I alays seem to fell like "sweet Essence of Night shift" on Sundays after my nap. Just about 3 1/2 months left til retirement.

You sure do have the hot colors going on that last picture and I especially like Tiger River. The lily is really pretty too.

Philistine Champion looks like it is doing great for you! Salty Skipper is lovely as usual. But my favorite by far is Forsyth's Peek a Boo. What a beauty.

Thank you MayBee (and everyone else) Actually, I could use some landscaping advice Here is a picture a bit further back, which gives a better sense of the small little space I have. The garden "strip" (for lack of a better term) wraps around the side of my end-unit townhome. Most of this is in the shade (faces north), but the front edge is a small raised bed which gets sun all afternoon. Originally, it had three ugly old azealeas (sorry azealea lovers, I find them to be very boring bushes!!). So I was just going to replace them with three roses (Iceberg is what I was originally thinking). Well, that was 4 years ago...Let's just say I have "grown" as a garderner I wound up extending the raised bed a bit, it was about 10 feet long by 4 feet wide, now it is 15 feet long. But I cannot extend it any further. I have a lovely maple at the end of that bed, and I am already planting a bit too close to that tree as it is. Across the sidewalk from the raised bed is a small "island", which is community property...it has the fire hydrant and the light post. Because of Jude's popularity, I got the blessing of my neighbors to pull the ugly juniper ground cover and put in roses. I have 3 Lavagluts in there (one on lifesupport, after some bad transplant shock), and now have added 3 Souvenir de la Malmaison. I have ringed all 6 of the roses with dwarf lavendar, which should fill in nicely as the summer progresses. The full list of roses is as follows (16 in all): Jude the Obscure: In the corner closest to the steps. He is my first rose purchase, and first love - now 4 years old. It just keeps getting better Molineux (3 of them) They sit next to Jude. I planted them last year, they didn't do much last year, but this year I have gotten a good spring flush and they are starting to grow a bit. They have a nice tea fragrance Jardins de Bagatelle (2 of them, view obscured by red Lavaglut roses growing in the island): These are new this year. Not much yet, but pretty blooms on the baby plants with a nice fragrance. I wanted 3, to replace 3 Ducher (China) roses, which were perfectly fine rose bushes (bullet proof), but didn't really put out nice flowers for cutting. I have a small garden, I decided I wanted more cutting roses. I could only get 2 JdB this year (Roses Unlimited), so I am holding a spot for one more of these guys for next, assuming they perform well Crimson Bouquet (1, behind Molineux). It's 3 years old now. No fragrance, but lovely bloom, long lasting, great for cutting, and it repeats really well over the summer. Maggie (1, next to Crimson Bouquet on the pillar trellis). This is brand new (Antique Rose Emporium), just a baby, and not really visible. It replaced a hybrid tea (Beloved) that was constantly getting blackspot. I have high hopes for this one...already putting out new growth. Pickerings 4 Seasons Rose - in a pot, not in the picture (further up the steps). Doing ok, but not as nice a rose as Rose du Roi. Blooms are pretty, not a heavy bloomer, but it is still young. A very lanky plant though!! Rose du Roi (1, in a pot, next to Jude). I acquired as a happy accident last year, an apology gift from Rogue Valley Roses for sending me the wrong rose. I didn't have space, so he went in a pot. This rose is really growing on me. It produced a great, very fragrant flush last fall. That damask scent was just WONDERFUL!!!! This spring's flush has been very nice, and he is starting to fill in a bit. I may try and squeeze him in at the end of the garden later this summer, just past the space for Jardin des Bagatelles, roughly where the little white sign sits (I would have to fill in some dirt) I don't want to run a big "pot ghetto" Souvenir de la Malmaison (3 of these on the "island" next to the light pole, on the right) - What more can I say. They are brand new, and I am already very impressed. Patrick & Lori who live in my area, love this rose. I find the fragrance subtle, soft, not a strong as Jude or Rose du Roi, but nice. The flower form cannot be beat. They seem very happy in their new bed! Lavaglut (2 1/2, on the left side of the lightpole): They are only 1 year old, but are already 3 1/2 feet tall. They bloom non-stop all summer, and stand up INCREDIBLY well to the heat (and we have HOT, humid summers!!!). Blooms are long lasting (great cut flowers, but no fragrance), and a pretty deep red. Disease free foliage. I wrote off one of these (now a 1/2 rose, sitting, partially obscured by the fire hydrant) that I had transplanted (to make room for SDLM). But I looked last night, and it is showing signs of life (2 live canes, and a bunch of dead ones). I will look again at him tonight, and trim the dead canes. Should I keep him or pull him? If I pull him, I could conceivably buy & plant 2 more SDLM (on either side of the fire hydrant) and have 5 of those ringing the 2 remaining Lavagluts (and all framed by the new lavendar plants I put in). Or.... I could try and put in 2 of the SDLM sport, Capitaine Dyel de Graville (if I can find it!), to get a somewhat darker shade of pink. Oh the choices one has to make with a small garden!! You need to understand that hardiness concerns are different for bush roses such as hybrid teas as opposed to climbers. If bush roses are damaged all the way to the ground, they will still bloom in flushes through the season on new shoots from underground. If you plant with the graft or bud union (if any) below grade, they will do OK in midwestern zone 5b (not necessarily northeastern zone 5b). However, plants will stay small, maybe regrowing to 40" by fall. Do try Earth Song, it is more hardy, vigorous and disease resistant than any hybrid tea, and the flowers are similar, if slightly less glamorous. On the other hand, if climbers are severely damaged, the regrowth is mostly canes with few flowers. Climbers need to be cane-hardy every year in your climate, and most are NOT cane-hardy in zone 5b. Local advice would be good, or tell us where you live. Aloha, for example, has been cane hardy in southern Michigan. Alchymist should be good. Quadra and Ramblin' Red are often recommended for zone 5.

