My first tomato haul!

This isn't much of a haul, but I can't wait to bite into these! Doug, these are the Morgtgage Lifter that you gave me! I need to save the seeds so I could do this again in the fall.

Yes, Bonnie. The amount of time the fruit stays on the vine increases the sweetness, it also becomes softer to the touch and deeper in color. The tomato is a fruit that has seeds inside. The plant knows that the ripening seeds are close to maturity, during this time the tomato starts to color. The color intensifies as the fruit ripens. The fruit is ready to pick when you clasp it and it comes freely off of the plant. Tomatoes continue to ripen after being picked. Let a few get more strongly colored before you pick them and see if you notice a flavor difference. I think the taste will be much more palatable. I'm growing several cukes this season but the ones I've already harvested are "Green Fingers" which are picked small--about four inches long. They are AWESOME!!! zooo-weee .... utilitites marked??? ... they arent all going in that bed right there.. are they??? my blue totem ... or iseli fastigate.. at 12 years is about 15 feet tall.. and 8 feet wide.. and on the list to get slaughtered due to snow damage.. you will get some years out of it in that bed.. but it might outgrow that space ... and... whats a holly?? .. lol ... life dont get any better.. eh thx for the pix.. favor us with the planting.. when you are done.. and lets see that pagoda around the side some time .... the right word is escaping me ... ken

It would be interesting to hear of the responses that you've had. At first glance one would summize that bacterial speck is your problem but after seeing the damage on the unripe tomato I'm more inclined to think that you have a stink bug problem. Stink bugs feed in different ways. Often they will just probe a tomato to get a drink. Other times they will pump digestive juices into the fruit with one mouthpart while sucking out digested material with the other. You might have to get some expert help since neither problem is as easy to control. The catfacing and even BER go away with time.

It may grow past the damage. Or it may not. I personally would eat the fruit they produce--others may have a different opinion--but the badly damaged ones may not produce fruit or only produce a small amount, and it may be stunted. The brown spot on the tomato in the first picture looks like damage from rubbing against the cage. Such damage is no big deal unless a mold or something takes the opportunity to start rotting the fruit or it attracts the attention of a pest. EDIT: For future, maybe you can put your plants somewhere else on your property. If not, maybe you can talk to your neighbor and come to some kind of agreement or you can offer to pull his weeds by hand/hire a neighborhood kid to pull his weeds by hand or something, depending on what problem he's trying to solve.

Very nice.......the Mortgage Lifter is a great tasting tomato

Pam has been complaining of "Tomatotosis"......That's the funny/fuzzy tongue from eating too many raw tomatos :-)

There's always more seeds......

My tomatos quickly reached the top of my fence wire trellis ....what to do? I placed bamboo poles from one trellis to another and created a horizontal support for the toms....a pergola of sorts

I've been using pantyhose loops to tie the leaders to the bamboo to train the plants up and over the bamboo......with the available sunshine the fruit set is huge !
