crackingtheconcrete, Having someone send me rust still upsets me. If more people weren't ambivalent about rust, maybe we wouldn't have to deal with it. Anyway, the procedure I've seen recommended and think it works well is to strip the outer two leaves on each side of each fan, then cut the remaining leaves off down just into the white portion. About a half inch above the crown. You can soak the plant in a 5% bleach solution if you wish, won't hurt. I follow with a soak in 1/2 teaspoon SuperThrive in 3 gals of water. Then pot up or plant in a spot isolated from your main garden. Monitor the plant through a rust period or about six months minimum before introducing it to your garden. Hi Judy, Aphids can show up very fast, but what you have might be white flies... look remarkably like little dead bug bodies - and rarely move around. Aphids are easy to see, light lime green and usually a ton of them surrounding new growth and buds. Rust can spread, and quickly to your other plants. If it is rust, I would definatly remove foliage and start using a fungicide. There are lots of sites and studies concering the effectiveness of certian fungicides on rust, but the cheapest effective one mentioned in these studies that I can readily find is Chlorothalonil. Lots of people here can give you other remedies (fungicide recs). They are usually really helpful... I recommend looking through other threads here... unfortunately, I can't get the search function to work for me lately...so you might have to do it page by page...

I have kept close track of the rust in my garden this year. I plan to do as Ed suggests and cut back all of the foliage this winter, even the youngest seedlings. I have gotten rid of the daylilies that were most prone to rust. They were, IMO, rust magnets and not worth the trouble they were causing. And I have some that have have had very little rust. The little bit of rust I have found on the following DL's (if any) has been confined to the bottom leaves closest to the ground. When these leaves are removed, the clump has stayed rust free for an entire growing season. They aren't listed because they've been here less than 1 year ... or I have found them to be somewhere in the middle (they aren't good enough to call rust resistant nor bad enough to call rust magnets). Thanks for your comments, Kathy! I also appreciate the information on KNIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN. (I did a Google search on that daylily name and rust, but it didn't pop up anything; usually most daylilies that are on the daylilyrust.org survey list will pop up near the top of such a Google search, but for whatever reason it didn't, and I didn't think to search the list anyway. Duh!) I didn't realize that rust resistance (or lack thereof) was not a concern for many people. I do not like spraying chemicals around my garden, so it is very much a concern to me. I have a small backyard hybridizing operation too, which is mostly aimed at polymerous daylilies. I like the near-whites, though (what else are you going to use in your Moon Garden?), and so I am both acquiring those in tets (I am moving away from dips), and starting to try my hand at hybridizing those. (I want large lovely consistently formed flowers that open early and well after a cool/cold night, on tall well-branched and budded scapes, on a rust resistant plant. Good flower substance, diamond dusting, fragrance, extended bloom, and rebloom would be nice, too! I'm not asking for much, am I? LOL!) I realize that I am risking rusty seedlings by using a rusty parent, but I am hopeful that at least some offspring will be an improvement on that score, if the other parent has some rust resistance. One can dream, anyway. I don't know if I would ever sell anything, even if I were ever so fortunate enough to actually get a seedling worth registering. Wouldn't one be required to get a nursery license, which would bring with it nursery inspectors (did I say that I like my privacy?) and therefore doubtless a requirement to SPRAY? Um, no thanks. (I have actually given this what-if scenario a bit of thought. One option, I suppose, would to be to move to a zone 5 area - but I don't think DH would be willing to go along with that! Another option would be to ask someone else to introduce for me, but that is something that I would feel funny about and would be hesitant to do, even if they got all the money and I got all the glory. I would think that the established hybridizers (ones with their own nurseries and commercial presence) would want to concentrate on their own introductions.)
