Lily Nook on TV

I just finished watching Recreating Eden on The Knowledge Channel. It was about The Lily King, the small prairie town of Neepawa, Manitoba is now claimed to be the World Lily Capital thanks to the work and passion of Barrie Strohman.

Oh man, I couldn't believe how many lilies that he has growing in his fields, it must be so beautiful to see in person! I can't wait till summer now!

Oh rats! That would have been a great show to see. I'll have to try and see if I can catch a re-run of it later in the season. But, having been there in person, it really is a sight to see!

See Sharon, now you'll really have to make a trip to Manitoba......July is one of our best flower months.;0)

It was just by coincidence that I was playing Scrabble on the computer and lo and behold I heard "lilies" on the TV and ran up to see what's on. I hardly ever watch that particular channel, let alone tv and here it was featuring The Lily Nook.
It was such a good program, they also showed the Lily festival that you guys have each year too. Unbelievable!

Barrie is such an amazing plantsman and so healthy and mighty for his age! His family must be so proud of him. The had a scene there where Barrie is up in the wee early morning and the sun was just coming up and you see him in the mist of all his lilies, it was just breathtaking to see.

I know Laurie, I would love to visit there someday, I would also like to take a trip (just 2 hours away) and visit Valley K as well. Too much to do, so little time. LOL

If you know where the shelf is that you want the cable box and DVD player, then a conduit is a good idea (hole to pull wires through). The electrical boxs and jacks add up in cost and are not necessary - it does make for a cleaner install however. The problem with the prewired is that technology changes and the variety of tv connectors is crazy. First we used coaxial cable, then composite video, moved onto S-video, upgraded to component and then the SVGA morphed into HDMI. That is about 10 years and 6 different cable types. I will say that there is only incremental improvement from component to HDMI but if you are doing 1080i from bluray - you probably want HDMI. Now - we are probably done with cable changes for a while but try pricing out a HDMI connector - I can tell you that I don't think Lowes carries it. Also - last I heard (1 year ago?) was that HBO and others will not let HDTV signal out of a cable box to HDMI secondary to piracy concerns. So you might have HDMI from bluray and component from your cable box. Don't care about all this fancy HDTV stuff - well someone in your household might in the next few years and a buyer someday might. Take home points - you can't(code rules) run the power cord for the TV in a "hole" - so put in an outlet. The slickest look is cable box and dvd player in a cabinet/closet so plan for a IR repeating system (to get the remote signal into a closed area).

Wow, you guys are terrific! Thank you all so much for taking the time to answer! I love the idea of the built in. That might be the best/cheapest solution for now. I'm posting a few shots from the back of the room so you can get a better idea of the entire space. I didn't prep the room, so it looks a bit cattywampus. It used to have a pool table in it and the man person that lives here thought the tv on the high shelf would be better for viewing while playing pool. Probably would have been if anyone ever played pool in there. So glad to see that thing go, but boy do I miss my laundry folding table. ;) After the kitchen is done (next week=yay!) I'm going to begin on this room starting with that corner area, some kind of window treatment for the sliders, new lighting (PO put ceiling fans in there 8( ) and paint for the entire great room. So, should I keep the depth? You'll notice that the shape of the space is squared off then moves into a triangle. Arcy, I'd still really love a gas fireplace in there. Not only for ambiance but warmth too. My only option would be propane however. Not out of the question some time in the future.

Thanks for the great ideas everyone! The wainscoting with camouflaged doors is really clever. Yes, my original plan was to drywall it in and put a low credenza or console table with art or photos on the wall. The front door is on the other side of the arch and I really wanted to create a small closet with access from the arch. We only have one very small closet for the entire main floor and it’s not convenient for coats and shoes when you enter the house. The first contractor thought that might disrupt the arch, but I think I’ll get another opinion because it’s not a load bearing wall. Thanks for the great ideas!

TV/linear fireplace wall design

Are you planning a wood burning or gas fireplace? If wood burning this one seems like a great option for linear without being too modern - we looked at it but concluded we needed more height (and we're not dealing with the constraint of a t.v. over the fireplace, as we're generally not a fan of that, aesthetically or functionally). http://www.heatilator.com/Products/Longmire-Wood-Fireplace.aspx That said, I would really consider an arrangement as in your first photo, with the t.v. next to the fireplace.

Barrie is definitely amazing! We had him as a speaker for the garden club, and he's wonderful as a speaker too. He's very friendly, and boy does he know his lily stuff!

Hi folks,
I posted this a few days ago but not sure where it went. My apolgies if it shows up again.
I caught the rerun of the Lily King episode of Recreating Eden last week and very much enjoyed seeing it again. The whole Strohman is fabulous for taking Barrie's 'retirment hobby" and making such a great business out of it.
I just finished proofreadingthe Lily Nook's 2008 catalogue and am sorry to say my pockt book is going to be significantly lighter once it comes out. There are some really nice lovelies in this year's edition. It should arrive in January sometime.

Since I'm from Wpg, every year we go back and visit and I always try to be there in July and on the way back, we always drive straight to the display gardens and it's like eye candy! Awesome! Then we spend seveal hours walking through the gardens making a list of our favorites and then back to the Lilynook and the buying begins. I hardly ever leave without spending at least $100.00 and usually much more and last year was $148.00. That's a lot of $6.00 lilies. Some of the lilies like Original Love (LA) and First Crown and Fuego Crown (OA)were absolutley beautiful.
