hostas in florida.....

we grow them in pots, move them out of any irrigation in the fall, come back really nice each year. middle pot is just taking off. these are at least five years old or more in the pot....and it's only april!

I started growing hostas last year. I grew them in pots and was rewarded this year with a healthy return. Awesome plants. I am doing a test bed in my back yard that has hostas from Walmart and Lowe's in it. What I am wondering about is performance and if they just sorta disappear in Florida sand. Thank you in advance for any input. Paula =^..^=

This is pretty vague because my memory sucks, but I recently read that hostas need a certain amount of chilling in the winter and that's why they tend to not do well in Central Florida.

This spring I got a hosta that is supposed to grow in zone 9 and it is so stunning that I may grow it as an annual if it doesn't survive...

Beautiful flowers, Radha! It certainly reminds me of India when I think about the lovely frangnace of Jasmines and Crossandra. I used to have a green one (aka Pachambara)that I grew from seed, but did not make it through to the next year. My Yellow crossandra never seeded, and my orange self seeds. Not sure why? Most of the TX folks on the forum grow in pots. However, now that I am familiar with hosta, I see them everywhere. They're at the big cemetery here. I saw a stand of some kind of white edged hosta in full bloom last week. There must have been 10 or 15 mature plants. They looked great (and we've had 30+ days of 100+ temps). One of my old clients has several large blues in her front yard. One of my current clients has some kind of white edged plant that is sporting a plain green in her atrium. I saw some in a planter box next door to her. All are in the ground and doing fine. I would guess that all are in areas with automatic watering systems. I'm not sure where the line is where hosta quit thriving. I understand that fragrant hosta do better in warmer climates. It seems that way to me, but I'm not all that experienced at growing lots of varieties. bkay

Whenever I get up to Gainesville I usually see hostas in lots of landscapes. We stayed at a B & B there a few years ago and the owner had a dozen or more varieties that were just gorgeous. My guess is they are tough to keep growing in a nursery environment because of our heat and humidity.

As a point of data, I've got 4 little hostas in the ground that did have winter irrigation and they are coming back fairly well (as far as I'm concerned). Not quite as big as yours, but they were planted very small last year. 3 of the 4 look "good" and the last one looks "poor to fair". I'm impressed that they're back at all since something was eating them all last year. Anyway, winter irrigation may not be a deal breaker.
