Granite installed today!!!

Well, my granite is being installed AS WE SPEAK. Exciting! It looks beautiful, though it is the wrong edge. I toyed with sending it back for them to fix it, but decided not to. My GC kept saying over and over, "we want you to be HAPPY! DO NOT SETTLE!" I'm glad he was watching my back and not encouraging me to just accept it. Even the granite guys were totally pleasant about it, which was nice.

The edge is an ogee which is originally what I wanted (and asked for). Then, when I went to the shop I saw the verde butterfly in an ogee edge on an example piece and wasn't pleased with the laminate edge so I asked for an ogee bullnose where the bullnose sticks out beyond the end of the ogee (so it would be an obvious demarcation for the lamination and not look like it was trying to be hidden).

Well, it came as just an ogee - the bottom is a radius edge, so I guess it's KIND OF bullnoss-like, but they didn't do the bump out (what is the technical name for that kind of edge?). You can see the laminate line if you look, but it's not horribly obvious - in fact at first I didn't notice it at all. I didn't even realize it was the wrong edge at first! I just noticed how great it looked...and then I thought, "Hmm, that's not QUITE what I expected it to look like..."

They offered to take it back to the shop and fix it, but then I found out that the edge I'd asked for actually is a 2 1/4 inch edge and the subtop would have to be built up to accommodate it and then, once installed, there would be little issues (like my appliance garage would no longer fit under the uppers and I can't move the uppers up because then the crown won't fit properly, etc). A snowball effect. And this IS the edge I originally asked for, so in that respect I am happy. The other edge would have attracted crumbs I'm sure! LOL.

I am actually very, very happy with the way it is looking at the moment (it's not all in and the seams aren't done, so let me reserve judgement and KNOCK ON WOOD - and HOPE that the only issue will be the wrong edge detail!). It's Verde Butterfly, btw.

Here's a progress picture...more to follow once done! Note the temporary legs - I can't wait for the real ones to arrive!!!

Well, with all that snowballing it looks like it wasn't so much that they gave you the wrong edge as the fairies were watching out for you and pushed aside the change order!

It's gorgeous! And what a great GC!

Thank you for the posts and the sweet comments and encouragement. I did go back to the granite place after making an appointment and the same girl seemed totally clueless even though I have e-mailed with her about this whole thing time and again answering her questions sending info. She seemed not to remember anything about our situation or that we had an appointment. After trying to explain and not getting a response I finally asked her in a nice way "do you not understand what I am explaining?" I think she does she just doesn't want to be bothered it appears. So to make a long story short so as not to bore you things are in a holding pattern for now. I hired a decorator to come out and look at it all and she agreed it looks awful (in person) mostly due to the sink cutouts being too small and how the faucet holes are drilled too close to the sink so that the faucets extend way out past the drain. I will have to send those back I guess if I can't get this worked out. I guess I could learn to live with the square sinks and the purple dots and the veins going in the wrong direction but with the other problems too I would rather not. Not to mention, it doesn't look like granite with no veining or flowing lines it looks like something else not sure what but not granite. It was a disappointment, shrug... The sinks are from their supply so they had them on site when cutting the holes. To someone who asked ~I'm so sorry they don't have an ID on them as to who the manufacturer is. They are supposed to have a chrome cover for the overflow hole which after going round and round with them I finally got them. The installer had them in his pocket. Sheesh!!! They look nice on the overflow hole at the back of the sink. I will be sure and post new pictures if and when it ever gets resolved!! Thank you all so much again for all of your help.

WOW! Thanks to all for the wonderful comments. I'm pleased with my choice, or should I say my DH's choice, which is why I was a bit concerned if everything would blend. I agree once all the finishing touches are complete, most importantly the backsplash, I will be so happy. vampiressm - I wasn't sure about the green either, but made my choice early on, so I stuck with it there really weren't any other colors I really loved. Anyway, i could always change the paint color down the road. beekeeperswife - you're funny! I'm not sure the 700 lbs of granite will be going anywhere. Its starting to grow on me. I'm loving it! debrak2008 - I'm thrilled that you saved my kitchen as an inspiration! Makes me feel real good about my design and choices. and to those who noticed my Roxy girl - she's a sweet dog! She's been a trooper living through our kitchen demo. I'm sure she'll be excitred to have a new eating area. Anyone with backsplash ideas, please keep them coming. I have no idea what to do.

