuilding her stock. The best way to order is to let her know what you want. She will then make sure she roots several of each choice and you will be offered first pick when they are ready to ship. I am very happy with her service and with the health of the roses.

Auntie Jan - I picked up a Don Juan on Fortuniana at Lowes(gasp!) on clearance. It still sits in its pot waiting for me to find him a home, but already produced several lovely fragrant blooms.
Olya - Nice pictures. You mystery rose looks a bit like Altissimo to me.

Thanks, Jeannie...I do not think ti is Altissimo though...smaller flower, more petals. The flowers on this rose are quite small, and produced in clusters

Olya, your mystery rose does look a lot like my St. David's, but mine has more white in the center, with bright yellow stamens, and doesn't bloom in clusters. Yours is really pretty, whatever it is!

I am awaiting an order from Countryside of Clementina Carbonieri (in stock now) and General Gallieni, I love their colors. I spend my free time looking at the yard and wondering where I can fit more roses.

I'm going to the Tampa Rose & Orchid show May 10 and hopefully on to the Southern Florida University rose garden nor far away. It looks like they have some nice OGR's there.

Now that I think about it, I don't think it is St David, either. Not enough white and as I remember, St David is nearly scentless. My sister, the non-rose grower has a St Davids. It is about 5 feet tall, very bushy and blooms in flushes, over and over...

That sure is one pretty rose. How is the rebloom? Such a bright red. StD's is a darkish red, though very red.

(Are you making cuttings? hint, hint...)

For the record, I have cuttings going of Prosperity, lots, Buff Beauty, two, and Duchesse de Brabant, one. I will be doing many more soon.

Don Juan is an absolutely awesome rose. I have it along a very narrow strip climbing a fence and it is flourishing.

Our lady of guadalupe is absolutely lovely.

One that I never hear anyone talk about is Princesse de Monaco. For a Hybrid Tea it makes a really healthy looking well rounded bush, the foliage is dark green and the flowers are lovely.

I have a lot less beatles this year. Maybe we are not quite in to the season, but I am hoping it is because I put out milky spore over a year ago.

Ya'll are talking a lot of OGRs and I'm not growing but 2 now: Arch Duke Charles and the Green Rose.
I put my rose energies into modern roses for the most part. Last month I finished planting my HT garden w/ only 12 bushes. I'm trying to scale down. At my Land O Lakes home I had over a hundred roses and I grew more OGRs there but still concentrated on moderns.
I also have about 30 minis in pots now.

I think Princes de Monaco has fallen out of favor because there are SO many in that color class that are as good or better P de M plus it tends to have short stems and that's a problem for me.

Here's what I planted in my (mostly) HT garden: Double delight, angel face (fl), Opulence, Memorial day, Vina russo -supposed to be a great red, cajun sunrise, Jema-a very favorite of mine, Louise Estes-color of P de M, Beloved-formally Ceasar Chavez, St. Patrick, Corina and Gemini

I think at some point(when I get settled!!!) I'll start rooting roses again. I have sources for getting cuttings of OGRs. I'll have more things to bring to swaps and I can also "take orders".

Hi, Laura! Your rose selection sounds divine. I used to grow hybrid teas, but I just got sick of the constant spraying, so switched to the OGR's. But when I did grow the modern roses, Double Delight and Angel Face were without a doubt my very favorites. Both for color and for fantastic fragrance. I also loved Grenada. Wow, what colors it had. And of course, Don Juan, as well. I had about 35 varieties at that house, and I do miss always having perfect roses for my bud vases. But I don't miss the work. You are SOOOOOOOO much younger than I, you can handle it! ;o)

When I get going on the beds in my side yard, I might find a spot here or there for a hybrid tea or two. I could use Double Delight, Angel Face, Belinda's Dream, and a Don Juan. Maybe. Just maybe.

In the meantime, I've been cleaning out my OGR bed and moving some things around. I just relocated my Archduke Charles, which is one of the prettiest roses, ever! I love that one so much!!

Off to HD for mulch!

Thonotorose, I will start a cutting for you. The rose is finally starting to grow nicely (I kept it too long in a 2 gal pot, and now it has room to spread out)
The rose reblooms, almost always has a bloom or two on it. Quite BS resistant, as I do not spray...
Oh, I smelled it today, it is fragrant!

