The things you need are :
Good seed
Good soil
Good fertilizer
Good LUCK! LOL
Oh, and sun is important. What kind of giant plants would you like to grow? Something for a small space long gourd, sunflowers, giant cabbage? Giant veggies just... get into you :)

To see some good growers of giant veggies, you can look at the Garden Giants 2 Bigger, and Better on HGTV this month. I saw it back in the fall, a great show, I taped it and watched it over and over and over and over again lol :~)

Hello Ornata (London), My Colocasia dont get to the gigantic proportions that some people on this forum seem to achieve, (mainly in the US), Largest is probably Fontanesii and 'mammoth' that get about 4ft tall with 2ft leaves. I have ordered some potentially bigger varieties from Brians Botanicals via hiswebsite namely Colocasia 'Gigantea giant thailand strain', 'Jacks Giant' and A variety called Colocasia 'common form' which brian told me is anything but the coomon form because he reckons it grows to 10ft tall with 4ft leaves so abit of a misleading name on that one. I am not expecting these 'giant' varieties to get to the same huge sizes as they manage in the US but 6ft with 3 ft would be nice. Make sure you plant Colocasia in full hot sun with lots of high-nitrogen feed like Miracle-gro lawn feed for Maximum growth and if you have managed a 4/5ft plant with 2/3ft leaves in the garden in the UK you have done well. Ohio Buckeye - what is the best way to start growing

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but the Ohio buckeye is in my experience a messy and not very ornamental tree. I have two in the back yard, planted by the previous owner (out of state loyalty or perhaps mental defect). The pale greenish-yellow flowers are barely noticeable in spring. Leaves start developing brown patches and falling off by mid to late summer. There is no fall color to speak of. I've been thinking of cutting one of them down for several years; maybe this fall if I have the time. If you want a buckeye, I suggest another species or hybrid. Maybe the scarlet buckeye (Aesculus pavia), which at least has attractive flowers.

Thanks everyone, for your input! I think my problem has been not having fresh seed, because I've had one variety do very well and another variety not germinate at all. When I questioned the plumeria nursery that I purchased the seed from, they said that their seed was always fresh, but I have my doubts. Thanks again! By the way, I have one seedling, only about 2-3 months old, and 4 inches high, that is branching from every leaf node. There are four branches so far. Another one about the same age and height, that is also branching. Have you had this happen very often? Kevin

JD, The thickness of organic matter would depend on how deep you would like your "good soil" to be. My soil is about 1 ft of sandy tan stuff and then solid red clay under that. The compost I put down between the layers of boxes was only about 2" thick. It would have been thicker, but I was doing humongous areas and it's just me hauling all of the compost in and then putting it out, so 2" was all I was able to do. The soil that resulted was great for salvias, and lots of other perennials. For my big shrubs I dug a bigger hole and took out the sandy soil underneath the lasagna part and replaced it with compost. When I say compost I mean the compost they sell at our local wastewater plant that is human waste mixed with leaf mulch and chipped wood and then composted. It works really well, but you may not have something like that near you. On the other hand, I also did my paths with layers of boxes and mulch on top, no compost used at all. The breakdown of the boxes and all of the earthworms that come to the site gives the soil a little boost. As far as all of this dark side stuff goes... You know that commercial that says "Live and Learn and then get Loves?" Well, my version would be "live and learn ... and then get Round Up". I've got a whole back yard of flower beds that were made BEFORE I used Round Up and I need to just start over and do it again right, but that would require killing thousands of dollars worth of plants, many of them rare and not replaceable. But maybe the Roundup has stunted my garden. What do you think?

oh my god.. =: i looked at that HTV thing and skimmed through it.. that's so insane having to use a quilt for your 983791827396lb pumpkin and vacuuming ur cabbage!! pretty much everything i've tried to grow has died. i killed the worm farm i had in the 6th grade, my succulents turned red and fell apart, all my ferns shrivelled up within about a week. i think the only thing that actually grew was a carrot that seeded by accident in the middle of our lawn lol @$%#^?*!! my god.. right now, having a pumpkin grow to 2lb would be a notable achievement. what do you have to do to like first off not kill everything you touch, and then make it grow to a completely insane size? =\!!!!

the secret is you need learn how to grow normal sized vegetables first. Once learn how to do that then you might be ready to learn how to grow giants, and not before.(aka you need learn to crawl before you learn to walk).

Read and learn about how plants grow and the microscopic beings in the soil that make it possible. Start here and read every word! Because you can't grow true giants with miracle grow in sterile potting soil.
