Why do some daylily buds have this and others don't?

Condilla is a double and I have noticed that several of my doubles tend to have these long tendrils coming from their bud. I have no idea what that is called. Can someone explain this to me?

I don't know what it is either, but I have some that are not doubles doing the same thing.

I have some like that also and they are not doubles. Now that you mention it, I don't remember this in other years.

If your crops are abundant and healthy, I don't think you have a problem. I don't know why you don't have many earthworms, but I wouldn't worry about it too much if your soil is healthy. I don't want to disparage the Professionals, but they do scientific studies, you're just putting in a home garden and eating well. No one knows the soil in your garden better than you do, no matter how many studies he's done, or how many degrees he has. I never heard of worms who aerate the soil too much, and I doubt my mother or grandmother did either, yet all of us have managed somehow to feed our families over the generations without any cryptic and confusing analytical input from some guy with thick glasses and a bow tie. I have a couple of beds where I never see worms, and some where I have zillions of them. I guess only the worms know why they hang out in one area and not another. I do know they go where the food is, so I try to always include a lot of shredded leaves in my mulch as well as the compost. I'm not sure if worms are drawn to composted leaves like they are to uncomposted ones. So shredded leaves would draw more worms to the area. Cheryl

It was just 2 guys talking about the cost of grafting each plant and finding workers that could (and would) do it. *** Keith Zary said that the principal reason for the shift was the difficulty of finding people who could/would do the work for the low salary the companies could afford. This is very skilled, backbreaking stoop labor. EYE sure wouldn't do it 8 hours a day! I said, well, it would also go a way toward ending the constant cycle of RMV. Keith din't wanna discuss that. Of course, this was long before the sale of the company, when they were introducing "New Gen." I've HEARD that the people who bought J&P have a tissue culture operation. If true, I think that would indicate a shift in production methods? Ya know, the old Armstrong Roses Co. built the Somis, CA facility that J&P now uses. It's about 3 miles from here. It has a huge tissue culture facility, which is shuttered and dis-used. Armstrong basically went broke over it. The public, then, was not ready to accept small, own-root plants. But it WOULD go a long way toward ending the RMV cycle, so I'm all for it. Jeri

:o) Some thoughts before I join you in looking for those catalogs . . . 1. I'm probably one of the few that doesn't dab pollen (tried it once, couldn't get the seeds to germinate and figured I'd rather pay for someone else's trouble than wait three years to see a lousy creation of mine). 2. I agree, if I don't generally like the hybridizer's introductions. ;o) If I do, then they can intro as many as they want. 3. I'm in Michigan -- don't care about it. 4. I don't care for spiders, I DO like UFs, and it depends on the double. Once I saw in person a daylily with chicken fat edges, I decided I do like them after all. 5. I like this addiction. Talking about how good I've been NOT buying more expensive cultivars just makes me want them more. I'll stick with my present buying habits (lots of daylilies, but still haven't spent more than $75 for one). 6. Beautiful photos are terrific. But if someone loves daylilies enough to snap a terrible picture of one, and then posts it, I'm happy to look. I understand the need to share. 7. Couldn't agree more. 8. Ditto. 9. I'm in Michigan. What's rebloom? Just my opinions!

I bring them to work and give them to my co-workers. I do that with a lot of the extra divisions and seedling plants in the spring. This year I brought in 10 or so divisions of Siloam Doodlebug and 8 divisions of Snowy Eyes and a few of some others. I also bring in other plants, like Lady's mantle, iris, perennial geraniums and stuff. I hate composting perfectly good plants and I'm too lazy to sell them. Most of my co-workers are not die-hard gardeners like us and don't care about things like names and genetics - they're just happy to get a nice plant with neat flowers for free! I've been doing this for a few years and it's always fun to have people come back to me and rave over a plant I gave them a year or 2 ago.

I have some of them, too. And some not. Even in the same plant.
sometimes, if these happen along the middle of the scape, they develop into branching.

I've noticed this happening this year also. Not necessarily on doubles. I thought it was showing signs of branching also.

I have some on mine. --I would guess the ones closer to the species. I think they are extra leaves or bracts that encase the developing buds for protection from weather and pests. These outer leaves probably offer less nutrition in a harder to breakdown form than the buds, which would be particular attractive to insects and grazers.

I had this on many daylilies last year, but haven't seen it too much yet ... could be because scapes are just starting to emerge!

I think it is due to the unusual summer weather in spring. Almost all of my mid season bloomers have these this year I think because they emerged too early. My early bloomers don't have them. I'm wondering if the blooms will look like they are supposed to.
