Bud union planting depth?
Comments (4)I plant my bud union just below the surface, then the rose goes own root. Suckers tend to come from the ones that are not planted deep enough. What they told you at the valley nursery is absolutely positively true for every other type of plant at the nursery except roses and tomatoes. Those you can plant deeper without any problems. Most other plants would die of crown rot from the same treatment. Roses and tomatoes are the exceptions. I would bury the bud union just barely. I don't think I would plant quite as deep as people in real zone 5. Even at 6000 feet you are not going to have the brutal repeated freeze/thaw cycles that the midwest gets or serious below zero cold for weeks and weeks like Maine or Vermont. The roots of the plants will do better with more oxygen, and there is more oxygen towards the surface....See MoreTo bury or not to bury the bud union
Comments (11)Hi Kate, I'd keep them in pots for at least a few months before planting. You can baby them easier, and just in case you ended up with a mis-labeled plant, you will not have to dig it up. I do not know about your weather, but I thought I remembered a post where you mentioned that it was pretty cold. Burying the bud union will not adversely affect your plants, and will protect it if it does indeed drop down real low. Palatine are really amazing aren't they? Just potted mine up tonight after soaking for 5 days (mainly because it was just too cold to pot up). I got; Osiria Yorkshire Bank South Africa Paradise Lucille Ball The Paradise replaces a body bag that had RMV. I cremated her tonight. Lucille Ball was a surprise. I spoke to Rene about how he was able to sell it, and one ended up in my box. I have it already as an own root, but having it grafted on multiflora is just outstanding!...See MoreCan bud unions be planted too deep?
Comments (21)I planted my first order from Palatine and had the roots rot in deep clay while the upper areas survived. Part of this was multiflora in alkaline conditions. Now I put the long roots in a 15 gallon can and get no rot at all. The potting mix is very light and full of air. If I was going to plant long roots in the ground, I would place them on a slant or spread them out if I could do it without breaking them. I have put roses deeper down to encourage own rooting on the stems and if I dig them out again a year later to make several plants, I find that the roots from lowest areas have rotted away in the bottom of the hole....See MoreI just don't understand it....long
Comments (27)Dottie, I can't imagine the past year that you and your family has endured, and again hope that this year is brighter. But I CAN understand the frustration you're feeling. I too think she may well have begun a relationship and is either embarrassed to tell you or not sure how to. I see this type of thing so often and I just don't understand it! To completely cut off communication is a terrible thing to do to someone without at least saying a reason. If you're angry with a person, tell them. If you don't feel comfortable with them, tell them. If you don't trust them anymore or whatever the reason, at least don't leave them hanging. It's a very cruel thing to do. It's natural for you to be concerned. If you're close to her mother, I think I WOULD call just to see if she's all right. If you're close to her mother she may share some info with you or at least give you a reason if there is one other than our suspicion. I can imagine your fear for her well-being. I have a cousin out state who cut off all communication suddenly for a couple years or more. I never understood it and it bugged me. I knew there were some marital issues and with such an abrupt cut off altogether, I was to the point I had a PI friend do a little checking to see if she was alive. I had a real bad feeling that something bad happened. Finally she got a hold of me and apologized and explained that she and her husband had been having rough times both marital and financial (which so often goes together) and she was too ashamed to tell me about it. There's been other times too and like I said, why can't people just open up a bit and say something? If you do contact either, I would suggest you not raise the grave issue. If there is a new person, there could be an issue with even going to the grave. Some people are strange. I imagine your first concern is her health and safety. I'm guessing she's just confused. Good luck and hope you find out something soon. And here's to a much brighter year for all!...See Moredimitrig
