Those look great. I agree, these super hot temps have been hard on most everything in my garden. I watered this morning first thing, when it was "only" 82 or so. Some of my newly planted daylilies (just put in two weeks ago) are having a rough time, except for Palo Duro Canyon, which has a scape coming up!

DEBRA, meant to ask, in this very hot weather, you don't think it hurts the daylilies to water them of the mornings? I didnt water mine a couple nights ago,and planned to water the next morning, but, I didn't do that either.I figured it would burn them up to water them in the early morning, then the sun comes up and the ground being wet would surely cook them,so I was afraid to water that morning, too. Watered them good last night.I have yellow leaves on all of mine thats planted in the gtound. The potted one,not very many yellow leaves.

I watered some this morning too. I had noticed the yellowing leaves and the buds being smaller...no sunburn yet.

Claudine's Charm is gorgeous and I always love seeing clumps. Skullduggery reminds me of Philistine Champion.

Anna - It's sad to see so much heat damage. I had the greatest number of rebloom scapes ever (63 cultivars), but I think a lot of those won't be able to rebloom because they will suffer too much bud drop. I've already had two daylilies go dormant as a survival mechanism against the heat. Good luck to you on the newly planted ones, and I hope you will get to see Palo Duro Canyon bloom.

Jean - Supposedly it's best to water in the early morning as opposed to the evening when it's excessively hot like this. In the evening, the soil temperature is higher and makes conditions more likely for cooking the plants or promoting disease. And I'm talking EARLY morning watering - between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m.

Kay - The yellowing leaves are primarily on the daylilies that get all-day sun. The ones that get a little bit of afternoon shade seem fine.

The blooms looks great as usual but you were size to spend your time watering as they must need the water in that heat. I have to go with CLAUDINE'S CHARM for favorite today. Really pretty!

OH GEE there is no way,I am going to go out to water at 5;30 in the mornning, at leat I dont think so.B UT, I am out there at 7 most mornings.Would you believe I get up and go out there that early to see if WONDER OF IT ALL has a new bloom on it that day. I do love this daylily.but some days its not all the way open yet and needs a couple more hours.Thank you for answering my question.It does make sense to me, b ut, I thought it was best to water in late evening as the sun is down then and cooling off(suposely anyway) aint been cooling off lately.ok,I will be gwetting up earlier and doing morning watering :)) Thank you.

Don't tell me early morning for watering-eek. Mine will have to survive with afternoon/evening watering or they are goners. Not a morning person at all! At least they get watered. It was nip and tuck last night with the city restricting water until they fixed the pump. Since most of mine are in pots it sure opens your eyes to how vulnerable you are if the water stops.....Gosh, there's not a bad one in your group Debra. I've got Bela Lugosi on my fall list and thanks to your picture I've underlined it. Green Mystique is one of my personal favorites and I think everyone should grow it. Skullduggery has a neat name and love the color combination. All in all pretty nice considering the weather.......Maryl

Oh, that's sad about the heat effect on dls, especially the seedpods. Well I don't pollinate, but I think seeing that would be quite frustrating.
What does 'go dormant' look like, I am curious.
And as for blooms, Claudine's Charm is my favorite! It hasn't bloomed since you got it or it took two years off?
I also love Green Mystique and Wonder of It All. Skullduggery is quite dramatic and an interesting form.
Hibiscus is lovely, is it one of those huge ones?

I'm so sorry to hear about the heat-related problems you are experiencing. It's been hot and dry here but not like what you & others are going through. It takes me over 4 hours to water all my gardens so I can only manage it once or twice a week. Too many roses to deadhead, weeds to pull, and japanese beetles to pick off and drown in soapy water. I am way over my head with garden chores and it's too hot during the day to do anything. I don't know how people do it who live where its perpetually hot. Anyway,
these all are beautiful and I wouldn't know by looking at them that it's been unbearably hot. My favorite picture is the clump of 'Fly So Free'. BTW, Northern Fancy has 6 scapes coming along and I am awaiting those blooms with much anticipation! We will see how it likes New Hampshire but it looks very happy so far.

Green Mystique is so heavily fringed, with lots of little tendrils. Do these always open so well? I believe you said once that GM is a slow increaser. Interesting info on Claudine's Charm. I'm afraid I can do without a plant that takes two years off.

Rita, Jean and Celeste - I'm unable to tolerate bright sun very well in recent years. I think it has to do with the allergy medicine I take. Anyway by 9-9:30 the sunlight becomes way too intense for me. So I really need to get out as early as possible to photograph, water, and do any garden chores that need doing. It takes me about 2.5 hours to water what I can reach with the hose. Two gardens are too far from the hose and very parched right now. North Wind Dancer is in one of those, and it only has five buds per scape and extremely small blooms this time.

Maryl - Glad the city has fixed the water pump. Plants in pots really need watering every day in hot weather. One of the reasons I got Skullduggery was because I liked the name so much. Of course, I liked the way it looked too.

Nat - When daylilies go summer dormant, they completely disappear. They lose all their leaves just like in winter. When a good rain comes, they'll leaf back out again. The first time this happened, several years ago, I thought they had died. The Turn of the Century hibiscus is a hardy one that usually has blooms as big as dinner plates. With so little rain this year, the blooms are only 5-6 inches in diameter. Royal Jester just started blooming yesterday. I'll probably be posting photos of it later this week. It's a late morning opener, and those tend not to be photographed as much.

Mantis and Nat - Claudine's Charm bloomed just fine the first year I got it. Then, over that winter it nearly died in a pot. Last year, still in a pot, it limped along with wimpy foliage. This year, still in a pot, it finally put up a scape again. I think if I had planted it in the ground initially, it would have been fine. I have too many plants and not enough garden space.

Mantis - Green Mystique always opens well and never gets hung up on its edge. When I grew it in a pot for three years, it fluctuated between two and three fans. The year after I planted it in an optimum garden space, it went to seven fans. Now the clump has 11-12 fans. So it is multiplying well now. I know others who have always had it in the ground said it multiplied slowly for them. It may be one that takes a couple of years to settle in and multiply.

When I went outside at 8 p.m. it was still 100 degrees. This is the worst the daylily blooms have looked so far, even though this was not the hottest day we've had recently. My lawn looks like someone sprayed Roundup on it.

Mine are nearly gone too Debra. I have a few re-bloom scapes coming on but they won't amount to much since it's so dry.. Claudine's Charm is my favorite.. I think I am going to toss Magic Amethyst. I can't get a decent bloom on her and if I do, it's at the end of her bloom time so I feel she's pretty much a waste. Ellie

Ellie - I'm sorry to hear Magic Amethyst does so poorly for you. Mine usually does well, but this time it doesn't have many buds. My daylilies have started to go dormant even with buds on them. North Wind Dancer, which had a few buds left on each of three scapes had vanished today. The scapes were on the ground and the fans were gone. I knew this one was struggling because of lack of water, but the plant was still there yesterday morning. This is another day of 100 degrees. Seed pods are drying up left and right, and went ahead an broke a lot off this morning on plants that were clearly distressed. If I don't, there won't be any blooms on them next year.
