michelia alba transplant shock

Hi everyone,
I had transplant my michelia alba into the 5:1:1 mix about 3 to 4 days ago. Now I find the leaves of the alba curl a little bit not all but a few, this just didn't happend when transplant it also happend before the transplant. I wonder I should repot it or not? Is it because of the fertilizer I used in the mix? Should I repot it again or not please give me some advice. I don't know what to do and I also don't want it to die.

Looks normal. Newly repotted plants tend to sulk a bit for the first 1-2 weeks. Put it in a shaddy & sheltered place. And do not worry too much.

What you need to watch out for is whether the plant needs water because the roots haven't 'rooted' into the new soil the plant will need water sooner than we may think (even if the soil mix is still moist). A good hint is to watch for the new leaves. If they get droopy in the evening then the plant probably needs to be watered.

Hi Kemistry,
I have heard that if the leaves does that it might be because of the fertilizer. So, guess what I did earlier I repot the plant again into the same mix but with no fertilizer yet until the root is adjusted and until I see some new growth. I hope I don't put the plant into too much stress. This will be my last time of transplanting. Do you think that the soil is a good idea because I have never used it before. And I went home earlier I also noticed that the gardenia is doing the same thing the new growth soften and droop. But I think I will leave that one alone for now. Have you ever used the mix of 5:1:1? I have no experience using this mix so, I am very scared.
I only hope for the best. Everybody say so many good things about the mix. I hope it works for me.

LOL @ Mike. Way to tempt Robert! Hey but for $9 how can you resist Robert! My covered patios get a few hours of morning sun and then shady the rest of the day. But if I have to move them to the sun or all shade I can do that too. What do you have in mind Robert? I have two non-fragrant Orchids that are completely neglected... sitting in the garage somewhere. I didn't know orchids have a fragrance! Kemistry that is one gorgeous Gardenia if I ever saw one. Sheesh... what do you do to get it to look so happy?? Please share... I'm so nervous I will kill the two standards I just bought from Armstrong 3 weeks ago. At $60 a piece I don't want to see them die. Typically I kill them shortly after Mother's day. So I'm getting really nervous just about now!

Will do, thanks Grant! I bought the tree 3 weeks prior. I made sure to choose a tree that had signs of new leaf growth and possibly even a flower (no luck). This tree was originally quite healthy looking apart from a couple of small brown spots on one of the lower branch. I kept in in the original pot for 3 weeks to acclimate to the positlion. Although a couple of more leaves appeared to have additional brown spots, it looked overall healthy. I decided to transpot it because the tree seems quite squished and I also noted how compact the surface roots look. Keeping a close eye on it and hoping for the best. I just wanted to be sure if it was not fungus and/or spider mites or anything other serious problems so I can proactively diffuse the situation. Here’s a photo from a top branch

Hi, myeu. I don't have an alba now, tho I did grow one some years back, so I'm certainly not an expert. But I had some thoughts to share: When I get a nice healthy plant, even a small one, I never notice a noticeable "adjustment period". I'd say growth would usually start within a few weeks. However, most plants don't put on appreciable new growth until the weather warms up nicely. Especially needed are warm *nights*, 65 or so. How long have you been having nights that warm there? Your climate may be too dry for this, but I find many plants thrive better here outdoors in summer. They seem to know the difference between real sunshine and the thru-the-window stuff, and the warm nights give them a big boost. Real sun and the attendant warmth is going to be the #1 growth stimulant you can provide. The other thing about being outdoors is that misting isn't something you have to do with a squirt bottle. You can turn a hose mister on them several times a day, and really drench them, especially the stems. This heavy misting is the one thing that always encourages thick new growth to sprout along the stems. After several weeks of this, you'll be astounded by the new growth coming on. This really is a wonder-worker. I would also recommend a clay pot-- clay isn't magic, but it's a little more forgiving than plastic, and it keeps the roots cooler. Please don't start with fertilizers and chemicals until your plant is showing some growth. These can really hurt an ailing plant. Finally, I bought a lot from TT some years ago, but this year was disappointed with the puny plants I got from them last summer (except for one, Jasmine molle). The puniness was definitely correlated with the rareness and expensiveness of the plant. The rarer and more expensive, the punier. If your plant was weak to start with, it may take it a good sweet while to catch up. Good luck. I hope some of these comments are helpful to you.

I airlayered my michelia abla last year and it rooted on July this year. I am so happy to see that I successfully airlayering my michelia alba. But this month of Aug, I transplanted the airlayering branch into a pot. I notice that the top two branches turned to brown, but the bottom braches are still green. Hope it is not dying. Savy.... that issue could cause by various of factors.. a sudden change in temp, too cold, too much sun, too much water, too much fertilizer.. etc. Michelia alba is really tough so just watch your watering and give it some time to adapt to the change.

I have been using 511 and love it. It does take sometime to make the mix right. My first patch of 511 wasn't terribly good but i did learn to tweak it a bit for my growing environment.

If the new growth is soften and droop in the evening then your plant may need water. Newly transplanted plants I usually water mine every 2-3 days or even daily depending on the temp. That's why it's important to watch your plants even if the mix is still moist.
