It never rains in California......

except that this morning, it DID rain here in the Oakland hills (SF Bay Area) even though it's only September! And our normal temps of 75-80 degrees are a shivery 60 degrees instead.

But you see, I made this happen. Yes, me! I'm guilty.

Not because I wanted to avoid watering my garden yet again.

No, this happened because I opened a can of polyurethane stain to finish my DH's new desk units for his upcoming birthday. I had just done the first coat yesterday and wanted to sand and put the final second coat on today. But of course, now I can't.

EVERY TIME I do staining or painting that is oil-based, it seems to rain. Really.

I think it's my version of rain dance.....!

We got rain too, nearly a half inch! : ) I think you need to start a home business if it works that well. Only five inches in the last 16 months! Get busy with that poly! I hear there is even snow in the Sierras, but I can't see for the clouds.

Or Murphy's Law. My experience of dealing with Murphy's law I have found you have to be sneaky with jobs like yours, it's a waiting game. Have all the things you need for the job collected and ready for use, then, totally ignore the whole project. Murphy will get tired of waiting and go off to annoy someone else. This is when you pounce, it works for me.
It really is a bummer when you're trying to get a project finished, especially in a certain time frame. Hoping for sunny skies to come your way.

Oh, I hope NOAA is correct. We could use the rain. I planted my tomato plant in early spring, then came a heat wave and only two tomatoes set. We ate them yesterday and they were delicious. The plant has a lot of flowers and tomatoes in different stages, but the plant may turn tempremental (pun intented) and shut down. This may be a two tomato summer.

My 2 beds are raised 8-12 inches and dug out another 2 feet deep. Then I sifted the red Virginia clay with a 1/2 inch screen stretched over 2x4s and blended in peat & homemade compost. (I know what your thinking, clay cannot be sifted). It must be at just the right moisture level and it takes a lot of effort. I turn in about 200 lbs. of homemade compost both spring & fall to keep them from reverting back into 2 giant bricks. I use lots of mower chopped pine needles in my compost because they take long to fully decompose, they help lower my ph slightly and they are free. I use a drip system but I only water in the evening because the birds come and pig out on my worms if I water in the AM. Earthworms are my best friends. I use a garden fork rather than a rototiller, as I feel a machine might throw to much soil out of the beds and kill to many worms. I also use a method called double digging. It involves taking some soil out of one end of the bed and replacing it at the other after breaking up the subsoil. Clay takes a lot of work initially, but maintenance is fairly easy after the second year.

Lilo, I am happy for you that your area has gotten rain. If it were possible, I would have shared some of what we've gotten over the last six weeks. We've had more than we need, and while lawns, flowers, and gardens are lush and green, we could use a little of your sunshine. The weather pattern for the rest of July is more of the same. Mother Nature doesn't do things in moderation, does she?

it is not a problem if you inject them with a known species. Also shelf - like mushrooms can be good or bad to eat, but never deadly. IMHO it is always best to inject under controlled conditions, then transfer the injected mass into larger bodies. example, one gallon spawn to ten gallons, ten gallons to a large bed. and keep in mind that regular oyster do not eat conifers. they don't have the enzymes. It has to be phoenix. I put some of my dried shiitake dust in soup most nights. If and when you become good at it, you can inject mulch in shaded situations, for example under corn. Then you get your compost and eat it too.

I'm getting the poly out tomorrow in hopes that Murphy will visit me. We need rain sooooooo bad. Everything in my garden is crisp.

Well, gosh.....and here I was thinking it was MY fault because I've been painting my new Berkeley garage for the past two weeks and was about to put the last bit of color (poppy red) on the barn doors and down came the rain.........Aren't we a month early for this wet stuff, here in the S.F. Bay?

DH flew in over the Sierras from Denver yesterday and said there is indeed snow in the mountains. YAY! We got another half inch last evening. We may not see more rain until the New Year, but I sure hope we are heading into one of the 20 inch years that bump our average up a bit.

Yes, by all means, carry on ladies. The last time it rained here was the day after I washed my car....for the first time since last spring (2006!). $30 at the car wash. The next day it rained and I had to drive these gumbo roads and put back everything I had washed out of the wheel wells. Sigh. We're dry again too. I hope todays wind is blowing in a nice storm for the evening.

Do I ever feel ripped off! The showers were very hit and miss. We got missed. We had one 20 minute shower on Friday morning and one other little renegade shower early Saturday morning. It barely washed the dust off. Rain was falling all around, and I had to water today.

I should have washed the truck I guess.

LOL, jkom! Hey, if you want someone to share the blame, I'll step up to the plate. I was all ready to start Warerlox-ing the walnut island top hubby made when it started pouring here. It came down, on and off, for three days! The nerve! Doesn't it know it can't rain until October? ; )

I hope you got your DH's desk finished. Lucky guy he is to have you doing the finish work. I'm sure it's going to be lovely! : )

Yep, I got it here in the bay area as well. THANK goodness it didn't show up a week later since I always plan my kid's fall birthdays outside with no back-up plan. I mean, why else live in CA? ;)

Rub, rub, rub. :^) I'd loan him out but he still needs to build my hutch. And I asked him to change a couple of the pullouts he made to drawers. He may give up woodworking after what I have put him through. lol!

Good to know folks all over the state received some of this glorious liquid gold. Now lets all cross fingers and toes that we'll get lots more in the coming months.
