A few for a Thursday

We didn't get much photograhy done today. We had strong storms starting yesterday about 4 pm and torrential rains. Some places in our area had hail, but I don't think we did. (I was not at home when the storm started.) We lost power and were without it for about 24 hours. Finally, when the house was getting really stuffy and warm, it came on about 5 this evening. These are the few pictures I got today and yesterday.

Gay Activist has just started blooming in our garden.

Jurassic Pink just started to bloom.

Bob doesn't like Raspberry Butterflies and wants to get rid of it. I kind of like it.

A couple of seedlings to round out the pictures today. This is Chomp X Mitch Lynd showing some serious teeth. Unfortunately, it looks like the scapes are short and the flowers are on the small side.

I know I have posted this one before, but I really like it. The tag says Forestlake Laura Lee Harding X Bass Gibson, but I don't see how that can be. This is a large flower on a tall scape.

I'm not sure if the color on Serena Dark Horse X Baracuda Bay is good enough for introduction. It is a tall, well-budded plant though.

Why is it that the best flowers are on short puny plants, but the tall vigorous plants have so-so flowers?

I don't hybridize, so this is probably an elementary question. Is the pod parent more likely to determine the plant habit (height, for example)? I like the color on Gay Activist. It's always interesting to see Hanson's newer cultivars in pictures other than those provided by the hybridizer. Sometimes, the catalog pictures are quite different.

Mantis, there is some debate whether the pod or pollen parent controls certain attributes. Bob and I don't think think it makes a difference which is the pod/pollen parent. We don't see how that can happen when both sets of parents are contributing the same amount of genetic material. I suppose it might seem that way sometimes since tetraploid daylilies have four sets of chromosomes so who knows what is lurking in the DNA.

Maryl - I wonder why Linda Beck doesn't perform for you. You certainly have the heat she loves. Hoochie Coochie Man does glow in the sunlight. It was my favorite red for a couple of years. This is a replacement plant. I lost the original in a pot two winters ago. HCM keep its color all day in 92 degree heat with a heat index of 97 and lots of humidity. A lot of Kirchhoff's newer reds have HCM in the background. Debra

Mantis, the seedling is not as tall as Cherokee Pass but is much more vigorous than Adorable Tiger. It makes a nice display in a clump but I am just not sure if bud count is good enough for introduction. And so far, we have not observed any rebloom. Tempest in a Tutu was just planted this spring so I expect it to get better when established. Cajun Dreaming has overwintered once. It hasn't increased much (if at all) since last year but I don't think we gave it a fair chance. We let the new bed get covered by weeds and then the bed was attacked by voles (they ate a large number of the small plants--went right down the row). The fact that it bloomed at all this year is probably amazing. We are just growing too many varieties and can't take care of them all. Can't wait for Bob to retire.

Ruth, I thought that was Clown Parade. I have noticed that when it gets really hot it is sometimes lighter....If you can get it early in the day, not so much but if later, it is usually noticeable. But mine are usually almost through or on re-bloom by the time that happens.

Jurassic Pink is pretty! How large is it? The first toothy seedling is amazing. Maybe the flowers will be larger and the scapes taller in future years. The second purple is pretty too. Maybe a bee pollianted FL Laura before you got to it.

I agree that Jurassic Pink is very pretty and I like the color of your seedlings, especially the first two. I don't grow many toothy ones but have admired yours.

Don't know how I missed this post, but Jurassic Pink is lovely. I remember you had a greenhouse shot of it last year (?) and I've been waiting to see what you think of it. Nice form and color in your picture......Your second seedling with the intense ruffling is a good one. Or is that not ruffling? I like it regardless........Maryl

Jurassic Pink is now taking its chances outside in the garden. It's a nice height unlike other southern-bred ones that don't get to their full height. I'd guess the flower is about 6 inches. Last winter was a mild one so the jury's still out on hardiness.
