Recent storm damage - need sympathy

For those of you who remember my cedar arbor that the hummers loved, it went from this (September)

To this in the recent wind storm:

The garbage bags you see are the shredded leaves for mulching. Spread about 10 yesterday while mourning the arbor. It will take some reinforcing, and I think I can get it back to almost good as new, but it was a real disappointment to find it like this.

Thanks, Debbie. I'm sure glad to have the mulching done, as tomorrow morning we could get snow showers. Sure looks and feels like it here today.

Without close look it is hard to say how to treat the plant. There are two basic ways. First one is to tie the split apart branch up to the main stem and cover the joint with wax based paste to protect from water and pests getting in. After that reduce amount of small branches on that branch up to the two times so the remaining ones could get enough water and nutrients from the roots. Second way is to remove the broken branch and put wax based paste on the damaged area. Such sort of paste can be found in your garden center or shop, just ask assistant about anything that can be applied on damaged or cut areas of trees. I would do second way, because being tied the broken branch will suffer and finally it can die. The plant can reproduce its krone to normal look within two-three years if the branch completely removed.

Sorry to hear about the damage! Not much you can do about a microburst. We lost our large mesquite due to a microburst last August. "Luckily" the tree hit the roof -- otherwise the insurance wouldn't have covered the $1800+ removal cost. No more mess-quites for us! Here in Tucson, I regularly see Canyon Hackberry (Celtis reticulata) - in fact, I planted one in my side yard several years ago because I needed a deep-rooted tree that wouldn't disrupt the foundation or the block wall. I really like it, it's a good native wildlife tree, but it does need a little more water than mesquites, palo verdes, etc. I give it a slow 24-hour trickle every 2 weeks when it's hot - none in winter when it goes deciduous.

What about a Chinese Elm? We have one in our back yard that we planted 11 years ago from a 15 gal. pot. It is now at least 30 ft tall with at least a 30 foot spread. I absolutely love it! I would read up on it more to make sure it is the tree for you, though. Do you normally cut back your clematis after the first flush of blooms to get rebloom? If so, I would cut back now for earlier second bloom. If not, I think I would wait for a couple of weeks to see how they recover on their own. Then cut back if needed. The season is too short here for a big second bloom so I don't cut back and have to be satisfied with the scattering of blooms that continue after the first big flush. Fortunately It includes a large collection of clematis with many mid to late summer bloomers. Last year midsummer we had a huge windstorm which blew all the blossoms from my clematis along the deck. The leaves stayed but there was very little rebloom. Went from a multicolored beauty to a wall of green. Hoping for a better showing this year. .

That's awful! I know how wind storms, in our case hurricanes can damage all kinds of things. You just do what you can to put things back as they were, or make new and life goes on. At least this happened when your season is over. Now you can repair the arbor and be ready for next spring to plant some more pretties to grow and cover it. What type of morning glories where those? They are beautiful.

The MGs were Heavenly Blue and you are right, I will have time to repair the arbor before spring. Since I previously lived in So FL, I know all too well about the damage of hurricanes. This was really a tiny bump in the road by comparison. Just didn't expect it to go down, since the wind should have passed right through it. . .Live and learn.

Oh gosh that's a powerful storm. We loved the pic of the arbor with MG's in full bloom. I know it'll be back better than ever and at least the plant was done for the season.

That's for letting us see the power of Mother Nature!

Oh, what a disappointment you must have experienced. Love your MG. The heart shaped leaves are so beautiful as are the flowers. But to see all of the hard work you did creating that beautiful arbor blown down like that has to hurt. Huggs to ease your pain!

Rosebush ~ Thanks for saying which morning glories they were. Definitely 'heavenly blues'. Disappointments come in many sizes and shapes, large and small. It's always disappointing to have something of beauty come down when we were least expecting it. Have fun fixing your arbor and planning next years gardens.

I am so sorry to see what happened to your beautiful arbor. Like FlowerLady mentioned, thankfully it was at the end of the growing season.

Don't let this get you down. Rebuild, replant and it will look beautiful again.
