The one I was waiting for..

This is the one with the good branching and bud count. I couldn't get a full photo of her but I really like this one. I know Rita and some others don't like spidery types but most do....Ellie

This one looks very similar to one I posted yesterday but the parents are different. They both have huge blooms though and this one doubled last year!

I loved this one last year and still do!!

I was ready to discard this one and saw the wavy petals and decided to give it another year..

I'm throwing this one in for Kay and Rita. This was the one from last year that was so big and beautiful.

This seedling has been around for 4 years and the labels had been tossed but this is her fist bloom year. I'm sorry now that I tossed the label..

I don't like the form much but I do like the pattern. I'll give it more time to curl or something..

Are 1 and 3 Two shots of the same daylily or are they siblings? I like them both with 3 getting the slight edge for me. I also like 4 a lot. Great job. You really have some beauties this year.

Aka - 'Jimsonweed'. During the Revolutionary War, the starving militia at Jamestown ate Datura leaves out of desperation. They became very ill and tripped out big time for days! It was called Jamestown weed...and over time the name became Jimsonweed. Datura likes to grow in hot, dry places and prefers sandy soil. They like access to water, but need good drainage. I guess that is why they grow wild along sandy river banks and valleys and down in arroyos. Some catalog and nursery companies erroneously sell it as 'Angel Trumpet' flower, especially the purple and white one. Thus the confusion to some people. However, it should be noted that Brugmansia is commonly called 'Angel Trumpets, while Datura is known as 'Devil's Trumpet' - maybe because all parts of it contains an alkaloid poison. Perhaps they are aptly called Devil's Trumpet since they grow best in hot, forbidden places! :) Growing up in So. California, Jimsonweed grew wild throughout the sandy valley of the Santa Margarita River. My family used to camp down there near the river in the summertime and at night the air was swimmingly filled with the sweetly intoxicating fragrance of their blooms. They were hell on bare feet though. When the moon was full, those 'Moonflowers' glowed like lanterns, which came in very handy when you needed to go potty at night and had to watch out for Diamondback rattlers! You do not want to moon a rattlesnake!. I grew the white variety for several years. Still have seeds. I have photos of them somewhere. I was just as jubilant the first time they bloomed. I took gobs of photos. I have seeds for the purple and white variety too. I got them in a trade. They were labeled as 'Angel's Trumpets'. Just never get around to sowing them. (bad girl, BAD! ) Every year I tell myself that I am going to grow them and then always forget to do it in the spring rush to get my veggies going. You have all inspired me to dig them out and do it! Hoophouse - Should I build one...is it what I'm looking for?

I live in the North Florida climate as well, and share your frustrations with being "in between" zones. A portable hoophouse will work wonders for you to ensure your potted plants survive the winter, provided it locks out the moisture and wind. The reason I suggest it be portable is because one year under the Florida Sun and your plastic will be yellowed, brittle and worthless. So some kind of structure that you can make based on your budget where you can take it down once things start warming up will save you a lot of expense of having to replace plastic every year. It's also far too hot in the summer, and anything inside would cook! A more permanent solution would be a greenhouse, but you'd need heavy shade cloth during summer and high ventilation. I have mine under deciduous trees, that way during winter there's plenty of light, and in summer it's shaded, which helps but I still need to use shade cloth to make even staying in there bearable, so it's really not use-able in summer. So there you have it - whether it's hoophouse or greenhouse will really be determined by your budget, but you'll get the results you want with either.

Is the first one the same one in the clump shot, or are they sibs? The clump shot is very impressive. I like the soft peach color of that one. The Texas Blue Eyes kid interests me. But my favorite one is the last one. A lavender bitone spatulate with a watermark! That's my kind of daylily. How old is that one, and how does the scape look?

Val, they are siblings. The first one has much longer petals that curl more. I like the 3rd one because it blooms so well. # 4 is a beautiful one, to me..nice and round and big!

ngraham, the first one is the one I have been waiting to bloom. it's rather late but sooo many buds. I will be posting more of it. The last one, to me is rather flat but I am hoping for a different form. I do like the color and love the pattern..

Debra, the first and the third are sibs. Not the same. I love the first one and it's the unbloomed one I posted yesterday with the buds and branches. The last one is a first year. It has had 3 blooms but they looked the same. Since it a new baby, I won't really know anything until next year! I think it still has a couple of buds left. I knocked a sepal of the Tx Blue eyed baby. She looks so much like her parent. I can't wait until next bloom!

The first two and the last one are my picks from this group. I love the pink color of the second one with the pale yellow watermark, and I'm a sucker for most big blooms.

I really like the last one. The pattern is great and I like the form also. To me, if it was curling, that would distract from the pattern. As it is, the petals, sepals and midrib all serve to accentuate the outward movement of the chevron pattern. I see this one as a case of less is more.

Hey, Ellie, I don't care for spiders but I know everyone's taste is different. That is the best thing about daylilies, there are so many different looks!

Wow, that purple eyed seedling you lost the label on is certainly a beauty. Good thing you had the patience to wait for it to bloom as it is soooooooooooo pretty. Guess you can tell that I really like it.

Julia, it looks so much like Tx Blues Eyes that it's uncanny. I think the petals are longer but I can't tell because of the recurve. Maybe next bloom..

me too Chris. I looked at the first again today. No fresh blooms but it will be blooming when the others are done. I recounted the buds and the branches. 5 way branching and 20 buds. 38" tall. I didn't measure the bloom yesterday but I will try to next bloom but I can say it's very large. Both the others you picked are also in the 6" range.

You may be right Christine. I don't want a roll, just a twist maybe. We'll see next bloom. I do like the eye pattern though.

linda, I will find the nametag of the last one when I dig in the tub. I didn't want to disturb anything just yet!

Yep Rita. Different strokes for different folks. I respect that. The eyed one you are talking about, nearly got tossed this year. A runt that didn't bloom...Hmm. Anyway, I am glad I kept it. We'll see what the next bloom brings. I broke a sepal off that one..
