First Annual Plant I.D. Party

The Deerfield Beach Arboretum will have its first annual Plant ID Party on Saturday, May 16.

Over the years, have purchased many trees, palms and shrubs but have lost their names. Maybe we know the genus but not the species. Maybe the tag was lost in a repot or it just faded out. Maybe it was labeled one thing but turned out to be something different. In any event, we need help and that is where you ID geniuses come in!

There will be a contest to see who can ID the most plants correctly. There will be prizes and booby prizes. There will be lunch. There will be an auction.

Not all the details have been worked out, but we ask that you bring a covered food dish and plants for donation and to auction. Any plant that will garner attention at the auction is wanted.

Jerry - How will you know if we're correct? Sounds like fun and educational; count me in!

Thanks Ricky. It will be a lot of fun. I think that with all the ID talent around here, we will come up with the correct names.

The date may change to May 23 as there are some conflicts with the city Parks and Rec schedule. I will keep everyone up to speed on all the details.

Preamble: My gardening style could be politely termed 'semi-organised chaos'. (The neighbour warns his kids about lofting their tennis balls over the fence - 'it's a jungle in there!' Ha!) So the daffodils hang out with a sequence of perennials, mostly: Hosta, Astrantia, Saxifrage, Libertia, Clematis integrifolia, polite Tradescantia, Origanum, Athyrium, Thalictrum, and bulbs that flower later such as Tritonia, Freesia, Ixia, Albuca, and the occasional calla. The 'worst' leaf problem comes, for me, from the very earliest - such as 'Erlicheer' - whose leaves linger until nearly Christmas and they're too big to disguise, so I pretend they're not there and let the Aquilegias, miniature roses, and true Geraniums divert the eyes. (It mostly 'works'...I hope.) If I use annuals I tend to go for plants such as petunia, verbena, and Impatiens because I am a lazy waterer for the in-ground plants. The plus, for me, is that the perennials are well-established now and quickly cover the daffodil sites with leaves without encroaching on their actual space; so the soil stays protected and slightly damper - which suits several of the cyclamineus sorts. And they're at rest when the daffs are heading toward the sun. The annuals usefully provide colour spots and continuity. I'd propose using both.

ncrescue..so THAT'S what I have ! Italian arum. It was a houseplant given to me and I tossed it on the compost pile in the woods. Didn't plant it. Now it hasn't grown bigger or spread but it's a dependable and interesting rich green against the leaves. What I have out there in native abundance is mayapples. Every tree that falls down brings more dappled light and the mayapples spread by underground shoots. Used to try and avoid stepping on them but now there are so many I don't watch where I'm stepping anymore.

Annie, Your box went out yesterday morning. DC# 03062400000028162590 Hope you like everything. I sent you some daylily seeds also; saw on your trades page that you were getting started collecting them. There is nothing better than going out in your garden in the a.m. and seeing a daylily bloom for the very first time anywhere. Hope they turn out beautiful for you. You should store them in the veggie bin and plant in peat pots in a sunny window in Feb. or you can wait and plant them directly in the garden in early spring. Sorry these Iris are a little dry. When I dug up my clumps last month for trades my back started hurting soon after; so these have been sitting around waiting for me to get them replanted. You saved their lives!!! LOL They are dry, but not nearly as dry as the ones you buy in the stores. Don't you dare feel terrible about Jennid. It's my fault!!! Being a newbie I was just so anxious to get my new treasures I didn't wait long enough before contacting you. As we all know.....nobody's perfect; and I'm certainly not... by a long shot. :) I'm sure Jennid has forgiven us both; she is a really sweet person. Roxanne

What annuals to plant in front (south facing) of house? Chicagoland

Being on the south side you want something that can tolerate heat. I have flower beds in full sun like yours so I'll try to tell you what I have success with. You can't go wrong with Magellan Zinnias or any zinnias really but I just love the Magellan series. They have huge 4 inch flowers on a 12 inch plant. Marigolds would do well there. They can take the heat and keep on blooming. Janie is only 8 inches high and has a profusion of blooms. I like Janie Yellow but there are many dwarf varieties in varying colors. Zonal Geraniums may be a bit taller but can take the heat and don't mind drying out. Portulaca(often called moss rose for it's rose like flowers) is a low growing annual that loves the heat. As a bonus it will drop seeds and come back another year or you can collect seeds from it. It comes in many colors and makes a terrific edging. I wouldn't plant petunias there

OK here is the deal on the Plant ID Party.

SATURDAY MAY 23

* 10:00 AM starts the ID Contest. There may be some informal tours going on at the same time.

* Noon: Lunch!

* Noon thirty-ish: Awards for Contest

* 1:00 PM There will be a live auction, and a Chinese auction (silent auction).

What to bring? A covered dish (appetizer, entree or dessert) Also bring a plant for the auction and maybe a plant to donate to the Arboretum. Bring your ID skills, but if you are rusty, bring your books with you. Cheating is encouraged. Remember, Arboretum members get extra points and the ID judges accept bribes for the Arboretum. It IS a fund raiser after all!
Bring a comfy patio/beach chair.
Bug spray or sun screen if you need it.
Bring your checkbook for the auction!

There will be prizes and booby prizes.

Most of the unknown palms will have the genus but not the species. Most of the unknown flowering trees have the genus as well, but there are many completely unidentified trees.

Let me know if you are coming so I get a rough idea how many people to prepare for.
