WAFTING rose for East window

Hello all. I am somewhat new here. I often come here for ideas but don't often post. I posted this question to the rose forum but only got one response. I could use a few more ideas. I am looking for a long blooming rose for my East window near the house. It will get at least 5 hours of sun perhaps more. I would love for this one to waft INTO the house. It needs to get about 6' tall. I have a dark bluish/gray house so something that would stand out. I am in the hot humid South so disease resistance is a must for me. I also would prefer it not be too thorny. Can you enable me? Sharon in Pine Mt. Georgia home of Callaway Gardens.

Roses don't generally waft that far, even with huge bushes. I could recommend most david austin roses, in particular benjamin britten. How about something other than a rose which will waft?

Another plant would be fine, as long as it is a rebloomer. I have a Carolina sweet shrub near my bedroom window and I can smell it inside and outside I smell it several yards away. It is fantastic, but short-lived. I got it from an elderly aunt of mine and it was just a tiny sprig, now after 4 years it is WAY over my head. Anyway, I do want some color too! Thanks. I do love the David Austin Roses. I only have one the Heritage.

Clotilde Soupert? I guess in a hot sun position there is no chance for her to ball and her fragrance is great. Jardins de Bagatelle - my two plants never reached 4 ' tall but the perfume! - now of course maybe someone from California can contradict me by saying that there this rose is 7' tall but let's wait till this happens :-( Amazing Grace aka Myriam (you would need two, because it takes time for the huge blooms to develop and open) - I don't see height measurement anywhere except at Heirloom Roses they say: 4-5'. I doubt the 5' but maybe in Texas :-)) In any case the fragrance of this rose is awesome and it needs sun to open those huge blooms because it has so many petals. Comte de Chambord I have no idea how well it does in Texas how well it repeats but it certainly very fragrant and it is not a tall rose.

Thank you for answering, meltednorthpole. Sorry it took so long to reply. I couldn't find the thread when I looked to see if someone had answered. LOL! How did you find out the actual shipping date on your roses? By calling them? Glad about the FedEx. They like to come here first thing in the morning unlike USPS and UPS who like to deliver my stuff very late in the evening. I hate to think of the roses in a hot truck for who knows how long. And unfortunately, NE Georgia is back to it's usually temps this week. It's now technically 85, but with a real feel of 98! If anything gets planted outside it'll have to be 1st thing in the A.M.! :D

Robert, Your great-grandmother was right. I am truly sorry to hear about the damage done by the hail. As a gardener, I live in absolute dread of such terrible hail damage, although it has only happened to me a couple of times. Although we often get small hail, we usually get "garden killer" hail here only about once a decade, which is still once too often. How destroyed are your plants? When hail has destroyed mine in May or June some years, I have pruned them back and sprayed them with Daconil to prevent infection in the cuts and wounds and have had them bounce back as long as they had some foliage left, ragged and tattered though it might be. I am not sure they can bounce back in in a similar way in the heat of July, but they might. What do you think? And, my heart bleeds at the thought of your tropicals all shredded and torn up because you have the most beautiful tropicals and your patio was just lovely in the photos you've posted. I know that I cannot imagine the frustration you are feeling now. On the bright side, maybe the hail set back the bamboo! Sending your warm wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery. Dawn

I would agree with you except that as I mentioned, they were indoor plants, and I'm sure I had them shipped during the winter/early spring so shipping wouldn't have "cooked" them. Unless I am misunderstanding your comment? I do know the climate here is extremely dry, much different than in PA, and my roses constantly got powdery mildew in the house here in Phoenix; yet in PA I rarely if ever had that problem. Since then I've been monitoring the humidity inside and it's been pretty constant at between 20 - 25% (of course outside it gets as low as 1%). I'm guessing Burlington Roses is no longer in business? A quick search brought up cached webpages but no current website. I do remember a favorite micro mini that I loved so much, I named my cat after it in PA - it was called "Spice Drop". It was a pretty small pink micro mini and did extremely well in PA, but when I got the same variety here, it got powdery mildew to the extent I couldn't save it. I got pretty discouraged about raising roses in general that I just stopped even looking at them. Although I see a lot of "tough" roses being raised outdoors here, obviously none are minis. I'm solely looking for a tiny indoor pot rose to try my hand at again. Perhaps in October/November when it starts to get below 100 reliably I will restart my search efforts.

What about osmanthus delavyii, heterophyllus, burkwoodii. If you had a trellis, you could grow mandevilla laxa up it and some other jasmines. They're not repeat blooming but they do last for a while. Clethras also flower for a fairly long period in the late summer/autumn.

Hi goatster, Rosa rugosa is very fragrant, wafts beautifully, is quite disease resistant, and is certainly harty in your zone. Btw, it also has beautiful large red hips for autumn interest. There are several cultivers to choose from too. Check it out. Regards, Jerry

I love the Rugosa roses and have Hansa ordered and on the way, but that rose will go out back near the fence. Rugosa roses are much too prickly for near the house! I need something with very little thorns. Thanks!

David austin do do thornless roses, and even the benjamin britten I suggested doesn't have that many thorns. Best to check out the faq for plants that waft.

When I lived in Savannah, my favorite rose was Louis Phillipe. Everything about it was graceful and elegant.

Goatster, I truly hope you love Louis as much as I did. It's my favorite rose of all time and I'd get it again in a heartbeat if China roses survived our winters up here!
