I was never able to grow a Gardenia indoors until I met this site and you wonderful people.

In my experience, since I have joined this site this is what I have learned.

It takes at least 6 things to come together to grow a perfectly healthy and happy Gardenia and to avoid yellowing leaves, especially indoors.

I always wondered why I never got a yellow leaf outdoors in the summer,why they grew so well, and then, why I use to have a constant problem with them once brought indoors. I was great at growing them once they went outside, but once indoors, forget it, yellowing leaves and then soon after , death until now......

If you can apply these ingrediants I have learned from experience and info from this forum, especially growing them up north, then , you will truly be pleased with your rsults as I have been. It is possible to enjoy the pleasant smell of these wonderful plants, even here!

This is my experience for indoor growing up north, maybe for the southern folks could learn too...:=)

Water, light, soil, nutrition,humidity, air, and pesticide. All needed! A must! If just one is missing, plan on difficulty, and maybe yellowing leaves..:-(

It can be done though...:-). Just be patient and keep trying.

Water...Provide just enough of it. Do not over water, and let dry out between waterings. Too much is sure to produce root rot, and yes yeloowing leaves. When I water to soon, as soon as the next day, YES the next day, I get yellowing leaves!

Soil... Plant in a well and fast draining soil, one that dries out rather quickly, within a spanse of few days, such as less than a week.. Wet too long produces, yellowing leaves!

LIGHT... LOTS of it...Or SUN! Everytime my lights accidently forget to come on, and they get little light, I get yellowing leaves within a day or two. As soon as I put the lights on for long hours, or especially when it is sunny, and not cloudy for more than a day or two, the yellowing stops immediatly. This has been the MAJOR factor for my denias to stop, yes, yellowing leaves!!

Nutrition... Well we all know they like the perfect nutrition! All the minors,iron and everything else in between, in a good fertilizer. Less than perfect fertilzer, yellowing leaves!

Humidity and air... Even us humans breathe better when air has moisture in it, and it is fresh.. Using a humdifier and a fan that keeps air circulating, really helps. Very dry stagnet air spells insects and yup...yellowing leaves!

Pests.... None of us like to be bugged to death! lol

So keep pests off, especially mites. Lots of pests means falling and yes, yellowing leaves!

So my point?

Unless you can bring most of, if not all of these needs of a gardenia together, in perfect harmony, and be patient, you will have some problems, and give up.

There is hope! It can be done!

This site will help you to master all your denia needs such it has done for me and gain the experience needed to grow happy plants without yellowing leaves!!..:-)

I have mastered all these needs so far..Fingers crossed!

Thanks to all of you for the support in being sucessful, in what can be the hardest plant to keep in captivity indoors at the north pole! What would I do without all of you.:-)

I would be happy if the buds just didn't fall off -- never mind about the yellow leaves!

Mine are not fancy cultivars, just ones that I rescued from near death -- one was greatly reduced at a store, another had been given to a friend.

I tried the garlic/cayenne pepper spider mite spray and, as far as I can tell, it seems to have worked on the gardenias. I have the humidifier going now, full blast and the buds are coming along. Keeping fingers crossed.

HA! During WWI, for the war effort, my great great great grandmother would get permission to cordon off short sections of paved streets, on which she scattered rubber bands of varying diameter. Under her miraculous care, within days the rubber bands grew into trees so laden with tires for various types of military vehicles that often she and the neighbors couldn't harvest them all before they became larger than intended; this, necessitating that they be trimmed back to a usable size. She would then have the trimmings ground into powder, which she mixed with white milk. When the slurry of rubber and milk was heated under pressure in small molds (like sinker molds or toy soldier molds, if you've ever made either from lead), the result was Ficus elastica seeds which were sold to tree farmers all over the world and served as the propagules for essentially every rubber tree plantation currently in existence. I sure do miss that lovely and determined old gal. ....... at her 100th in 1966: She sure was something. Sad that we have to wait until next summer to see her again. Michelin has kept her so busy at headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, France for the last 49 years, she hasn't been able to get back to the states to see ANY of her great, great, great, great grandchildren. Will my Western Redbud grow more leaves this season?

I'm in sunset zone 24 in southern california, 2 miles from the beach. I've had a western redbud in the ground for at least a decade, if not longer. I wondered why every spring mine never bloomed profusely like it was blooming when we bought it from the inland nursery. Found out several years later they tend not to bloom much in locations close to the ocean because the coastal weather moderates the temperatures so much, and they seem to like the extremes of weather farther inland in order to thrive. This seems to be the case. A few years back when we had a colder than normal winter, it bloomed the best it ever has the following spring. I see Sunnyvale is also close to the ocean, so if blooming is important to you (the hummingbirds love it when it blooms) as a native tree, you might want to consider something else. As far as leaves are concerned, it should be fine. Don't overwater! You will probably have trunks come up from the base. I know on another garden forum, some people consider them pests or weeds. I think it's a lovely, small, multi-trunk native tree, as long as if you're on the coast, you don't expect it to bloom much.

