I tried taking the picture with the white paper trick & isn't working for me. What am I doing wrong?

Here is Green Revolution & not anywhere near the color I see in my eye:

Ruby Border, but where's the border? Wanted it to be edge no eye deal:

Walking In Beauty is looking very skimpy on substance:

Anyone have Ruby Border to key me in on whether it is suppose to look like that?

I think I've seen Walking In Beauty here before, tell me it doesn't exhibit that frail veiny look forever.

Green Revolution - What time of day are you photographing? You will get the truest colors in the early morning before the sun is shining on the flower. Just before sunset is another good time to take shots of purples. When the sun is shining directly on purples it brings out the red tones.

RUBY BORDER may be a daylily whose edge-no-eye look is the result of fade out. (The hotter the temps, the more the daylily fades until only the area near the border has the darker color.) It may be too cool in Wisconsin to get the fade out. Here in Dixie we get fade out on those by 11 a.m.

WALKING IN BEAUTY - I have that one, and I don't recall it looking frail. In fact, it doesn't look frail to me in your photo. Is is newly planted? If so, it should improve. Mine isn't blooming yet. When it does, I'll post photos. If you are still having cool nights there, that may be part of the problem. This one likes heat.

The concept of using old spools for tables was popular in our college days too! (along with dinosaurs ..... just teasing! LOL!) And yes! A fun, funky way to have tables in a store display (maybe even stacked up for display?) or a fun patio ...add some fun colored umbrellas! Or maybe cleaned well, sanded and painted for a kids' play/craft area? But I would need different chairs -- and a cushion or two! LOL! I would really worry about splinters! Jan at Rosemary Cottage

Hi guys, Sorry for the delay in responding. We have been on the road making other appliance choices. I was thrilled to see so many helpful responses when I got home. Thank you all for your contributions! Here are a few general answers/reflections: 1)Good point about this fridge not being built in so it can be replaced if desired. 2)We have yet to see the fridge in person (we have to drive a hour away so it is a long distance love affair at this point). I will see how the plates match at that time and see how true to cobalt it is. 3)We had thought about painting the island blue, but I think I would prefer a less bright navy colour. We had also thought about a dark walnut colour as suggested above, but not sure how that would look with a blue fridge. I don't think I could go do either perimeter cabinets, nor island in a royal blue. 4)We will be limited in our ability to match other appliances. The only other appliance we could get in the blue would be the DW. They make a range, but we are doing an induction cooktop and separate oven. So if we did the blue fridge it would have to look good with all stainless appliances. 5)We don't want the fridge to be the major focal point of the kitchen, as we thought the glass cabinet would be. The decorative glass we are going for on the glass cabinet is a repeat of the decorative glass we have on the front door (Lexington glass from Trimlite). 6)I agree that others have asked about alternatives to stainless steel fridges on this forum and there are some great options besides the blue. I am having trouble finding any ratings on this fridge, so the fridge itself needs to function well as a fridge, not just look pretty. 7)You are right that I need to consider balance, and one bold coloured appliance may not work alone 8)We definitely want a stained island colour as mentioned to limit dirt as we have a family. I will get my light painted cabinet fix with the perimeter cabinets. 9)The plates could go in my dining room if they look bad with the fridge. I have another collection of Hummel plates that could go on the kitchen plate shelf (the Hummels are creams, brown colours). 10)Thanks to all who posted on how to tie in the blue colourwise. This is an area that I need help with for sure. You have given me lots to think about. What shade of cream would look okay with the blue? Thank you all again for your time and thoughts. Unless you're planning on puncturing your marble counters with fork tines and/or dancing on them you'll be OK :) Your counters are going to be sealed (and you should reseal them every year or so as a precautionary measure). You will more than likely not get stains if you seal. You WILL get etches!!! I yell this at you because the mere sight of a lemon or a glass of wine or a tomato makes marble etch. It will pit and/or scratch in places where you drag countertop items. Not a very noticeable scratch like those that can happen on soapstone, but a surface scratch or pit. Oh, and it will be beautiful despite these things! Do you wear jeans? Or do you wear dry clean only silk pencil-pants? If you wear pencil pants, stay away from marble. If you wear jeans here is my advice: Keep it clean, keep it sealed, don't poke it with forks or dance on it, and don't let acidic things sit on it for long and you'll be fine. needinfo1 had a great point about Europe and marble. It's true, they have had counters made of marble for centuries and they look gorgeous. I stayed in a villa in Italy that was 400 years old. The counters in the kitchen area were at least 100 years old. They are what solidified my decision to get marble in our last house. My last house had soapstone and marble counters. My soon-to-be-finished kitchen is getting...guess what? Marble and soapstone counters! I don't plan on dancing on them, but I may dance NEXT to them :D Good luck with your choice!

