I have a Worx GT. It's a trimmer/edger. As an trimmer it works great. I have never used a gas powered one, but I imagine it is comparable. Also you can adjust the angle of the head to get to hard to reach spots. It is not very heavy to carry either. As an edger, it is a bit weak. I need two battery charges to finish my yard and it takes me a long time to do it. I am on the corner and I HATE edging. For this reason I only edge when it looks really bad. My passion for gardening does not extend to the lawn.

My husband bought a battery string trimmer but I was the one who usually used it. It was heavy and when the battery wore out the box store where we bought it didn't sell replacements. Neither did the other box store. We'd have had to drive to the other side of the metro area (Atlanta) to buy a replacement. I now have an electric one and a verrrry long extension cord. The cord is a minor annoyance and the advantage is I can work longer at a time because it is so much lighter.

gary, fwit, i am a HUGE fan of my gas (two-stroke) ECHO trimmer... the thing weighs maybe 5 lbs, is well-designed, and has started on the third or fourth pull every time i've used it for the past four years. never done any maintenance. it's very very powerful and a real gem--it cost $200 and i wouldn't dream of buying any other. battery and cord blowers are ok, but when it comes to something as important as a trimmer, go gas. i would rather give up my mower than my echo. my two cents.

Thanks for the info. I didn't want gas as I have a very small area but still requires a 100 foot cord.
I disposed of a lawn mower so all trimming is done with an electric string. Works well except for occasional scalping and slicing the cord in two lol.

I have the B & D 18V weeder and love it. I originally bought the lopper/chain saw and was so impressed that I bought the combo weeder blower and trimmer which came with three batteries. For large jobs we use the gas powered weeder but for all the weeding around the house and trees we use the battery weeder. I bought an additional charge that charges the batteries faster. Any way for the right job it is the right tool.

I gave up power equipment altogether. I use a scythe--very different from an American "Swing Blade." It's what they used before the invention of the lawn mower and weed eater, and it can mow grass quite evenly with some practice. See link to video (it's not me in the video).

i played with bill's scythe this weekend (hah!) and it was a pleasure. i was instantly convinced that this was a practical substitute for any mechanical device. plus, the neighbors are intimidated...

When I was growing up our neighbors had a yardman who used a scythe. It was beautiful to watch. He made it look like the scythe was feather light.

LOL. I just bought a weed whacker, the manual kind, not quite a scythe but same idea. I actually love it. Much easier than I thought (the weight of it creates the momentum for the chopping) and a great way to attack a few weed clumps without having to drag around machinery, gas, batteries, etc. And not bad exercise!
I also was looking at the battery-powered weedeaters, and settled on the stick with the metal thing on the end. My six-year-old calls it a shinger (imagine the "shing" sound of sword-fighting).
Anyway, good luck to all with whatever whacking tool you choose!

My problem is my planting area consists of semi related beds and LOTS of pots Besides stacks of materials I can't bring myself to throw away. The grass is limited to somewhat defined paths the string trimmer does all the jobs but would be nice to not have a cord.

I have had a rechargeable string trimmer for a few years, and love it, it's light and quiet. I enjoy doing yard work and don't want to have to wear ear plugs while doing it. It's never lost it's charge even when used for a half hour, and being unplugged for a few days. I promised myself I would never get a leaf blower, that sweeping the edges was fine (I'm a recent transplant from the north). Soon realized there's no way to get all the oak leaves out of the gravel surrounding the house and under the A.C. Got a rechargeable one last weekend, and was amazed at how powerful and quiet it was. Chores that took an hour and still didn't look great, now take minutes. I got both at Home Depot.

Goldenpond, that is too funny! Sounds like my kind of cleaning, I should give that a try. We have a hedge trimmer and blower that run on batteries and we have 3 batteries that we use for them. They constantly need charging too. DH will fuss if I use them up before he gets to the blowing.

While we're on the subject, let me tell you about our battery B&D mower. This is one great piece of equipment. We got a rebuilt one in Ellington at a B&D resale store for about $250.00. They are $400 elsewhere.

We need new batteries soon. (The teenager unplugged it over the winter.) It holds the charge for about 30 minutes now, but when new we could mow for about 50 minutes. And that is about my limit.

It should probably not be used on such a large area. I have to mow the yard in five sections.

However, for those with small yards or little lawns, this is a great item. Not too heavy, quiet, very dependable and so easy to use. One of the testimonials at Amazondotcom has had his for 10 years with no issues. And Toro makes a rechargeable mower also.

I have seen online a rechargeable RIDER! Pricey, but no gas costs or mess.

I was so bummed out about the dead battery after 3 months. I had ordered from QVC even though the product was advertised on TV. The return policy was 30 days. This morning I thought that I would just call QVC and see what they said. Since I did not get any documentation with the product (Worx edger & blower, which I love) I did not know about the 1 yr warranty on the battery and 2 yr warranty on the units. They referred me to their website for a copy of the warranty but I could not find it. I called Worx Customer Service which QVC gave me, and they are (no questions asked), sending me another battery in 7-10 days. The instructions she gave me on recharging are entirely different from what I had read or seen on TV. The battery comes with some charge. You use it and let it run totally down, then after it has cooled down you recharge all the way up. When you have finished using the units you take the battery out. Do not store with battery intact. I had read customer reviews on a review site and it seems that 9 out of 10 people were having battery problems. A second battery is $80 and no guarantee that the same thing would not happen again. With new instructions I hope all will be well.

I got a elec. Homilite the other day, given to me. Does any one know what gage string it takes. The gas one I had I didn't want to mess with (gas/oil mix). I find that's a Man's thing!

I recently purchased a B&D 24 volt string trimmer. I have a John Deer gas trimmer but I wanted something light to do quick cleanup trimming. I like the trimmer and I recommend it; with the following caveat: battery life is short (10-20)minutes. This means that you don't use this trimmer for big jobs, unless you buy extra batteries. With that said it works just fine for me cleaning up after mowing my 9000 sq. ft. lawn.