Maybe "cheating", but Grafted (onto G. thunbergia) gardenias by Monrovia (sold in many nurseries or directly thru website}, though $$ are much hardier/less fussy with watering & dying!!! The only plant I have truly killed is a gardenia! (Rose & fragrant flower nut.) I have an August Beauty (nursery person thinks since tag fell off), whose flowers are Huge! (3 1/2" in Fremont, CA in a 21" pot, now 4 years old & entire plant is enormous 4' x4'x3' with a slight weeping habit.). P. S. It did well but has really started to take off in the last 2 years once I was brave enough to cut off a strong shoot that never really had the right leaves & no flowers, finally figured out that was a "sucker" from the rootstock though situated smack in the center. That said, I've just started growing a double flowered Arabian Jasmine Sambac "Summer Soul" also Monrovia (pic). The flowers are huge for a jasmine 1-1 1/2" & the scent is heavenly (TDF), this beats everything else I have ever grown for scent hands down no contest, roses, gardenias, other jasmine etc.!!!!! P. P. S. Tried several other fragrant "gardenia-like" plants. Easier to grow but not impressed with strength/quality of scent on any. Including: African Gardenia (Mitriostigma axillare) & Orange Jasmine (Murraya paniculata) from Logee. Vietnamese Gardenia (Gardenia (Kailarsenia) vietnamensis) from Top Tropicals, & Double-Flowering Crape Jasmine (tabernaemontana divaricata 'flore pleno') from Kartuz greenhouses, also super slow 1st year. All outdoor pots in Fremont, CA, acid-loving potting soil, & no fertilizer till 2nd year just to be safe.

Hi Toni, I have all my gardenias previously planted in pots in plain loamy garden soil (rich black soil) with lots of earthworms and humus (decaying matter). They were very happy and green until I transferred them to the ground. Our local topsoil is actually contaminated with construction debris particularly concrete fragments, making our topsoil extremely basic. After transplanting to the ground, majority of my gardenias rapidly became chlorotic. However, I just let them be because there is nothing I can do about the soil. The contamination and leaching of lime to the topsoil is extensive. Despite the 'bad soil', my gardenias are still growing happily and they still bloom for me despite the chlorosis. They have grown from 1 ft tall plants in the pots to more than 3ft tall in the ground. I think the fuss about gardenias liking acidic soils and dying in basic soils or in 'less-than-perfect' garden soils are highly exaggerated. These plants (gardenias) are actually highly adaptable to various soil types like other plants. They even survive sandy soils fit for a cactus but they just won't be 'picture perfect' (similar to my gardenias). What gardenias (and michelia albas) do hate however is too much moisture in the soil particularly around their roots. I had ALL my gardenias rapidly dropping leaves and leaves turning yellow when my helper watered them daily despite the daily rains in our area. I was lucky to have immediately spotted the rapid leaf yellowing and dropping problem as I rarely attend to or inspect my gardenias anymore. (I have more problematic plants to take care of like my 'chilli thrip' infested roses, unhappy hydrangeas and suicidal apple seedlings.) Anyway, after telling my household helper not to water my gardenias anymore because it is rainy season in our climate, the leaf yellowing and dropping stopped. That's how sensitive these plants are to overwatering. Anyway to illustrate my point, here's a photo of my chlorotic gardenias (variegated and non-variegated) planted in the ground with less-than- perfect 'basic' soil: In contrast, I have 'Euphorbia milii' plants which are supposed to be 'succulent' plants similar in 'soil' and water requirements to cacti. Here they are thriving and flowering profusely in pots filled with rich, black, loamy garden soil which is 'less-than-perfect' and actually counterindicated for a succulent plant like Euphorbia milii. (Succulents prefer sandy soils as they are adapted to dry, arid, climates.) tropical

If your plants are indoors all winter, I can uderstand.
Once the SUN gets stronger, and longer hours of it shine on your plants, and then when your plants suck up all of those warm rays, watch the buds take off. Watch your plant take off like fireworks for you, probably in a month or two if they are in full sun.
Even with almost perfect conditions in my home, even I loose a couple of buds here and there, but most seem to stay little, and attached,then start to grow when the spring arrives and days are longer.:-)
I am just happy to keep them alive and well, full of leaves and not bare, or dead. I never expect the flowers to break forth, that would be asking for alot for me,, and if they do, that is an extra special gift from my babies that long for better conditions than I can give them for now...:-)

Thanks for distilling the tips to avoid yellowing leaves from gardenias grown indoors in cold climates. You have basically created an easy reference for gardenweb users for this number one and most common gardenia problem.

Actually, those who succeed in growing gardenias without yellowed leaves, frequently face another problem... the number two most common gardenia problem: BUD DROPPING.

Open flowers and buds are very elusive with gardenias. Gardenias can have a gazillion buds at one time but only 2 or 3 of them ever get to open in any particular period (sometimes even none)! The rest of the buds drop to the ground before they even open.

How to stop a gardenia from BUD DROPPING? Maybe others here can share their experiences in how to make all the buds open and not allow a single one to drop... Doing a rain dance perhaps? :)
