Ponderosa pine and similar tree care

User

I've done some web searching, but it seems that there isn't a lot of information about how to care for ponderosa pine trees. I planted some on my property and they have been slow growing. Perhaps it's because they were planted in the lawn. The tallest is now 6 feet tall, but the others are more like 4 feet tall after about 6 years.

Is it ok to feed them in the wintertime? Should I be killing the grass farther than the 2' that I've cleared away from them so far? Any particular type of mulch that they favor?

I've planted about 10 of the ponderosa pines and two spruces. I also have four volunteer oaks and a volunteer silver maple. Coaxing growth from a tree has not been easy. Only now are the 6 year old oak trees starting to look like they're going to make it.
