too late... next year. i've never planted sprouted onions... i suppose they'd send off bulbettes.... put in any case, onions are set in late fall here for harvest in april (or earlier). they take months. same for potatoes.

if you're looking for easy cheap, try sticking the root-ends of fresh scallions and leeks. they grow quickly and you can 'cut and come again' with them. i have a stand of mixed leeks and scallions that are several years old. always ready to pick. and leeks are quite expensive.

I did that once with a sprouted onion. Granted it was June when I put it in a pot and it didn't exactly appreciate the summer heat. But at the end of the day it turned to mush and all I got was a couple divided bulbettes that failed in the heat. So yeah. Don't do it at this time of the year.

Home Depot/Lowes puts onion sets out in Feb/March because the corporate machine doesn't differentiate between regions. They take about 100 days to mature so you really need to put them in the ground January at the latest. I started way too late this year because the bed wasn't ready and will probably only get medium sized bulbs.

Scallions are really easy to maintain and provide a never ending supply as well. And they laugh at the occasional freeze. Then after a few years they go to seed and you can resupply yourself.

I didn't think you were supposed to use grocery store potatoes as seed potatoes due to the pesticides, etc on them.

I cut up my old potato to let it dry before planting. It turned it black and icky so I put it in the compost where it is growing nicely.

This might not be true, but I tried to grow garlic once with a grocery-store bulb and it didn't sprout. Someone told me that they treat garlic, onions, etc. with some kind of chemical to keep them from sprouting. If that's true, wonder what it's doing to our bodies?? If I were young and trying to have children, I think I would think about buying organic.

As often as they sprout in my refrigerator I don't think it's true or a least not common. I have heard that about birdseed.

I have never heard the pesticide story. I guess you shouldn't buy potatoes from the store! I have plenty of plants going strong. A friend in St. Cloud harvested 80 lb. of delicious Yukon Gold from 5lb. of Publix potatoes last season. Also the garlic in the store is the right type to grow in the south. Doing well. Takes about one year.
