cover crop?

I'm thinking of planting something in the veggie garden this summer, instead of just letting it go to weeds. Anyone got good ideas for cover crops that would improve the soil. I don't think rye grass would work down here. It just seems silly to let it go to Spanish needle again, knowing that I'll be fighting them in the tomato bed next winter (and everywhere else.)

Gardens Alive offers buckwheat, suggesting it's great for weed control and soil conditioning. Anyone tried that?
