Leonardo Da Vinci....

....might be a good name for this one. During the Northern Mecca this one created quite a stir. The longer I look at it the more interesting it becomes. (like one of his paintings)..what do you think? Bob {{gwi:835100}}

VERY UNUSUAL! On my monitor the petals fall in the orangeish range but the eye is a lavendar with a yellowish throat. If those are the colors on this bloom, I think you have a winner. I can't ever remember seeing that type color combo on another daylily. Dip I assume?

You need to have some of these converted so you can retire!

I dont have Leonardo, but from what I saw at the rose nursery where they've displayed lots of roses in the ground, it seems to have a busy, shrubby shape. It had lots of medium pink flowers which didn't seem much affected by the sun. It was planted next to falstaff, which seems to be much taller whereas Leonardo seems to grow wide and bushy and not quite as tall as Falstaff. The flowers aren't as big but they do have the lovely old fashioned shape. It had Bonica on the other side and they seem to grow similarly, though the Bonicas were much lower in height. Comment 9B, Los Angeles Valley area, SoCal. I purchased a 5 gallon mature Leonardo Da Vinci from a local nursery in Jan this year. The label says it’s nurtured by Stars. 50+bucks. I planted it in a rectangular planter which is deep but narrow. I had to trim off some roots to fit it all in the planter. I was quite worried because it had a late start. About a month later, it started to grow new leaves. I have to say that all Meiland’s roses I own have such beautiful deep green shinny foliage. It gets around 5 hours afternoon sunlight, and so far it has bloomed non-stop for two weeks. The flowers have the most delicious Barbie pink with a metal hue. It’s the highlight of my garden. In China where I come from, people call Leonardo Da Vinci “plastic rose” to emphasize its long-lasting blooms. The nickname holds water! Each blossom can hold about three weeks. The temperature here is around 55-80. Two things I’d like to highlight. The fragrance. A lot of people told me that Leonardo is almost perfect, but the only flaw is no scent. But my Leonardo smells quite good. It has very lovely fruit and old rose fragrance. Medium intensity. Maybe because I’m a wine drinker so my nose is more sensitive. But my point is, the mature Leonardo should have stronger scent than the younger ones. Disease resistance. The CL Iceberg I got from the same nursery infected with fungus and I could only spray milk because I released hundreds of ladybugs to eat aphids and it actually worked very well this year. Quickly it spread to Don Juan, and eventually Leonardo Da Vinci. It’s not too out of control so far. Conclusion: beautiful healthy foliage. Late start than other roses. The mature plant has medium fruity fragrance. Disease resistance is not exceptional but good. The blooms are long-lasting in flushes. Each cane has 3-5 buds and they will bloom in the same time because the middle one last long enough to wait for the others. Highly recommended!

My Leonardo is more of a short climber. It just finished a flush with blooms up and down the long -ish canes. Very clean, no blackspot, very healthy. I cant really figure out what it wants to be - a floribunda or a short climber, I think the latter. I put a short trellis behind it and will keep the long canes tied to that. It is glorious when in full bloom all up and down the canes. Judith

@Sharon z8b Texas sadly it has no fragrance. I think its listed as lightly fragrant on Heirloom’s website. I selected it because it seems to be a continuous bloomer in my hot zone 9b.

I think this is one of your most striking seedlings (and you have a LOT). The color combo is great, and the flat face makes the pattern stand out more.

Definitely an intro.

Brooke...you have a good sense of daylilies. I took "numerous" photos of this one. The color in this photo is dead on. And it "is" in the process of being converted. I bloomed this one three years ago. If I hadn't kept the bed it was born in a third year, I never would have had this one. This was the only time I ever let a bed bloom the third year..it first bloomed the third year, being crowded out by it's siblings. That first year it had one scape and 4 buds. I now have 15 scapes and the bud count has increased dramatically. Two top hybridizers, whose names you would know have more than a casual interest in it. I hesitated to show it, but I don't think many hybridizers get on this forum and you folks have been so kind to me, I wanted to let you see it first. Just don't tell anyone! thanks. Bob

Bob is Jamie doing your conversions? With your intricate and different eye patterns and now this one, you are opening up a whole new world of genetics for we non-dip people.

Brooke----I also do tets. In the next couple of years you should see some equally amazing tets. I'm about 2 years behind the dips. The parentage? "White Pat" x "Carpenter 5 eyes)--2 of my own seedlings. Jamie is doing some conversions of patterned, but not this one. I'm not sure it would be kosher to give the name, but you would know it. Bob

Was he a garden visitor a couple of weeks ago? I hope he succeeds because I think this is a really unique seedling. Having some Carpenter genetics in there, I hope it is also BIG.

I'm usually lurking, but had to surface to say this one is outstanding! I love the name. I'm glad to see you are in one of the colder zones. I'm in zone 4 and get so many seedlings that won't open the way we all like them. We need more (need, not want!) beauties like this. Great work. Your other seedling pictures are really something to see too.
