hosta growing zones

One last question before I start getting ready for company ...

DH and I were lusting and dreaming the other day about where we might retire. Ok, it was just me, but I drug him along. Stay here? Move to the beach (his idea), move out of the city (my idea), move to Florida (his idea). I told him we couldn't move to Florida because hostas don't grow there. He seemed dubious. Really? Hostas are boycotting Florida?

Which brings me to my question. I have this vague impression that hostas need at least a cool winter. Then I realized ... wait ... there are people on the hosta forum who live in TX. When we moved from TX to NC, I hadn't worn a coat in so long I couldn't even remember if I even OWNED one.

So enlighten me ... is my vague impression that hostas don't grow below a certain zone correct?