NewSouthernBelle, The Typhoon/Sienna Bordeaux was pretty much it for us. We looked at A LOT of granite, trying to keep an open mind, in case there was something better. The first time we went to the stoneyard, we made a list of slabs we liked, as we saw them. At the end, I looked at the list and found we had listed three different lots of Typhoon/Sienna Bordeaux (they were not near each other in the stoneyard -- very spread out). We both agreed that we liked the granites with more movement & not much in the way of speckles. When we went back later to make our final decision, I was still looking to see if there was something else I liked better. There wasn't. I don't think my particular slabs would go well with white cabinets, but they would be OK with creamy ones. The "white" areas are more cream & beige-y tones. Not much true white in it. For something with browns & blacks but white background to go with white cabinets, check out what brianadarnell chose: Alaska White (link at the end.) She also considered Delicatus White. Bear in mind that there are many different variations in a stone of any name, so some Typhoon Bordeaux slabs might have a more white background than ours did. We pretty much knew what cabinet shade we wanted & took a cabinet sample with us. I felt that we wanted something in lighter tones to go with the mid-range reddish stain of the cabinets. We found some granites that we liked just did not go well with the cabinet color (too yellow, too gray, too pinky, too whatever). Don't try to choose your granite from online pix or from the tiny samples at a store. There is such a huge range of granites out there, I strongly recommend you take a field trip -- or two -- to choose your granite. Best if you take samples of your cabinet color & flooring with you. socalthreems, Every stone job has to have some issue. There is no argument about it - it is a law of nature. It is, in fact, the little known secular definition for the third law of thermodynamics. So guess what: you've had your "issue", found that in some way the problem has worked out to your advantage and the rest will be smooth sailing. You've out-Murphy'd Murphy!

Very exciting. My granite just went in last week, but one last piece didn't go in until today because the stove wasn't here. They have to do some last minute cuts tomorrow morning and then seal it. I so hope I have a functional kitchen by Christmas even if it isn't totally finished.

Here is the final product! YEA! I forgot to ask them about sealing though...I'm going to take more pictures when the guys are gone and the surfaces are all clean. It is the look I was going for, and I'm glad I made the switch from Giallo Ornamental - while beautiful, it wasn't the "feel" I wanted, which was more soapstone/absolute black. I think I might have done soapstone if my kids were a tad older. I like character, but my 3 yo still plays the drums on the table with her utensils on occasion, and that would drive me over the edge!

The double ovens are in and working - so at least I can heat things up for Christmas!!! LOL.

The granite looks great! Also, what is your wall color? It looks more green in your first picture and more blue in the second. Our kitchen has a similar layout with the tall ceilings (although our island isn't as nice as yours, and I wish I had double ovens around the holidays) and have been stumped as to color. Yours looks great!

Thank you! The wall color is BM Van Courtland Blue and it is a very gray blue. The granite has a green/blue/gray tone to it, so that might be pulling a bit of green into the wall color. Or it could just be the light.

We've owned the house since 2003, but it was built in 1949. In our area, alot of people would demo the house and rebuild some large McMansion, but I like the character of the older homes, and to me it seems more beachy/casual - more Southern Californian than alot of the Spanish/Mediterranean houses that are here. Not that I don't love that style, there are just so many of them. And so many cute beach cottages are going by the wayside, which I find unfortunate.

I have a friend who just bought a house and I think half my house could fit in her bedroom. LOL.

The plan is to have white subway tile backsplash with a detail over the range (white and a very, very pale yellow basketweave pattern - you can almost not see the yellow). Cross your fingers it all looks okay once it's in. I have a hard time trusting my vision will be realized, but so far, so good. :)

The kitchen SHOULD be done by the end of the first week of January, maybe the 2nd, and I will post pictures for all of you to critique!

The wall is the perfect compliment for your granite, which is fabulous! I love the edge...and it will be the best drum your 3 year old every had! heh heh

Lovely! I love the blue and the white, and the granite looks very pretty. Verde Butterfly is one of my favorites.

I am very excited. HOWEVER, there is one fissure that I'm trying to decide if I'm going to let bother me or not. I know granite is a natural stone, blah blah, and I was under no illusion that it would be perfect, but this one fissure is a bit longer than I remember seeing when I picked the slabs out (EONS ago) - maybe I didn't see it...those slabs are huge and I bought three of them. I'm 5'1", so I probably didn't even see every inch.

In any event, the light hits it just so at night and you can see it. I wish they'd put it in a less obvious place. It's not deep enough for the granite guys to "fix" - I asked - but it is there.

I want to "get that loving feeling" back and stop nitpicking every little thing, you know? I don't want to be obsessed with every detail because that will drive me insane. It's kind of that new car scenario - do I become so crazed that I let the little things bother me, park miles from the stores and starve my kids rather than let them have a snack in the car, or do I embrace it as fabulously utilitarian and freaking USE it?

Talk me down. It's "just" a freaking fissure right? Verde Butterfly is KNOWN for them, right? It's beautiful and that is just one more way it's beautiful???? RIGHT??? LOL.

Hmmm... I guess I didn't out-Murphy Murphy's law after all. DRAT! :)