I am very excited. HOWEVER, there is one fissure that I'm trying to decide if I'm going to let bother me or not. I know granite is a natural stone, blah blah, and I was under no illusion that it would be perfect, but this one fissure is a bit longer than I remember seeing when I picked the slabs out (EONS ago) - maybe I didn't see it...those slabs are huge and I bought three of them. I'm 5'1", so I probably didn't even see every inch. In any event, the light hits it just so at night and you can see it. I wish they'd put it in a less obvious place. It's not deep enough for the granite guys to "fix" - I asked - but it is there. I want to "get that loving feeling" back and stop nitpicking every little thing, you know? I don't want to be obsessed with every detail because that will drive me insane. It's kind of that new car scenario - do I become so crazed that I let the little things bother me, park miles from the stores and starve my kids rather than let them have a snack in the car, or do I embrace it as fabulously utilitarian and freaking USE it? Talk me down. It's "just" a freaking fissure right? Verde Butterfly is KNOWN for them, right? It's beautiful and that is just one more way it's beautiful???? RIGHT??? LOL. Hmmm... I guess I didn't out-Murphy Murphy's law after all. DRAT! :)

I have Walking in Beauty also and have found it to be a terrific daylily...I always plan to cross with it, as I'd love to have more daylilies like it in a range of colors (it's pretty pale here).

It's a sturdy daylily...is it blooming early for you? I ask because it has not begun to bloom for me yet (although I did move it...)...

Definitely give it more time, especially if it is new...

So the sun still makes a difference. I took the pic in overcast conditions & thought that was enough to make it work, apparently not. So the crack of dawn & right before the sunsets is the best. Purple dls are weird. I can take pics of my other plants in those conditions w/o the white paper & have them come true. No wonder people are all messed up about purples. It truly is a beautiful color & just wish I could get a good pic of it. It is just settling in here & yes, all of these are new this spring. I got them off the LA last fall from the best seller I have run across to date. Dbl the fans, came with scapes, great bonus! I will buy from him over & over! This is the 3rd or 4th bloom now & know it will get better. I am so excited about that green edge!

Ruby Border is interesting. So they all take heat to get like that, huh? Even the other varieties such as Beautiful Edgings, Alicia Rose Kissed, Seal of Approval etc.? I don't have those but I do have Crimson Edgings & Pacific Coast & wonder if they will be the same? I guess I can see how RB would have a tendency to be like that. We'll see what happens when it gets warmer here.

Walking In Beauty has the veiny look where those wrinkles are. Is that normal? I have Lime Frost that exhibits that & can't stand it because of it. I really like the rubbery looking dls aka heavy substance. So yours doesn't show that on a regular basis?

lala: ummmm, your not suppose to not leave the white paper on the ground behind the bloom. You have to put the white paper next to the bloom, focus and then slowly pull the white paper away and click down on the shutter button.
Are you using a point and shoot camera or just a regular one (sorry don't know how to define a non point and shoot camera).

I get the best color on my purples between 6:30 and 7 a.m., or after 6:30 p.m. You can also use an umbrella to shade them when you photograph.

Many, but not all edge-no-eye daylilies, are fadeouts. Stamile says on his website that Crimson Edgings is not. I don't have the ones you mentioned, so I can't tell you. I only have the older ones. I would say Desiree's Desire is a fadeout, and At First Blush is not.

Walking In Beauty does not have heavy substance. But the petals aren't paper thin like Lime Frost. Mine had different looks last year throughout the growing season. Early on it had a tendency to have puckered petals. It is probably my least favorite of the 9 Stamile pinks I have.

Julia Thank you for explaining that. I tried to take pictures today and gave up cause I couldn't get the color right. I was holding the paper off to the side out of the shot. I thought it had something to do with light reflecting off the paper. Didn't think that it was so my camera could make auto adjustments. Makes perfect sense now. I feel kinda stupid now that you explained it so clearly.

Sorry all, I just reread my message and should have said:

I think I may need to take grammar classes. Been with the plants too long.....

Andrea: Hope it works for you and yes, the camera is auto adjusting. Can't tell you how many times I accidentally clicked all the way down on the shutter button when I still had the white paper next to the bloom. LOL.

Holy toledo! That looks like 2 different dls altogether! If I can get the 2nd look consistently it's a keeper.

Julia, I tried putting that white paper next to it too, & it still didn't work. I'm going to try the umbrella trick next time. Looks like I will have another bloom tomorrow to try it on. When the photo tip thread was going on, it mentioned a white umbrella & I only have a blue & white, not sure if that will make a difference.

It is finally starting to warm up here & I have many more blooms coming from RB & can't wait to see. I'll keep you posted.
