Extreme streptocarpus problems i need help

hi

i have a small sterptocarpus collection growing under high intestity discharge lamp

i am having problems getting the watering right

i water when the pot feels light from below:i put about 1cm of water in there and let it soak up

i have lost three of my plants this way: they go limp and die like its over watering but it cant be

can anyone help please :(

Are you sure enough water is getting to the roots? They like to be damp and dry out some between waterings. If they are totally dry and you water too much at once they could drown. If you are watering too little maybe the rootball is not absorbing water?

This forum seems slow. Maybe someone else will come along with a better suggestion. I have a lot of streps and every now and then I have trouble with one myself. If they get too potbound or too much heat, they dry out faster than I can keep up.

Tish mentioned 2 issues - potbound and too hot. Could be it.

I would add - may be the soil is too heavy?
If they are not repotted for sometime - the soil deteriorates, it is - yes Tish- potbound - and they become susceptible to rot.

You need to repot them - I would say every 6 months and you need to divide them like irises - cut out a new fresh shoot, better if with some roots - reroot it under cover - and toss the rest. And if you see one wilting - perform the "surgery" I described ASAP.

Snappy, here how I have started and grown Streps and have not lost one in over a year plus of growing and starting them from leaves. I agree with Larry, the crown should be slightly above the soil to prevent crown rot. I only water from the bottom and with a small paring knive punch 4 holes along the bottom rim of the cup for extra air flow to the roots. Give the knive a small twist to create a small hole. B This is a soil mix I have been using with great success. You will need a 12 oz solo cup to measure. You can get the ingredients at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. 6 cups perlite 4 cups Miracle-gro African Violet soil mix 3 cups vermiculite 1/8 cup activated charcoal ( used in fish tanks) pet shop mix together well and use. Wish you luck with your plant. Note: I do not use wicks with this mix. I only bottom water. In the event your plant does not survive for some reason, contact me as I usually have extras and would be willing to share so you can enjoy these beautiful plants. Audrey, a couple of questions. Is the parent leaf variegated? How much light is the leaf and babies receiving? From my observation this appears to be too little light. However, if the light is adequate you may want to give the plantlet a fertilizer with a slightly higher nitrogen fertilizer to help green the plantlets. Dave

I agree with dottiecarrano; Let the weeds be! :) I live in Eastern KY as well and completely understand how difficult it can be living backed up against a hillside. However, I have found that trying to live in harmony with the hillside tends to work much better than battling against it. Why rid the hill of its natural vegetation just to replace it with something that may or may not like it there. The weeds might not be the prettiest thing to look at, but they're definitely better than a dirt wall (which is all you will continue to have if nothing else takes to it). I mean, if you want invasive you could bring in some kudzu or something (goodness knows we have enough of that around here), but I don't think you want to do that... lol But yes, all those sprays are creating toxic runoff and, if anything, are counterproductive to what you are trying to achieve. We've got some really pretty "weeds" here in EKY; Let 'em live. :)

Repot it, add 30% perlite to the soil. When you pot it - make the plant the King of the hill - the center should be above the rim. The new growth needs a lot of air and is damaged if the soil around it is too wet - and any soil compresses with time. So it is totally a culture problem, not any kind of infection. You caught it early, so it is easily corrected. The damaged young leaves will grow out of it.. kinda.

I have been surprised, being a novice with gesneriads, that Episcias and Streptocarpus received as cuttings do extremely well in straight vermiculite. One of the Episcias has been transferred to a nutrient-less soil mix where it is doing very well. Cuttings of other gesneriads grown in nutrient-less mix have done poorly though most survived. Plants growing in the vermiculite flower freely. Yale
