Thursday July 29 - Just a few pictures before the rain

It is supposed to rain all day with occasional thunder showers there will only be a few pictures.

Elegance of Summer (Valente) - This is an awesome yellow. It is tall and has a large bloom. The plant is extremely hardy making huge fans. I recommend this one to anyone in the North.

Heavenly Angel Ice (Gossard) This is my favourite daylily.

Victorian Lace (Stamile) This one doesn't increase well in the North and the budcount is fairly low but the blooms are awesome. One of my goes as a backyard hybridizer is to put this bloom on a vigorous plant with a moderate budcount.

Voluptuous Beauty (Benz) This one is new but I think I am going to like it. The soft pink is one of the nicer shades in my garden. The wide petals are appealing too.

I realized I needed a picture of the final bloom on Mary's Baby so I braved the rain for a few more pictures.

Belle of Ashwood (Norris) This is one of my favourites this year. It is really coming into its own.

Elusive Happiness (Rice) This one is relatively new but it seems to be a good all around daylily. It has the best scape on one of my pink daylilies with a 25 budcount.

Mary's baby (Norris) I am looking forward to seeing a mature clump of this one. The colours can be absolutely vivid.

Belle of Ashwood is lovely, and I like your new one, Voluptuous Beauty. Mary's Baby is a favorite of mine because of the lush color and texture, but Heavenly Angel Ice!!!Ah that's a real winner.

Jumping into July with just a few blooms

Rita, Jean and Celeste - I'm unable to tolerate bright sun very well in recent years. I think it has to do with the allergy medicine I take. Anyway by 9-9:30 the sunlight becomes way too intense for me. So I really need to get out as early as possible to photograph, water, and do any garden chores that need doing. It takes me about 2.5 hours to water what I can reach with the hose. Two gardens are too far from the hose and very parched right now. North Wind Dancer is in one of those, and it only has five buds per scape and extremely small blooms this time. Maryl - Glad the city has fixed the water pump. Plants in pots really need watering every day in hot weather. One of the reasons I got Skullduggery was because I liked the name so much. Of course, I liked the way it looked too. Nat - When daylilies go summer dormant, they completely disappear. They lose all their leaves just like in winter. When a good rain comes, they'll leaf back out again. The first time this happened, several years ago, I thought they had died. The Turn of the Century hibiscus is a hardy one that usually has blooms as big as dinner plates. With so little rain this year, the blooms are only 5-6 inches in diameter. Royal Jester just started blooming yesterday. I'll probably be posting photos of it later this week. Mantis, there is some debate whether the pod or pollen parent controls certain attributes. Bob and I don't think think it makes a difference which is the pod/pollen parent. We don't see how that can happen when both sets of parents are contributing the same amount of genetic material. I suppose it might seem that way sometimes since tetraploid daylilies have four sets of chromosomes so who knows what is lurking in the DNA. Nancy

OMG! Those all look scrumptious! I just added Fearfully and Wonderfully Made last season . Hasn't bloomed yet but now I know what I have to maybe look forward to. Holy Sombrero and Ruffled Strawberry Parfait X Sonoran Desert Rose are my choices out of this posting . I can't imagine what a whole row of this cross will look like ......wow! Please make sure to post pics of those so we can all drool .

Elusive Happiness looks especially great kissed with the raindrops, great shot. I am not familiar with Elegance of Summer but I like the looks of it, very pretty.

I got Elegance of Summer in Nova Scotia, from Peggy-Anne Pineau. Voluptuous Beauty came right from John Benz in Ohio.

Joan Derifield is a very slow grower for me.

Lovely, lovely blooms! I don't usually care too much for yellows, but that first one calls to me. I like the color on Elusive Happiness & Belle of Ashwood.

You have some beauties there--especially the 3 lovely pinks. I think I'll have to look into Elusive Happiness with that great bud count. I envy you getting rain. It was nearby but skipped us once again.