A few open a few ago, this are still baby roses that I got end of June. George Washington Richardson . The rose is thick and no wind is going to shatter this petals. It open yesterday . No scent Below is RJG, Let me see if I am going to mess up spelling. Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux or something like that. I can smell something but it is very faint. The last one is David Austin rose but I cannot remember the name. Okay, I got it. Lady Megginch. I love the color but I got sides track . I totally forgot to smell it . Gorgeous pictures! I can't pick a favorite from this group. I like all of them.
3 1/2 months to go til retirement--Yay! Some people don't think they'll be able to find enough to do when they retire. I sure wasn't one of them and somehow I don't think you will be either.

Normally I would have picked Salty Skipper, I really admire that one. Every one of these are great though, impossible to choose one over another, or even pick one I don't like as well.

Thank you all for looking and commenting on these. You know when you get close up of a bloom, it is difficult to tell how large the bloom is from the photo. Golly Galore is the largest bloom by far. I it at least 8 inches and usually larger. Then, sizewise, you have Primal Scream and Tiger River,as well as Philistine champion...all quite large blooms. Next would be You Glow girl. Cerulean Warbler, Salty Skipper the Mary's Baby. Because of the color and pattern, Forsyth's Peek a Boo packs a lot of punch, but it is a smaller bloom. I really am liking it, as I have discovered that I actually am extremely fond of smaller blooms that pack a wallop, but I think it is good to know relative sizes.

Rita, I had not expected it to bloom this year, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Val, you are so right! I am so ready to use my time at home instead of spending so much time either working or recovering from the work. (nights have become harder as I got older) that I'm ready to be off of them.

houstmag. As you can see, nothing escapes my keen nurse mind: you slipped right by me there. Sorry. One of each, huh. Thank you, I think they are a pretty group,and actually like everyone I posted today. I know how welcome the rain is, congratulations. We has a little shower again today, and it was so needed. What er need is a couple of days of steady rain...maybe a week of it.

Beautiful daylilies. Love the group shot too. They all look so colorful. I need to get busy taking some pictures and post them too. It has been so hot here in TX that it has been a slow bloom season and it is one one of the worst droughts on record for us here. The daylilies are not too happy with that. I have to water every day now.

My favorites here I think are Golly Galore and Celestial Warbler. That GG made me say, ooh, wow! May have to find both of those. Very nice, all of them.

Come on Dianne, post some pretties. I understand the heat and the drought. Unfortunately, we have shared both problems.

Karen, not only is Golly Galore a huge beautiful bloom, but there are an awful lot of the blooms. It is Shooter intro from Marietta Gardens. (A little better idea of size with zinnia)

Celestial Warbler is one of Luddy's introductions from Art Gallery Gardens, and they all seem to do really well here. Ada Mae Musick, another of Luddy's was planted in late fall last year, and has done well and it is pretty:

I love your clumps! My favorite blooms are Salty Skipper and You Glow Girl. Your plants are looking good, despite the heat and lack of rain. You must water them really well.

I just got the daylily crazies last year and am gradually learning which ones I like best. In this group CERULEAN WARBLER and SALTY SKIPPER really tug at my heart strings. They are painfully beautiful. Thanks for the beautiful photos.

Hooray for the upcoming retirement!

So many pretties! Can't choose between.... well I'm not going to list all of them. Just eliminate the oranges which I'm usually not very fond of, and all the rest are my favs.

I do have a question about Desperado Love. I had to look it up cuz I thought with "Love" in the name it might be the red one in that photo. It says it is yellow, but your photo is showing up on my monitor as a very very pale yellow, more of a yellowish cream than anything I'd call just "yellow". How does it actually look in person?

Debra, I am going to have to mortgage the house to pay the water bill :) Almost. We were blessed with little showers the last couple of days which means I don't have to water for a day or so. Happy! Happy! I do water, but really not enough.

Christine, Thank you, you have described exactly how I feel with a bloom that is usually going to come to live at my house. "tug at my heart". Debra, that is how I felt when I saw Salty Skipper on Juliets post last year. I do love that one. And Debra, you posted Cerulean Warbler and I had to have it. And I love it greatly...it's in my top 10 (which is really more like 25).

Casey It looks more like a cream than a yellow in my year. The monitor shows true color as it grows in my yard. It is a pretty one.

They are all so pretty! So my favorite will the be the group in the first picture and last with two oranges. Oh and You glow girl is a nice color!

You have so many gorgeous daylilies! I agree with you that nothing is prettier than Celestial Warbler. I also especially like the mix of colors in the first photo. I'm glad Salty Skipper is doing well for you!

Thank you, nat4b, I love hot colors. But I also love soft one. And I am always adding another one then figuring out where to put the next one.

Juliet, I love it as much as I thought I would when you posted pictures last year. You have no idea how grateful I am to you for putting me in touch with Mr. Bennett. His daylilies are something special. He sent me Joyful Lassie as a bonus and I really like it too. It has such clear colors, nothing muddy at all.
