aageery "Are your Stropharia in full sun? Are you the Greg with kiwis and persimmons?" Yes that is me. At the moment I don't have a Stropharia patch, I had them under my artichokes but I am moving that bed. I plan on getting another patch going under my grapes or blackberries. They are happy filling in the shady areas under plants where nothing else will grow. The wood chips that they eat are a good mulch and the mushrooms help the plants by breaking down the nutrients in the wood so the plants can utilize it. Ang H "Can anyone tell me what kind of mushrooms these are? " I am no expert when it comes to mushroom identification. There are a handful of beginner level mushrooms that I will collect for myself. I have learned the proper way to identify them and there aren't any looks a likes to get it wrong. It just so happens that these mushrooms are also the best tasting and most sought after so I don't feel the need to learn a lot about the other ones. If you want to start foraging for mushrooms you need to have a mentor that can teach you what to look for. I would recommend contacting the mushroom society of Utah. I'm not altogether sure that is a Morel, a look a like possibly. Mushrooms grow where conditions favor their growth, soils with high levels of organic matter that are fairly moist and most often I have found them growing in a stand of hardwood trees, seldom in a garden. If it were a Morel mushroom I would say it was a great thing but this one I would call neutral.
