what to do for the second season for my rasied beds
Comments (9)Hi Angela! I'm in the same boat. I planted a spring, summer and fall crop in my beds since filling them with good "veggie mix" soil a year ago. In between those seasons, I've added some sporadic bags of steer and chicken manure, but nothing really significant. My existing soil has now settled by a good three inches. What I've done is called back the company where I got my soil and ordered a couple yards of their organic compost. Because they're the same supplier of my soil, I was able to consult with them on the right mix they suggest for this point in time. The truck will be dumping it tomorrow (am I a nerd to admit I'm really excited about that?). I'll be loading it on top of my beds, then probably using a shovel to lightly turn it in. Most of the people I know who garden, be it in the ground or in beds, do the same. Every spring, they add in compost in some serious proportions before starting off their summer crops. I'm up in Sonoma County so I've got a few suppliers of good organic compost to choose from. I'm not sure what's available in the East Bay, though. Here is a link that might be useful: my blog...See MoreA second year seedling in evaluation bed
Comments (7)This has always been an interesting topic to me. Scape height is very hard to evaluate here at least in my particular situation. I have over 300 registered CV's here. I went out and measured a bunch of them at random a few minutes after I read your post and the bulk of them are not showing scape height any where near what you see on the AHS registry. Linda Beck averages 20" here. Warrior Victorious is 23". Orchid Gilded Ruffles is true to the AHS description of 18" but one of the few that comes up to the registered specs. Red Friday is 21" here. My lilies are atleast 2 years of age and most are between 3 and 7 years of age. They are fertilized and well maintained yet I almost never see the scape height that is stated in the registry. The only exception I see to this are the daylilies hybridized by Jamie Gossard, and some of Karol Emmerich's. When anyone wants to see Jamie's plants I just tell them to look for the ones on the flag poles....those will almost always be Jamie's plants. Maybe you should send some of that lily to a southern living friend and see what the scape height goes to in the next growing season. You might be surprised. Comments (7)Very pretty! Make sure when you water, water the entire area (not just the hostas) all the way out to the Maples' dripline so those nasty roots don't have to seek water where your plants are. I agree with the others, you are still crowded in the original bed. You need to either make more beds or extend the others. Remember, hostas can take some sun if that is an issue for you. It is quite obvious to me from the looks of your photos that you are quite GOOD at growing hostas. They're in BEAUTIFUL shape! Grass is overrated - Go forth and dig some more! ;o) Char...See MoreNew camera..new photos! A year into my white kitchen.
Comments (73)aokat: it is some hand woven rug from a local store, I don't know if it is a "brand" or something, sorry. phyl: it is Rosemary Sprig from BM. The tiles are from Pewabic Pottery in Detroit. They are from the "stratton collection" and come in that size which is 3x3 and they are just fixed regularly with grout. I custom ordered the tiles from them, they have a choice of about 10 or 12 standard colors to pick from....See MoreRelated Professionals
