First time poster, long time lurker.

I've had these before - they smell really bad. I would dig them up as I found them. You can actually follow the root (it's fragile so be careful or you may lose it) but then you can find the others before they pop up. We had a few right by the front door and it was horrible every time you walked in the door.

Oh,stinkhorns are horrible! I have the orange ones. I think they came in with some mulch I put down last year. You need to dig around the stinkhorn and find the underground tuber. Use a plastic bag or disposable gloves to remove all the bits of the tubers. According to our extention service, there is nothing you can do to prevent it. You can spray the area with a fungicide, but it probably won't do anything for the stinkhorn. Just keep up with removing them. You will be able to smell them before you can see them. They are really driving me crazy.

I've had problems last year and into this year with both stinkhorns and the dog vomit kind. Like others recommend, the key is to dig them up before they bloom and spread the spores elsewhere in the yard.

They look like clusters of rubbery, round eggs before they open up and bloom.

I'm wondering if it's part of the natural decomposition process. I never had this problem until I started using the newspaper 'lasagna' method. I find the stinkhorn eggs/bulbs (whatever they are...) under the mulch and rooted on the decomposing newspaper layers.
