Are Mockingbirds Becoming Better Neighbors?

Today I worked a few feet from a fledgling mockingbird sitting in a bush waiting for its parents to bring it food. The parents would arrive with beakfuls of insects, perch on the edge of the roof, watch me carefully for awhile, then drop down into the shrub to feed the youngster.

What's so incredible about that?

Well, mainly that I wasn't attacked, that's what!

I grew up in Florida, and I remember a time when nesting mockingbirds were absolutely psychotic. Nobody could walk anywhere in the yard without being dive-bombed. This aggravation was considered an inevitable rite of spring.

I first noticed that mockingbirds seemed to be mellowing out close to twenty years ago, and it's been getting better every year.

This year's nest, like all the nests of recent years, was built in a hedge right next to my front door. My constant comings-and-goings didn't disturb these birds in the least. I do believe I'm witnessing some sort of evolutionary step!

How are the mockingbirds behaving in your neck of the woods?