Come to think of it I guess I love the princesse de Monaco BECAUSE it has shorter stems. It looks so pretty in the garden. I use other HT's for cutting.

Laura are there better plants that look like princesse de monaco? If so I would love to try them.

Re; Double delight. I ended up pulling it out of my rose garden because it was clashy with the other roses. But it looks great in a pot. It has been a few years though and it is starting to seem less healthy. I guess I have to trim the roots? Anyone have any advice?

Laura, since you are the modern and I am the antique, what do you know about Laguna and Papi Delbard? I find both of these swoon worthy, however, I am old enough to know to not spend the funds until I am sure they will have a chance here.

Laguna is very pretty! But I don't know anything about it nor the Papi Delbard. I know I am very weary of buying roses that are new on the market and untried in this area.

I will say that if you can find it for sale in this area it is probably ok. The grower has usually done some testing and if they find it not fit will not sell it. But be ware of mail order. It can be a real gamble.

Hi All! Loved reading through this thread and seeing pictures of your roses. I have tried mail order two times and, hate to say it, wasn't impressed. I only have two of the roses I ordered left, the others died a slow and lingering death. Of the two non-Florida grown roses left and one is on the "shovel prune" list as soon as I find a replacement for it.

I seem to remember some talk of a Rose Swap in the fall. Are we still on for this? I will have to get some cuttings going since I gave all I had started away a couple of weeks ago. I grow OGRs, especially "Bermuda Mystery" roses, so if anyone is looking for something along these lines let me know and if I have it I will try to get one started for you.

Used to see Seven Sisters a lot when I lived in Pennsylvania. It and Blaze must be the two most popular roses in Pittsburgh.

Love the rose pictures, and claferg I like the female statue among the roses. I might use a similar idea in my rose garden. I've been wanting something in mine for a while now. I planted two OGRs in February from my Gardenfest purchase. My Mrs. Smith's Parish is doing great, I'd say its almost 3 times its original size, and its roses change colors as they age. My Natchitoches Noisette looks like its bothered some by blackspot. Maybe I'll buy a couple more soon and keep in pots for the time being.

It is about a year old in my garden and doesn't get the best sun [gotta trim some more trees!] but does bloom fairly well. I have seen it's color listed as pale yellow but find it to be more cream with pink accents as the bloom ages. As with most of the "Mystery" roses it is fairly immune to BS and will take a good amount of neglect and still do reasonably well.

I should mention that all my roses are watered twice a week [unless they are newly planted then daily until established] and are pruned twice a year [early fall and late winter] and are fed a water soluble fertilizer on the "when I get to it schedule". I don't use pesticides or fungicides. I guess you can say it's "Survival of the fittest" in my rose gardens which is why I find the OGRs to be so satisfying.

I would be more than happy to share Martha's Vineyard. I didn't root any last fall as I usually do, but I have 5 plants in my yard so I have plenty of cuttings or I could get some rooted. They have a slight fragrance and they rebloom. It is a very hardy plant. Let me know how I can get them to you, as I live in the Daytona area.

Nova, your Soncy is lovely. I have often seen roses described as yellow, pink, or white, and found the colors to be different in my garden. Can't decide whether the color actually IS different in my garden, or whether what one person sees as yellow, another sees as apricot. Having been a painter all my life, I'm pretty particular about what I call colors, and if your rose is true to what Soncy should be, I know *I* wouldn't call it yellow. To me, it is definitely creamy white with pinkish or apricot highlights. VERY pretty!

Nova - Thanks for the pic of your Soncy he is handsome. I can see a golden glow behind the peach tints that Manature mentioned. Intriguing. He is going on the Fantasy Rose Garden of My Dreams List.

I got a Soncy at the Fall USF Sale. [$6.00] It has some 4+ canes now and has bloomed a three bud spray. They were very fragrant. The buds had pink guard petals and the bloom came out creamy white. As it matured, it changed to a very lovely blush.

I was under the impression that Soncy was pale yellow, so I am wondering if that is what I have. The canes are climber-like [the one I have] and the leaves remind me of my noisettes.

As I understand, it is very common for plants to be misnamed especially those that have been handed around neighbor to neighbor over the generations.

Every where I read, Soncy is listed as a yellow or pale yellow. However, I cannot find any pic except one at HelpMeFind/Roses
