Would like suggestions for reds and purples

My daylilies are almost at peak and I am realizing that I have lots of yellows, peach, cream, orange and pinks but am lacking in dark colors like reds and dark purples. I would appreciate suggestions. Things that have done well for you.

Strutter's Ball for the purple,
Forever Red for the red.
I'm located in North Ga., with rocks and red clay, I don't think these two will disappoint you.

There have been several threads on this forum with members showing their favorite reds and purples. You can do a search and find them, I'm sure. :)
I just started a thread tonight with some of my dl's on it, and there is one of my fav. reds in it. Hearts Of Fire

I'll be the dissenting voice and say that I like the purple foliage, as long as it isn't over-planted. Crimson King Norway maples aren't bad (the invasive problems come from them being Norway maples, not the purple color). We have several very old, very large copper beeches in my town, and I consider them to be some of the most beautiful trees I've ever seen. Overall, I would say that if 10-20% of the trees on a street or in a large yard are purple, it provides a nice color contrast. Anything higher, and it makes the area look too dark.

There are a few purple Pennisetums which are smaller than Rubrum: Pennisetum setaceum 'Eaton Canyon' Pennisetum purpureum 'Princess Molly' Pennisetum purpureum 'Princess' Pennisetum purpureum 'Princess Caroline' The newest entry in the Royal Pennisetum Collection is Pennisetum purpureum 'First Knight.' It's about the same size as Rubrum, but it's rumored to be marginally hardy to zone 7. I'm going to give it a try next year. It probably won't reach its full size potential in zone 7.

Kent's Favorite Two and Hearts of Fire are the best reds I have in my garden - Kent's is a brilliant red that holds its color well, and Hearts of Fire is a little deeper red, with lovely ruffles. It also holds color well. Too many of them have a dramatic color change when the hot summer sun gets high in the sky.

Other reds that I have are Fire Music (prolific bloomer, a gorgeous red with a deeper eye), Chewonki (very exciting red) and Chicago Apache (true red). James Marsh is a darker red, but it hasn't multiplied for me and doesn't have a lot of blooms.

The purples I have are Fortune's Dearest (blooms like crazy and is very fertile), Forbidden Fantasy, Pirate King, Chicago Knobby (new) and Making Whoopee (a diploid). These are medium purple, not the very dark type.

Two others I like very much are Russian Rhapsody and Zinfandel. The latter is more on the reddish wine side -- very colorful and both of these also hold their color well.

Graham Memorial is one of my fav reds. I recently posted a pic of it. I'm generally not too crazy about reds but the white edging really makes the red stand out, I think. It has done well for me, as a matter of fact the day that I took the pic was the ffo, or I guess I should say the first 3 flowers on it this season. A real keeper in my book.

My 2 favorite reds are Rocket Booster (WOW huge bloom) and Francis of Assisi (beautiful open face with white edging)

THESE EYES is a yummy shade of purple.

Also, you might want to check out some of Karrol Emmerich's daylilies. She has many really great loolong purples.

Hi,
I posted about dark purples a few weeks back. I actually misspoke, for I really was interested in mid, clear purples. I say that b/c I had some suggestions for Black Ambrosia, which is interesting b/c that one was about to bloom for the first time in my garden the next day! Now having seen it, I would definitely call Black Ambrosia more purple, not almost black, though really deep. It smells great, too. From a recent visit to a nursery, I saw a clump of Shaka Zulu--prettiest purple by far of several hundred plants. Really nice. Most responders to my post listed Strutter's Ball as top purple.

Point of View is a really large red flower that towers and holds its color well. When it's still dark red by mid-afternoon on a 90 degree plus day in Georgetown, SC, it's a good performer. I have Chicago Apache, too, and like it, though it's not bloomed this year yet (it was just moved).

My favorite "hot" color: Burning Inheritance. Awesome color!
